Lol yeah I was like “why don’t you just go into diving and get your athletics credit for school since you’re a gymnast and they’re basically the same thing” to my gymnast friend. I take that back now😂
As a gymnast I can confirm that this is true and when I went diving for the first time I hit my head and ended up in stitches. If you are a gymnast I do not recommend going diving unless you are great at not landing in the same spot
That's one of a few reasons why you dive with your heels off the back, you're positioning yourself so you can do the dive as close to landing in the same spot (because it looks cleaner and you want your momentum to take you up and not out, same as in gymnastics i suspect) as possible so it's safer and better looking. You can't get power off your heels anyway.
well advanced training should include landing wherever you want. front, back, even side. This makes your salto more stable and you can correct yourself easier on bad days
I'm a gymnast too and I did diving for a while, it was sooo hard to get over the reflex of "never land on your head". i can land on my back or front (like tramp) but I can't land completely headfirst. so when I'd do a 1.5 front flip I kept either landing on my back on the water or on my front, and in back dives I always over rotated and landed feetfirst in a back pike or a whip type flip I was pretty good at the flips though so that was a plus
@@icarusbinns3156 I also kept almost hitting/landing on the board bc in gymnastics you're supposed to take off and land in (roughly) the same spot when you do a back flip,, traveling more up than back bc that's what gymnasts do, I never actually hit the board though luckily. my hair did graze it several times though, once at a meet and my coaches flipped out
As a former diver, we often warm up and practice on trampolines, mats and foam pits this set up was made for the divers not the gymnasts, you can’t tell because the board is fastened to the concrete floor into a mat and not a pool. We use the dry land training areas because messing up isn’t as painful in a foam pit or mat than it is on water. (Unless you land head first so we land on our backs hence why the mats are higher than where water level would be) as landing on your back, side or chest/belly after generating momentum stings horribly and leaves you completely red.
I’m a gymnast and started diving recently and when I’m learning new diving skills it feel so different! Being a gymnast definitely helps a little bit for me ❤
Stick with it man. It will pay off and the success will make you happy and bring more meaning into your life. Its all a grind, you can overcome anything to achieve greatness-- Ian proves that! 🙏
The fluidity of the flipping is so sikilar to what I was taught when I learned trampoline and tumbling. You can tell Ian was focused on the distance because he wasn't really hitting that rise before flipping.
when I started diving after being a gymnast for years, trusting the board is insanely hard. You think you need to go out way more than you actually do bc the board does push you out more. Hitting the board was like fear #1 and you can def see that bc all of his dives land SO far out 😂
Y’all remember this song on that one dancing app we used in elementary? Yeah I learned this entire dance so well I could do it with my eyes closed & without hearing the music. It was a great time.
I love it when acrobats and gymnasts do my sport❤ you did WAY better then some gymnasts I've seen. Also, pro tip for reverse flips (gainers) , you're wanting to take off and lead with your feet. DONT lean back, because you can REALLY hurt yourself if you do
i tried diving in hs and HOLY SHIT it is terrifying. I slipped on the board just trying to get height and my entire left leg from my ankle to my knee was scraped up bad, i also smacked trying to do a front summersault. anxiety and diving are not a good combo lol. i never attempted a back dive alone, only the ones where my coach would be on the board and lean me back. I can still a back and front approach tho, buts thats its lmao
I was a gymnast as a child for like… idk… five years? We are over a decade past that. I was also. A swimmer. For about a decade. Different than a diver, but there is a little bit of overlap and I did get to do some dives The absolute terror In my SOUL At the concept Of being a gymnast who is taught to land in the spot that you jump And attempting diving where doing that means you will get *scalped* by the board (it has happened) Gave me anxious sweats
I was a Diver in college. Most of the team were also gymnasts. There is a lot of cross over between the two sports. I was the only diver who was a speed swimmer.
I always thought that if you're a gymnast cliff diving would be a walk in the park and you can go to a trampoline park and it'd be easy asf. More scary with height man
Honsstly, im with him, why IS that just exposed concrete there? And here i thought fucking up your trick, embarrassment was the only thing that would kill you. These people out here tryin to change that!
why tf IS there a giant concrete death pit??? I remember when I did gymnastics (5-13) We also had a giant concrete pit that begged for my soul and I NEVER knew why😭
I remember trying this myself, you have no idea how discombobulating the switch between landing on your feet and landing on your head is. Rule one of not dying in gymnastics is not landing on your head. Unless you enjoy 1 & 3/4 rollouts which is still very different to landing purposefully landing on your head.
This shows gymnastics and diving are very VERY different sports
ikr almost got the two mixed up 😢
i couldnt tell the difference at first 😮
I do both
Lol yeah I was like “why don’t you just go into diving and get your athletics credit for school since you’re a gymnast and they’re basically the same thing” to my gymnast friend. I take that back now😂
Excellent point. Lots of sports involve flipping.

Yes because gymnastics is different then that
and if you land badly, water is practically concrete...

If you're not directly behind the horse you should be fine

Don't break the diving board, Ian, or it's the concrete death pit for you!

In gymnastics we are taught to take off and land (especially on back tucks) in the same spot
Great for the floor
Not so great for diving 😂

I’ve never seen a diving practice pit before, it looks fascinating and terrifying at the same time
Well actually divers just jump in the water. This set up was specifically for the gymnasts to get their moves before hitting the water

Same💖
I’m curious, what were the biggest adjustments transitioning between the two? I did gymnastics, did not do diving.
@@kbee8517 I switched young enough that I had time to hammer mechanics. A big difference is riding the board and jumping up instead of out

My buddy is a springboard diver. He tried gymnastics once but he didn't dare continue because it's so reflexive for him to land on his head.

Honestly, I’m really loving having national-level athletes in my feed. Cheers, Ian!
Music giving me nostalgic 2010 vibes 😢 and I love it
This is great. My spouse was a diver & I was a gymnast, and sometimes we try to teach each other things.
A gainer!! That’s what parkour athletes call a hospital flip when they do it off a concrete ledge.
Go Ian!! Good for you!
'yea thats like the whole sport' hahahaha that got me
I didn't know divers practiced like this! Brilliant!
That last jump into the pool was genuinely funny
Seeing her dive in the start really scared me.
WAIT, this music was on when I did gymnastics as a kid! New core memory unlocked
Oh my gosh, I’m literally dancing to this song in my hip hop dance class!!
PLEASE collaborate with Molly Carlson the Canada Olympic Diver. PLEASE

y did i always think that divers practice by walkin all the way up the board and jumping and then repeating that over and over 😭
“ you’re not small enough to fit in that crack” Ian: “ what you tryna say 😑”
I love this. As a diver in high school, which was years before the dinosaurs LOL we had to take gymnastics as supplement thanks for both perspectives
legend says Ian is still traumatised by the concrete death pit today
I’m a fellow diver and I can agree that it’s very difficult and different to gymnastics
Ian is so adorable 🥺
