- The Whaling stations on South Georgia Island are rich with history and heritage. In 1916, Sir Earnest Shackleton reached Stromness Station to find rescue for his shipwrecked crew after his disastrous Antarctic expedition where his ship Endurance sunk in the ice of the Weddell Sea.
The stations have long been abandoned. The buildings are degrading and falling down. Elephant and Fur Seals have reclaimed the beaches and buildings.
The South Georgia Heritage Trust sent a survey team of experts to assess what could be done to preserve some of the historically important buildings and to removes pollutants and hazards from the sites.
Special thanks to The South Georgia Heritage Trust, Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Quixote Expeditions and RSK Falklands. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Thank you for documenting this important aspect of maintaining the structures on South Georgia. My father was there in 1951, when whaling was active. I am going this November, and envy you the access with a drone, which really shows the extent of the structures. I have looked into it, but it seems that I cannot use a drone although I am a professional videograapher, unless engaged in a project like yours.
Have an amazing trip! We had to apply for special permits with the Government which came with flying restrictions.
With all the money in this world how can we not secure a few million to completely renovate this? These stations are a massive part of our history…..Whalers defined an entire era , leaving its mark on every history book created. The fact these stations still exist should be enough reason to restore them.
Places like this fascinate me.
Me too!
Absolutely stunning footage and fascinating to see what it's been done for restoration. Thanks for putting this content out there.
Thank you!
Perhaps the most clean air in the earth
AMAZING!!!
Fascinating. A significant part of history
Some great drone shots
Awesome video thank you
Really interesting stuff!
Any secondhand Anvils for sale from there ??? 👍

I hope for the love of God our past teaches us from our mistakes, we basically knocked every living creature on these islands down to the last 1% of their species dying off completely and only because there wasn't enough profit to be made we packed up and abandoned the island and in only 40 years it's rebuilt to become the most heavily populated place on the world for natural wildlife. Im just worried that when my kid hits thirty if he's lucky he might get to experience hopefully 50% of the current wildlife on these islands. It's only a matter of time before greed corrupts and deep pockets prioritize themselves before others.
I hope to sail to Antarctica in coming years, I I’d love to stop by this piece of history when it’s fully restored!( obviously not the whaling part)
Can you sit on the beach with the wildlife? I did in the Galapagos. Also, can you swim in the sea?
You can in some places. The Fur seals are very territorial and do lunge at you if you get too close but if you keep a distane of a few meters they dont seem to mind you.
With caution. The seals have been known to attack humans
Too cold for swimming.
You can swim with female seals. The big male seals could dangerous. I have interacted with seals with close contact down the east cost of Australia from Thursday Island all the way to Wilson's Promontory thence north to Kangaroo Island and up the Spencer Gulf, but I never trusted the big male seals in the water. Subscribed. Bloke from Aus.
@@tonylawrence9157 Far too cold for me! Was -2 degrees celsius with the icebergs!
It would be better for the wildlife if all of the crumbling whale station was removed. A few new buildings could be put up, such as a gym and community centre for islanders.
Maybe a Starbucks...
What islanders? There is only a research station across the bay. There is NO permanent population.
What islanders? Do you mean the animals? Gym of all things?
Las islas Malvinas, Georgias y Sándwich del sur son argentinas.
Was there in the 80s the big whale ramp was still there but planks missing. It was in not to bad a state must be the cold. The tanks where kind of goosed with rust. History is hard hunting whales is banned at the moment but different times. Was it right or wrong we do not have the right to judge by modern standers.
What a bunch of fools, scrap it all as recycling to get it cleaned up and give it back to the wild life
idiotic take
Obviously you did not listen to what was being said in the documentary.
Should be demolished and the debris removed and restore the island for the wildlife
You do realise there are several other former whaling stations there don't you, not just this one?
Yes, but it would be a big and costly clean up. We destroy and polute, never clean up, never reinstate.
a waste of a lot of money in my opinion. tear it all down and replace it with a unique hotel.
That hotel might have some staffing issues :/
Why restore this shameful thing?
Because its part of history?
History, perhaps especially the horrifying parts shouldn't be forgotten
@@dawnmoriarty9347 True. You're right.
