Great footage!!! Glad to see some other people in the world are as fascinated by the South Atlantic as I am
My father was there in his twentys he passed away last year at the age of ninty six he was a riviter and built the original whale oil tanks he sailed out of Grange mouth in Scotland signed on for twenty four months
Now especially after the 7.6 earthquake today!
It doesn't get as much love as the South Pacific, but there's a beauty there all its own, perhaps it better left that way

My last visit to the beautiful Island was in 2007 it's doubtful I'll ever visit again I'm only thankful that I did make down to the South Atlantic.
Thank you for this. We were there with the Expedition last year and a couple from our ship got married in the Whalers Chapel (#16 in its chapel records), it was so special. Wonderful to see a different perspective! All good things!
I actually had the thought prior to reading your comment that was “I wonder if any couple has been married in that chapel.” Thanks for the confirmation, it truly is a wonderful world.
This is one of the comments that makes the internet truly fascinating. That's really cool.
WHAT A COOL PLACE TO GET MARRIED!
I looked around in this place in Google Earth and its Wonderful
Shackleton brought me here, Amazing Video indeed. Thank you!
A lot has changed since I first visited Grytviken in 1983, the whaling station was intact and all the surrounding buildings too. The flensing deck was still there with all the winches. The old DC hydro electric power plant is now a ruin, and Shackleton House a totally gone. Which is a shame.
I have been there. Went in 1992 on a nuclear submarine to drop off supplies and generator parts to some special forces types. I was a technician at the time and fixed their generator. An amazing place.
submarines do not do logistics work and it would've been far much easier to have a research vessel to deliver cargo. That's excluding the question on why military and a nuclear submarine would even be down there in the first place.
@@Schonah Why wouldn't a Nuclear sub not be in the South Atlantic?
What can I say? Spectacular photography. Great work. Very informative. Thank you, thank you again.
Thank you. I lived In Grytviken for 4 months in the early 90s. 30 yrs later so much has changed but the landscape still remains the same, minus a few buildings here and there. So many memories of that wonderful place. Done a wonderful job of resoring the buildings and the church, looks so white and red now, lol. Was not the case back in the day. They were just starting to restore the Whaling museum. So much has changed. Great to see my playground again :)
Do the island residents attend the church for worship?

It's endlessly fascinating isn't it. Not to mention starkly beautiful.
@@mrb7094 absolutely!
@@mrb7094 Stark but not beautiful by any means or imagination. Damp and cold in the summer and unbearably cold in winter. Not for me.
@@OldDocSilver I get it Thad. I really do. If I had my way I'd live in the Bahamas, for most of the year, probably. But I also have a 'North of the Soul'. I reside in the North too and this scenery is not unfamiliar, to say the very least. I only have to look from my window.
An accident of birth.
But sweet are the uses of adversity, and when the winter wind blows, I shall smile and say 'This is no flattery: these are counsellors that feelingly persuade me what I am.'

SUPERB VIDEO
My wife will be going there for work setting off on Wednesday 12th Dec 2018
I am hoping that she will find time to take photographs amongst the work load looking at plastics in the marine and terrestrial environments.
Somewhere, on the left hand side of the bay approaching Grytviken, are the remains of an Argentine helicopter shot down during their invasion in April 1982. Not sure where it is in your video, but it is a scar of the Falklands War.

Thank you Daniel for sharing. This bought back great memories. I worked on South Georgia back in 2000.
how many people live over there?
@@MuhammadShoaib-vs5ps Usually 18, and sometimes up to about 30, but only during their summer (January, February, March). Mostly scientists, but there's also a magistrate, a postmaster general, and the museum curator during that time.
really beautiful. Thanks.
Beatiful!!! I have been fascinated by South Georgia for years! thank you for sharing this!
Very fascination video. Thank you for posting.

Thanks. This showed me different angles and different spots that I never saw looking up pictures of the place.
Marvelous! Thank you.
Wow... thanks for posting this. I spent a week there in 1991 and loved it. Brings back some memories!
Amazing video. Very interesting. Maybe I'll get to visit myself one day.
Really amazing! I'd love to make it down there one day.
It has deteriated a lot since I was there in January 1995 for almost two weeks on an amateur radio expedition. Three of us operated as VP8SGP. The two sealing ships are still there and I see the whaling ship, the Petrel, is still there. The docks were intact and we used them to offload our supplies. We put our tents in the blubber factory, which I see is no longer intact nor the mechanic shed where we set up our radios. The barracks building was in much worse shape when we were there. The church looks the same, and the foot pump organ actually worked when we were there.
Do you know if there are any ham radio operators working there now? If I visit, I'd love to have a go at broadcasting from there, if they'd let me. I'm currently at Introductory level. I plan to start Intermediate this year. I probably won't go there until 2026 at the earliest.
Stunning. Superb footage. I have a Mavic Air 2 and know all about the hazardous nature of flying in Sports mode (see previous comments & answers). I dumped mine straight into the Mediterranean, whilst trying to shoot a friend's boat at full speed (I was operating the drone from the boat). Ouch! Luckily the footage was captured on the app (and was actually quite good). But yes, superb flying and composition from Daniel, despite his freezing fingers. Excellent work.
spectacular view . great job !!!
Bela filmagem.... Parabéns 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
XL-thanks for your breath-takin' views!
Such magnificent isolation.
Visited in 2018 with the Royal Navy (I'm in the RAF) onboard HMS Clyde. Allowed dock right alongside the BAA as we were delivering their mail... I have never in my life seen the stars so bright as I did when I was here. Hosted the BAA on board the ship for a race night and used the ice from the glacier in our drinks. Amazing times.

Nice well done, gives me a good idea of the lay-out of the area and what to expect. Hope to get there some time. Expected the graveyard to be next to the church now know it's a walk. Thanks
Really nice!
Great clip, I wish I could go there, Like the leading lights to guide you into the bay safely they look quite new.

Amazing video.
Such interesting place.. Looks peaceful.
Read about this in BBC News.. Great to have a bird’s eye view of this piece of history 👌
People also can live there too. So quiet and lovely

That water is so clear! But so cold I imagine.
Was there in 93 same time of year. There was lots of ice then on the mountains and the beach was made of whale bones.

Thank you for posting this footage. I visited South Georgia in 1989 and 1990. We spent time at Stromness, Leith Harbour and Gritviken. In those days you could explore the whaling stations. While I would love to go back, I am not sure a few hours ashore would be enough.
No trees or bushes could grow in such of tundra enviroment. Only some very special bushes like in the north of Norway exist but you can find them more likely in Falkland islands which is more similar to Argentinian Patagonia climate, fauna and flora. Still a beautiful landscape full of life.
I live very close to those islands but is very expensive to visit them. So thank you for the footage, amazing!

One of the old Norwegian whaling stations that created a lot money for the Norwegian owners back in the old days. Beautiful video.
Spectacular!
I would love the opportunity to spend a few days there to explore the old whaling station.
Parabéns pelo vídeo! Feliz dia pra uma bela visita em Grytviken. Conseguiu mostrar a tundra presente no verão antártico. Belíssimo visual da ilha.
Visited Chrismas day 1983. Not much changed. Wrecked Argentine puma on the high ground above the cemetary seems to have gone. A couple of the whalers gone too.
Yes the Puma wreck is still there - it is faintly visible in this video. It goes off screen (to the left) at about the 5:53 mark - it's well removed from the cemetery - from memory about a 30 minute walk maybe ?
@@DanielMcCurdyNZ Thanks, I was flying in a Gazelle so the distance seemed less to me. That was a long time ago and the video brought it all back to me. The church had a lean on in those days. Nice it is being preserved now.
Excellent footage. very quiet no sign of life, 'Like Aberdeen on a Flag Day'!!

Daniel excellent footage, really smooth - you’re a good drone pilot! Did you fly it in sport mode? I’m asking this judging by the speed. I was waiting longtime for your next video and here it is! Good complement to the 3D scanning ones. Please send more if possible. Thanks!
Thank you ! No this was shot in Cinematic mode - flying at full speed, which is still very slow compared to Sports Mode. In Sports Mode the Mavic Air flies so fast that it goes beyond the limit of the gimbal to stabilise. In Sports Mode it would fly from the station to the survey base (along the road) in about 7 seconds.
To be honest we spent most of our time doing aerial photography with the drone (in between scanning), so I didn't have too much time to play around with making nice videos. The wind was too high most of the time to be able to get stable footage, this was probably the most calm day we had and the winds picked up about an hour after this was taken. It was freezing cold during this flight too, so my fingers kept freezing up, hence the occasional jerking motion !!
I'll have some really good scanning and drone videos up in a few weeks from South Georgia, Australia and USA :-)
Daniel I don’t know why on my mavic the cinematic mode it flies really slow...some questions: many buildings look to be in very good shape (like the church for example) there is people still living there? I though it was a ghost town or something, abandoned long ago.
Grytviken is the one station that has been "cleaned up' (asbestos removal, unsafe building removal etc...) so it serves as a cruise ship destination and many of the buildings are reused by either the government, British Antarctic Survey or South Georgia Heritage Trust. All the buildings on the right hand side of the station are the museum and related buildings. On the left are workshops and stores. The BAS base (at the end of the road) is lived in all year round by scientists and base staff. The Church is still used fairly regularly and is constantly maintained. Most buildings have had new roofs put on recently and most have been re-clad.
so cool!!!!!!!!
The Earth is great without people!Great vid!
Wow awesome, I was there In 1994 for 5 months

I was based down here for 4 half months, helped refelt the church, patrolled over to St Andrews bay to replen the safe huts scattered over the Island. Mount Duce, Mount Hodges, Gull Lake, all completely beautiful. It was hard work when you were there and needed something SLIGHTLY bigger than an air rifle to kill the bloody rats. Defo would love to see the place again ,alot of great memories with great people.

Hermoso paramo ...
What a storied island. I'd so love to go there, to visit Shackleton's grave site.
Went to Stromness just after the Falklands war ended. Argentinians had scuttled two whaling tenders alongside and had pulled over the church spire. Surprised as to how much building has been going on.
Two thumbs up!
these are the types of places id like to go
Is it all abandoned now? What a place!
This was fascinating!!! I came to investigate after I saw the volcano on a map when I was checking on an earthquake from 8/12/21. Those buildings look to be in excellent shape…I’m assuming they aren’t occupied and the island is deserted? And water is beautiful! I’m assuming is glacier melt water from the color. Was is quiet there? I don’t know what an active volcano sounds like, but it seems like being in the middle of, literally, nowhere, it would be eerily quiet.

Human is different god thankyoufor the talents and the intelligents, ofahuman beings.
It feels like very encient style village!
In regards to recent and past earthquakes. What does South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands do in case of earthquakes? Would they be able to contact anyone in regards to needing rescue or aid? Or is the small town equipped of what to do? This looks like a nice quiet somewhat remote place to visit.
There is a British Antarctic Survey base at Grytviken, (the red/white buildings on the other side of the harbour from the main station), which has a satellite uplink etc... It is very well equipped for the scientists that reside there.

Hello Daniel, I love your video and I would love to use few seconds of your footage for an educational movie I make about Antarctica and South Georgia. I have been to Grytviken but I haven't got the chance (and the permission !) to use my drone above the station. I hope we can find an arrangement ! Thanks
Hi Sòlene. Thanks for your comment - if you'd like to email, I can get you in touch with the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, as they have control over the use (and resuse) of the footage. Go to www.geometria.co.nz and find my email under Daniel McCurdy, flick me an email and I'll get the ball rolling for you. Cheers, Dan

Excellent, are you going to accompany it with music?
Wow,
Super footage. But there was no sign of the local Sainsbury's.
Game : Did you find the drone driver location ? ;)
Would you recommend taking a drone on a cruise to these islands? Do you need a permit?
Yes you need a permit to fly a drone anywhere on or near the islands, partly since there is a very real risk of impacting bird populations. All of our work was undertaken with and for GSGSSI, with guidance from experts on the islands. I would generally say don't take a drone with you, but I don't speak for the GSGSSI, so maybe get in touch with them directly.
Hi, what are those black [dark spots] in the water if I may ask, close to the shore
Hi Luke - those are clumps of seaweed. They look weird from above, because you can see them descending down to the sea floor ! At some of the stations the seaweed forests are so thick they can make landing at the beaches problematic.
@@DanielMcCurdyNZ Wow thank you so much for the info. You so right, it looks peculiar from up above. Had no idea it's seaweed thank you Daniel

Why does the church and another building with a red roof look like they are being maintained ?
Most of the remaining buildings at Grytviken are maintained, for use as a museum, storage, workshop etc... The church was in the process of having some of the rotted timber in the windows replaced at the time of this flight. During the summer months it's actually surprisingly busy at Grytviken!
Because they are maintained! The church was restored 20 years ago and is used for carol services and weddings. The red-roofed building is the museum.

It's a bay down there, a safe haven for vessels to moore. Some hundred meters away is open sea and shaky.
Grytviken sound Swedish or maybe Norwegian.. In swedish it means Pot Bay. Is that because of the huge pots / barrels in the video lol? Or is it owned by scandinavian fishermen?
