  • ID Software knocks it out of the park at this year's Xbox Showcase by showing off a trailer for Doom The Dark Ages, and it looks every bit as amazing as I'd want it to.

      Yes, but not saving this time, there are tons of original and so damn great indie shooters, some are as good as doom itself. But it was doom that showed them, that shooters are not dead and people are hungry for them.

    This trailer started peak and just kept reaching higher heights! I cannot express enough how excited I am to get to the dragon companion!

    If you listen closely to the kick DOOM SLAYER does, you can faintly hear the bloodpunch sfx.

    I like the style getting grittier and more visually cohesive again, like 2016. Eternal overdid it a bit i felt with the cartoonish style. Gameplay wise i think it'll be even more batshit than Eternal. First trailer for that looked really slow compared to how insanely fast and complex the game ended up being, this feels similar. Sign me the f*ck up

      I'm loving the way the game looks so far. The idea that it'll get crazier already has me foaming at the mouth in excitement.

      I am hoping the game play will not be as fast paced and hectic as DOOM Eternal. It became too much IMO. This when they say "grounded" seems like less double jumping and being all over the place is done with. More like straight forward. Sure the combat will be intense etc. But as seen in trailer it's more into action and not jumping around and constantly moving fast. Instead it has moments of Power bursts and slams etc. A build up to unleash. That is more satisfying for me. Because constant brain melting pace just means everything blends together into a mash and nothing sticks out as a "punch" moment.

      @@Swecan76 yeah, i think what you describe is close to what we'll get, slower overall, but still challenging through other means than pure speed. For example you can see a "parry" in the trailer, and the shield throw will be a balance between giving up defensive options temporarily for a powerful offensive move, so lots to manage and think about regardless of pace. I think the game will be slower in a way, but not easier because of it.

    1:50 I think this is a glory kill right here. The animation the enemy does here, looks like a stunned glory kill state. And if the Flail is any indication, the glory kills may just be instant now.

    I read an article the other day that Hugo Martin was saying that he wants Doom the dark ages to feel like you are entering the matrix and are able to strafe through every bullet. Also the name for the gun you were looking for was the Unmaykr. But I am so beyond hyped for this game, eternal and Titanfall 2 are the only FPS games I have played that I lived every bit of and 2016 is dam near perfect I just didn't vibe with it as much, I have so much faith that ID software will pull a home run here.

    There was also another thing I was surprised you didn't notice: Projectile speed. Check out the projectiles launched by the mancubi and the revenant: their projectile speed seem to have slowed down compared to the previous two instalments.
    I don't know if this is a 'bug' or not, but the way the mancubi rockets travel slowly and straight ahead (iow, not affected by gravity) might be a callback to how projectiles acted in the original Doom I and II. Am I trippin? Otherwise I'm really f*cking happy.

      Contrast to the projectiles of the Arachnatron, that guy ain't messing about with its rapid fire shots. Not sure if it's done for the music on the trailer or whether some enemies like the Arachnatron will be buffed in comparison to previous DOOM entries.

    Based on the recent interview I think they're getting rid of glory kills and substituting it with more melee. I'm really looking forward to a change in gameplay. I think ID doesn't want to just keep making the same game and I'm totally down for it

      I can see it now more that you've pointed it out. I've just gotten so used to seeing the imps be the hunched over lil guys instead of the 7-foot brown bodybuilders they used to be in the original.

    Flying the dragon also makes me think that this game will be open world...Where you can travel and backtrack to previous areas. More exploration based vs just combat arenas.

    The Super Shotgun is a lever action.
    And DooM: The Dark Ages takes place before DooM ‘16 and Eternal.
    But yeah I am excited for the game.
    Too bad Mick G won’t be returning.

    the sheild might charge a meter, or get weaker the more you defend
    also hopefully we will get glory kills, but it might not show cause we're used to it now

      Honestly, I'm not a big fan of glory kills. They got boring and stale after awhile of doing them, so hopefully they're reworked a bit.

    There are definitely pros and cons to each of the new DOOM games. 2016 for me was just too monotone (so much red, brown and grey), I didn't like the enemy designs and some of the systems definitely felt undercooked. Eternal improved on each of these points massively but ended up being a bit too bloated in every aspect. What I hope is that TDA will strike a better balance between the two.

    Hopefully they reel in some of the gameplay stuff from Eternal. I wasn't a huge fan of the gameplay of limited ammo to mega punch/chainsaw loop. And some of the enemies were kind of tedious to fight. Pretty hype about parrying shit though. Maybe they'll throw in some Hexen/Heretic references in there as well.

      Long play sessions of Eternal tended to make my fingers cramp after a certain point. Hopefully they manage to keep the engagement gameplay without making me do a carpal tunnel speedrun at the same time.

      @Shweelan Yea, it's one of the few games where I had to reconfigure my keyboard/mouse layout so I wouldn't be uncomfortably reaching for everything. Still the reason I haven't replayed since launch and skipped the DLC.

      I played through the whole thing on controller and some of the inputs you have to hit to switch around your toolset felt like playing DDR using the monster hunter claw. Hands were ready to fall off by the hour mark.

      ​@Shweelan Sounds like actual torture. I started out trying it on controller. But once I saw how the game wanted me to play and I saw that weapon wheel, I noped the hell out of there and dusted off my 10 button logitech mouse.

    This game should of done away with the silly shield first we had the silly grappling hook on the shotgun and now this shield lol. Yes it looks good and fun but like you said Captain America or a Wonder Women something that we already had in killing floor 2 game a crappy shield. Also i don't want to drive a giant mech if i did i would've played a titanfall game lol just give me doom not what other games has already done even the new crappy looking buggy serious sam had a mech lol Feels more like a Kong vs Godzilla on kong island to me than a doom game the more i watch the trailer. Less doom more Kong especially after a watching Godzilla x Kong so have Kong as the doom slayer and you have a kong game without the guns but with his Axe and shield lol
