Rod Stewart ~ Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? 1978 Disco Purrfection Version

- I finally got around to doing something with Rod Stewart's 1978 "sellout" disco song "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" four years after I first thought about doing it. I got my paws on the instrumental and a capella tracks to come up with this Disco Purrfection version. The original disco remix is a classic in itself and there was nothing new I could have brought to the turntables using that version.
Back in da day, Rod took a LOT of heat for this one. I don't get it since the Rolling Stones had also succumbed to the disco beat with "Miss You" and were not subjected to the same vitriol. I don't agree that "Rod Stewart has completely betrayed his talent" by recording this one. His songs have always been telling a story and this is no different except that it is sexually charged, but not unlike "Tonight's The Night" that had previously spent 8 weeks at #1.
I remember it more because of the copyright lawsuit filed on behalf of worldbeat jazz guitarist Jorge Ben who had recorded a song he called "Taj Mahal". That song is a 1972 disco stomper with the simplest of disco production, most memorable for the "doo doo doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo doo doo" wordless chorus that effectively is the same six syllable phrasing of "If you want my body, and da ya think I'm sexy, come on baby let me know" with the identical melody.
Rod knew a good hook when he heard one and that one was big enough to hang his hat on. He capitulated to the suit and then turned around and donated all of the royalties of "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" to UNICEF and performed it on "Song For UNICEF" on January 10, 1979 which happened to be his 34th birthday.
He smartly moved on the smouldering rock of "Passion" in 1980 then was on to the next thing and issued "Tonight I'm Yours" a new wavish affair that hit with "Young Turks" and the title track going Top 20. "Baby Jane" was a loping tune that also went Top 20. He got all the way to #6 pop with the gritty and nastily fun "Infatuation", a song produced by Michael Omartian.
He has maintained a connection with the record buying public since then, especially after having signed with Clive Davis then new "J" label, his last release was 2015's "Another Country". He signed with Capitol Records in 2013 and still remains a formidable concert draw as evidenced by his Las Vegas stint which ends this September 1st, 2017. - Hudba
I loved being a teenager in the 70’s, best times, best music ever!
You said it! Best decade of music EVER.
@@hollyherring71 the 70 was the best for I us to like the disco up and country xx
RIP Donna Summer
Good old day's work at 7 o'clock finished by ll o'clock in the mornings away go in the company van
So lucky of you
This’s what I called ‘music’. Not the ones from nowadays. Period!
Steve Dahl and everyone at Comiskey Park on July 12, 1979, will most definitely beg to differ as to what you called music. Everyone from every generation says the same thing about music from "nowadays" regardless what year or decade.
❤ who is here in 2024 to listen go this....its no about years gone by , way back is about the present 💝 moment also for me ..and My answer to all and song . YES 💯 no Doubt.. Very Special 💟❤🤗💕💌
sellout?? The man's a legend! His career covers many genres of music!
79!!! what a year of reveling!!
1978 WAS A GREAT YEAR FOR POP MUSIC.
This track always suffered from terrible remixes, this version is pure heaven.
N-Trance did a great job!
That's because Disco Cat doesn't really try to change anything up or add a bunch of annoying synth stuff to "make it his own", he just takes what was already great and makes it a bit longer. Plus, it's really cool to hear certain instruments isolated that you couldn't really hear before.
Yes, the isolation of instruments really stands out for me! 🥰
This one is just beautiful layering of the original that makes it so good. I always come back to this
My mom was so in love with Rod Stewart and still is. She is 71 now. I grew up listening to Rod Stewart. I’m 50 now. My mom had this on 8 track.
hahaha...I had this on 8 track too...I am 59...and still rockin' and dancin'! omg!
Yeah me too it makes me feel good. The times were great in 70,s
Yeah, the 70,s were great. I'm 50 too. Sure didn't have to worry bout a face mask in them days.
Yeah! Lisa, I member those 8 tracks!! Great Era!!! I'm 69 still Rock n Roll!!!! Keep Rocking, Lisa!!
He is a whole Legend!
Love this song since I was 13!! OMG!
RIP Phil Chen, who was Rod's bassist from 1977-1980. He just passed away at the age of 80. I loved the bass line in this one.
Absolutely. One of the cleanest bass lines of the disco era. A Chinese-Jamaican bassist. It doesn't get much funkier than that.
is that the asian cat with that crazy base break and dance moves in the video
@@levyloeafoe5302 Yep, that's him.
No ablo Takakakkakkaka 😎😛
@@gothrouss6697 Huh???
This is the best version of the song
Saw Rod Stewart at the Red Parrot in NYC, in the 80s. He was hanging in the shadows while his then girlfriend, Kelly Emberg, was awarded Model of the Year. He was too cool.
the thought of your comment should be commemorated in a FRANK ZAPPA SONG

That juicy funk guitar, rods husky voice, that cute and fruity rhodes e-piano, those catchy Asian pentatonic strings and of course that thumping bass line 👌🏻
I'm a professional singer. Rod Stewart was my mentor ❤
When the world was a better place. Good old days. 🕺💃💖💖💖💖💖💥💥💥💥💥💥

Beautiful Masterpiece Of A Song Just Listening To This Song Is Pure Bliss.
Saudações do BRASIL.
Soube que seu PRESIDENTE tem feito um belo trabalho aí em EL SALVADOR
Rod Stewart surprised a many artists when he knocked this out the park. Shifting from a rock genre and stepping into a disco beat was not a guaranteed success but he did it.
Kiss. I was made for loving you knocked it out of the park
He took a lot of criticism for making this record. But, it was a huge hit! I love this song and Rod was and still is Sexxxy 😉
It was at that moment he was invited to the hood bar b q 💯
It was easy for him being a caucasian male jumping on the disco bandwagon and being on a major record label in Warner Brothers. Please.
@@elenaarman-tang7811 Made the same time the Stones went disco with Miss You in 1978. Also a hit.
STILL one of The Best disco tunes, ever!!
RIP Phil
A master of his craft!
His bass line for this song was
fire...🔥🔥🔥
No olvidemos que a la bateria estaba otro gigante, Carmine Appice
Had the best times back in the 70's, great music and dancing, sure miss those days.

"She sits alone waiting for suggestions."
How can you not love lines like that?! Love this tune, it's rock meets disco at its best, 1977 when Disco was just about to have rocket boosters once Saturday Night Fever came out this year! 🙏🎹 Paul, Disco.lover, Bristol UK 🇬🇧

I was 13 years old boy living in Italy in 1978. All I had was my small Japanese radio and a Saturday night broadcast from a Napoli radio station. My friend Gina would visit and we would dance in my room to Saturday night dance party on the radio. I was so young, foolish and naive but it Was Epic :) I still think about her sometime. She had the best smile. Ever.
Great story Zio!
