As usual, very impressive work Jake, and very satisfying, and therapeutic, observing your 'lathemanship'! Likewise, very impressive results down range sir! 👍
Both Teresa and I have experienced that poi shift with our impacts,,. I wrapped one layer of thin clear tape around the shroud were the front and rear supports are,,. It just snugged it up tighter and helped the poi by about 6mm smaller shift improvement,, yes it can drive a personr crazy lol 😂
Awesome work bud 👌 a really enjoyable watch, the machine work was as expected and that all in one transfer port came out lovely 🤯 absolutely top draw mate and is a real testament to your skill 🙌👌👍 I look forward to seeing the polygonal barrel and the results of the barrel polishing 😁👍 atvb mate 👌
Thanks mate, a little more work to do but its nearly there, looking forward to the poly results myself, its going to be an interesting test. Thanks for watching.
Thanks, I refuse to go below M2, after that its a lottery if the taps going to break, luckily most of the rifle stuff is between M3 and M6, Thanks for watching.
Hello Sub12, i have had the same barrel from chambers on my rapid 7 for a while now, its very accurate but they need cleaning every 100 shots or accuracy and flyers start appearing. I also have a rotex rm8 wth a lothar barrel, its the same. My original theoben barrel prefers to be leaded up.
Love the videos Geoff. Just fitted the carbon fibre barrel stiffener in my fx and so far so good. Results are looking good for the lothar Walter barrel. Be great to see how the polygon barrel works.
Thanks, we tried the carbon stiffener ages ago but couldn't find any difference, but it probably effects different rifles in different ways, the poly will be an interesting test looking forward to that. Thanks for watching.
Its nice to be able to do your own work and do real comparisons that you think of !............... that way you have real data and not just heresay ................. keep it up !
Hi jake, Great Videos. I am also making a .22 FX barrel for slugs from a surplus walther .22 rifle with a 1:16 twist. I have sleeved the chamber from brass, so it can be easily replaced & experimented with etc. (eg dfferent seating depths) Question: the internal 5.5 x 1.5 o-ring for the pellet probe is a PITA to machine & to fit. Seeing that i am also making pin probes, which are easy - have you considered an external rod 0-ring on the probe rather than the internal one? Strikes me this would be easier?
And again a 1a video from you. Each step is comprehensible. Which trigger do you use? He does not look like the original trigger of the impact. My trigger remains at the end of the stage 1, although I've already tried everything with the settings. Thank you
I've continuously heard SS Walther barrels are difficult to chamber due to their hardness. Did you find this also or notice any special cutting oils helped?
Would be interesting to see you do this to a larger sample of the same type of barrels. To eliminate errors in the barrels manufacturing process. Also, would you mind testing the STX liner using one of their carbon fiber liner sleeves installed? (Glued) I have the feeling that would tighten the groups a bit. After all, I believe we're looking for the tightest possible groups between the two.
Yeah, a larger sample would provide more reliable results, we tried the carbon liner sleeve and could not get it to make any difference at all, we are shooting sub 12 so it may help in FAC but for sub 12 it made little to no difference, we did not glue it though, if we were to go down that route I would prefer an epoxy composite mix, pour that around the liner and see what happens, maybe if we can get our hands on a spare liner one of these days ill test it out. Thanks for watching.
Excellent work sir as usual from a fellow machinist retired now and just got my fx impact m3 with 22 and 25 barrels would like to make my own barrel at home on my old sheldon lathe where did you purchase that barrel blank always like watching your machining videos not many of us manual machinists left everything is cnc but I can barely operate this smartphone thank you very much
Yeah I sped through the lead on the vid, but what I did for this one was machine out the rifling just past the transfer port to just over the size of a pellet, (4.8mm), using a micro boring bar then once I had cut the rifling away where I wanted it I used the top slide to put a shallow angle on the rifling so the pellet can be fed into the rifling gently rather than being smashed against it, then when we did the first round of polishing we concentrated on that area first before moving down the barrel until the pellet could be fed into the rifling with a light amount of pressure and lead was not dragged of the skirt. Thanks for watching.
Can you help me out, i need a slug barrel for my Umarex gauntlet 1st gen 25 cal, looking at lothar Walther blanks, only info i can find on the barrel is right hand twist 1:20 choked but I don't know if that is correct
Sorry to bother, may I trouble you for the groove turning tool you're using as well. I've searched and can't find it. A video on quality tooling would be nice if you care to do one. Thank you for teaching me, I love your videos.
Thanks, I get my tooling from cutwel UK, you can find the tool I use here, www.cutwel.co.uk/lathe-tools/small-part-internal-machining/microscope-internal-machining-system/microscope-inserts/microscope-grooving-inserts/microscope-coated-carbide-square-grooving-insert-blih-series-cutwel-pro
Geoff , Out of interest can you get a superior liner in 177 as looking on the FX site both the Maverick and the Impact are fitted with the old STX liner in 177 guise , which has put me off getting either? Cheers Mate
Yes you can. I got mine from Sportsman gun centre but looks like Krale and Bagnallandkirkwood have them. M3 has it as standard. Mine is better than the old STX with a wider range of lighter pellets but only in 4.50 diameter (despite lots of polishing to try to open up the throat and choke) but it won’t live with the old STX with 10.34 grn JSB. I find that indexing the liner helps massively to reduce POI shift and for a straight trajectory- don’t just use the 12 o’clock position try more. LOADS of testing needed to get the best out of your sub 12 .177 Impact. Hope this helps.
Charles many thanks for that mate but in some ways a bit worrying that when you spend that much money you still have spend time and effort to get it perform! Seems to me that FX rifles really perform best in their FAC spec.?
You can do if they have a slight bend in them, but if they have a major kink its better to buy new, just do a little at a time and keep checking it on something nice and flat like a glass table or kitchen worktop. Thanks for watching.
I get mine from T.W chambers, pricey but I have always gotten a good barrel, if you want a shorter blank you can sometimes find weihrauch blanks which are supposedly good as well. Thanks for watching.
Can't find the CZ blanks for sale in the UK, I may try and get a hold of one from another rifle though, I have ordered a Weihrauch barrel blank though, but that's going on a different rifle for testing. Thanks for watching.
Could you custom the lothar walther polygon barrel for my fx impact m3,please sir? If you could , I’d like to replace the stock on my m3, please let me know sir! Thank you
Barrels causing flyers ? The only item that cannot change apart from clogging up with lead ! POI changes due to heat, yes had that, but I would blame flyers on inconsistency of ammo and velocity before the barrel and before that, inconsistency of hold. Jake how about making a jig to hold the rifle, that doesn't stop recoil and can operate the trigger remotely, taking human error completely out of the operation. Oh and lets not forget ! Barrel harmonics and the Potter rule ! The barrel chooses the pellet ! Has anyone tested a load of different pellets through the Daystate Red Wolf with built in chronograph yet ? Now that would be interesting !
I agree for the most part but the barrel can definitely cause fliers to appear, anything from the choke being to tight or a little rough spot in the rifling can be very detrimental in the way the rifle shoots. A perfect example on this is the Benjamin Akela, when we first got that rifle the barrel was rough to say the least, we spent some time removing the burrs from the transfer port and lead and it was much better, not fantastic but much better, then we incrementally polished the barrel, and started polishing out the choke, whilst not touching the rest of the rifle only concentrating on the barrel we got it to the point where it will now consistently do one hole groups at 50 yards. I didn't mention it on the vid but we always carry about 20 tins of half empty tins of pellets from all different manufactures and types, to do pellet testing with. Thanks for watching.
That is why I say that many people start machining a barrel without having the necessary tools for a barrel to be accurate, a question 🙋♂️ where is the choke for better precision, and also another thing that you did not do is look for the Twist twist, so that the projectile remains vertical all the time, if you shoot at 30 yards and then at 100 yards the projectile falls below the point where you aimed, it cannot go horizontal, if this happens your work is wrong you must look vertical twist twist

Great job
Looking forward to the polygon results. Nice matching 👍
Me too, quite excited to try that to be honest, lots of talk about them not working in sub 12 but we will soon find out. Thanks for watching.

Awesome.
