This was live at Knebworth 1990, the Silver Clef Award Winners concert. The lineup included Phil both solo and with Genesis, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Tears for Fears and others.

Phil performs in god mode! This song live is always epic. Who knew a song about a man who likes to pay a hooker to pretend to be his mom would be such an epic hit.
Mama is a universal term dude, like "she's a hot Mama". Or girls say "he's my Daddy". Its about a prostitute but has nothing to do with "his" Mama. 🤣🤪

phil's a monster singer but go back and dig him on drums. in the peter gabriel era of genesis, he was the drummer. 1971--74. for the next few records he's singer and drummer. mind-blowing. then they evolved, sold out, you decide.

Uhhh, I highly doubt it. This song was written in 1983.

Did you read that somewhere or are you just assuming it? Do you have proof that Collins ever said that? Just because the songs came out close to the same time doesn't mean squat. I watched The Message official video and the laugh in that is almost a chuckle, not even close to the same as what Phil is doing plus the lighting effect. That actually comes from an earlier Genesis tune that Peter Gabriel sang called The Musical Box, and Peter did something similar in the closing verse with a light shining up on his face wearing an old man mask.
