It's been 5 years now, there must've been new breakthroughs in the field! Would love to see an update on this topic!
there have been a lot breakthroughs and more discovered hallmarks of aging. i think the biggest player is AI. rly exciting stuff
@@ryepooh5052 shut up you don't know what AI means
I'm planning to angle myself into this field as a biomedical engineer, and I can tell you multiple leading figures have estimated 20 years for big advancements. Some say they are already there(one person, but he's taking upwards of 100 pills a day and has tons of money). Aubrey de Grey has been estimating 2035 for Longevity Escape Velocity - the point where new treatments come out every year that add more than a year to your life for every year you live. Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte has published a study recently where he expressed three specific Yamanaka Factors(tl;dr, 4 turn cells back to stem cells) in mice and their cells showed signs of rejuvenation and they physically appeared to look younger. He's thrown out the estimate of 20 years - so 2042. Another result using the same mechanic that was the proof of concept was done in David Sinclair's Harvard Lab that used those factors to restore the optic nerve.
And, this is where I want to work, Altos Labs was founded earlier this year with an astounding pool of scientists(including aforementioned Dr. Belmonte and Shinya Yamanaka) with $3 billion in funding from two people - one of whom is Jeff Bezos. If you're Gen Z, at the current rate of progress you're likely on the cusp - a 50/50 of making it in my eyes. I myself have started working out this year in order to improve my odds cause I'm an early zoomer, but on the flipside my living relatives are living looong(dead at 94, doing very well at 88 and 85. I like my personal odds). Some people will say Gen Z is likely to make it based on above, but those were specific scenarios. The experiment that visibly made mice younger(and actually did too) was done on genetically modified mice to produce the factors when exposed to a specific chemical. One of the struggles in genetic engineering is affecting the whole body - every single cell in the body - and is something that needs more work before we go up and say "holy shit just need to wait for clinical trials!" The point is the concepts have been proven to a degree in one aspect, a lot of execution and other therapies will need to be done.
To end on some good news, 3D printing organs is on the rise. My school, not a huge one, is just getting a cell 3D printer. You'll be able to regrow your organs and replace them, and multiple trials are currently in the work that will hopefully turn out good in humans. Therapies will come in our lifetimes, and the field is only going to grow. So have faith, and enjoy your life in the meantime instead of waiting for the end of aging.
@@ChubbyMooshroom9 i think ur right about gen z. there may be a chance and we also have cryonics

People who say they don't want to live forever should still support this because you can always change your mind later but not if you're already dead. I have been saying this... longevity is our choice! If we want to sustain our health, we have to do something about it! This will start by knowing what supplies our body needs. Start by eating a balanced diet, quit vices, exercise regularly and take an NMN supplement. Mine is a 500mg per day, NMN by Vitruvin.
I agree with you on taking an NMN supplement. I also take a nicotinamide riboside supplement and apply daily SPF to my face to prevent skin cancer and delay visible signs of aging.

@@TuanLe-wz1ko thats extremly optimistic. if there is a breakthrough in this aging stuff, it will be for rich people only for our generation
The dilemma, at least for me, is that if you live until you “choose to die”, then wouldn’t that be no different than suicide? I would never be able to have the guts to just voluntarily die. Another dilemma, is that if people were to “live much longer”, say like 400 years, then the balance between birth and death would be out of order, until eventually the population would stabilize at a very ludicrous population value, assuming birth rates per woman stay constant. This could exceed the carrying capacity on Earth, so we’d either have to reduce or birth rate or spread throughout the solar system to accommodate for the unavoidable population increase caused by lifespan increase.
But If I don't age, how am I supposed to get away with sitting on the porch yelling at kids and using words like 'hooligan', and 'whippersnapper'? Do that when you look like you're in your twenties, and they start calling mental health professionals.

I don’t know how that would relate to metabolism for size, but it wouldn’t surprise if some of the adaptations to maintain sufficient aerobic respiration going even under physical stress, would also play a role in helping to reduce long term tissue damage and help more complete repair of damaged tissue (people do scar over more as well, but said scar tissue is generally tougher as well)

i dont want to die. I want to see the future.
Life is what gives meaning to life and death is NOT inevitable and I'll explain why:
Technology is all about overcoming nature; all medical conditions will become curable, all accidents will be prevented, people will become more physically durable, ect., so all of the problems that cause death will be cured.
Cryonics is a medical experiment that has all of the evidence in the literature supporting its feasibility, so it's realistic to think that people who are cryopreserved under the best current conditions have a good chance of being revived in the future.
Rejuvenation research is the area of scientific research in which underlying damages that build up and lead to medical conditions (such as most cancers, Alzheimer's, dementia, ect.) are explored in order to create medical therapies (called "rejuvenation biotechnologies"); after the rejuvenation biotechnologies are developed, the elderly will become perfectly healthy, which will, as a side effect of staying perfectly healthy, lead to indefinite lifespans (this is called "longevity escape velocity"); Aubrey de Grey from the SENS Research Foundation thinks there's a 50/50 chance of people reaching longevity escape velocity by the year 2036.

I am the same way however we have an elephant in the room:
The conversation noone seems to be ready for is how to deal with population growth even if we do solve aging. If we don't solve population control first, the lack of aging will do more harm than good and I am a SUPPORTER of solving aging saying this. Any claim that I was biased against solving aging would need to also claim I don't like to be alive and healthy. Your move.
It's crazy that people are so smart they can find cures and surgeries for all types of things. We are so grateful for all these scientists.
today i lost a purple book with a star picture on it, have you seen it
+Seth :o Meh, you do have a point. Despite that, I still try to look on the bright side. Humans, despite our many flaws, wars, disputes, and greed are still going for the greater good (at least in our own eyes). We want to make life happier, healthier, and longer as a whole. Sadly there are those who ruin this but still, overall we want what's best for us as a whole
Hydra Except there are anti gouging regulations in price, and providing them en masse at an affordable price to the public populace(majority of working class) is actually beneficial both short but more so in the long term, as the work force will be more productive, less prone to diseases, and even last longer working than retiring, cost effective benefits.
@Hydra
it's also to make less money for other products, since most old people rely on medicines. if their age sicknesses are gone, they wouldn't need to spend money on medicines. so it's kind of a balanced thing on money making in the medical field

Plenty of progress has taken place in geroscience since this video was uploaded. An example being that there's now an actual rejuvenation biotechnology industry featuring a lot of different companies conducting damage repair research. I recommend reading Lifespan IO's Rejuvenation Roadmap that keeps track of how close different lines of rejuvenation research are from entering into clinical trials. For the latest information about geroscience, I recommend reading the Fight Aging articles.
Imagine dying and the next day on TV it says “ scientists found a cure for aging and immortality”
It's like you are 80 years old lying in bed looking at the tv as you are dying they announce it.. that would suck so bad

Only if mankind does not descend into a cesspool of madness, causing societal collapse.
@Ayomide Idowu But in any case mankind will expand and while the chances are unlikely, there could be a possibility of Mars being habitable far into the future.
Going forward in time is a posibility due to phisycs and space traveling, but being alive during all that time in the same spot in our planet is a much bigger issue.

People who want to die early can always just commit sudoku, after all
Honestly, I don't want to die. There's just so much that could be gone forever in an instant and I'd rather be here to experience it. I mean, assuming there isn't any sort of continuation after death like reincarnation, an after life or something like that. Personally, I think when you're gone that's it, but I could get behind reincarnation (as a human) or maybe even some way to repeat my own life in an endless cycle of birth and death as the same person. I don't think any of it's gonna happen, but still.
Also, just to clarify, I'm not casting any shade towards anyone's own beliefs. It's perfectly fine if you don't think the same thing as I do, but I do think I have as much of a right to talk about my own thoughts and beliefs as anyone else (of course if it's in good faith and I'm not being rude in any way). Again, not trying to be rude, just writing my thoughts down.
Edit (not the first edit, but I guess the first "major one"): If I lived forever, I wouldn't want to age at the normal rate. What I'd want is eternal youth instead.
I want to become immortal just so I can see how amazing humanity becomes in the future.
Every humans dream

A positive video from this channel? How strange...
Even the existentially terrible videos usually have an optimistic twist.
Yeah, that is true. However, unlike their other videos, this one was fully optimistic. That's what I deemed 'strange'. Not in a negative way. I love how at the end of Kurzgesagt's videos/series they have positive twists to them. Which, in typing this comment, I think I'm realizing part 1 of the series was the gloomy part, and the optimistic twist is part 2 (the conclusion).
ConfusedPal it’s because their videos are informative and objective. Some facts in life are good, some are bad. It’s that simple.
I received a sad vibe because I thought about my parents and this guy just said how weak their bodies became/ will become :/
If only all the big countries in the world would invest in science, as much as they do in military, just imagine what humanity would have achieved today.
Boogie, vacations to the moon
Nothing because all the small countries would take over with their military
YOU DO NOT KNO DA WEI
Of course they would. It isn't like war *became obsolete 150 years ago, because countries don't fight for resources or honor anymore but for Ideological reasons, that slowly die out, because they are minor and stupidic. And we live in an age of Economical Warfare, were countries with best trade network, Universities and brands are culturally colonising others. (cough, merica, cough)*
Military is useless and if you really think about it just a bunch of people trained to be serial killers.
Sebastian Moore he never said they should have no military (which ideally they wouldn't) just that more money should be put to science

The concept of “curing aging” brings a few ethical considerations to the table. A few involving fears of overpopulation, concerns of creating another class system, and many spiritual debates surrounding death. I think there is a difference between curing age related illnesses and curing aging entirely. There is no doubt in my mind that in my lifetime, we will have cures to age related diseases like Alzheimer’s Diseases. In the is theoretical world where we have cured aging, there arises a huge issue of resource management. As our population continues to grow on Earth, we use more and more resources. Average life expectancy from 1950’s to now have increased by approximately 30 years. With longer life expectancy, we can assume that the resource usage will increase equally. This is where modern agriculture practices and sustainable resources become more important than ever. Overall, I am excited to be a part of this medical community that is shifting the focus from increasing age to increasing the amount of time that a person is healthy.
You know what's sad and great about this? I paid $600 to learn about all this in college. this 8 minute video was free...
How about the pc?
but this vid was made not only for education purposes i guess... after watching i think it mainly aims at finding human volunteers for antiageing projects
you probably paid a lot for WiFi, the electronic you’re watching on, most likely a house, and basic needs that keep you alive, so not for free.

Maybe we won't stop aging, but we are ready to regrow hair
specifically on the lower half of our body
Everything grows hair on mice , those things never seem to work on people
Some Guy I would prefer just have hair from neck to head.
The cruelest joke in history would be dying only for biological immortality to be achieved soon after.
That’s just how it is. A lot of people die in the last days before a war ends
Well, you know it is going to apply to people regardless. If it happened today, it would apply to everyone who died yesterday and so on in the future. So guess what: It's guaranteed to apply.
This channel is addicting, and educational.
We should have a day where we thank mice (kinda we do for saints) and other species experimented on; for they have unconsciously saved millions upon millions of lives.
Thankyou mice!
What for? Do mice care? Or you just want to virtue signal and then feel better about yourself?
Mushy Pork
Groundhog Day but it's Mouse Day I guess.
I would assume the mice being experimented on where the experiment turns out badly would care, seeing as even though they may not have human levels of consciousness or intelligence they still feel pain, but hey, that's just my two cents.
they also kill off millions from diseases! :D
Right? And look at them, now we have black appreciation month.

Die of old age 😢
This channel taught me more about life and how the worlds works than my entire time in the U.S education system.
Just wow, please become an education platform, so many people would benefit from your videos and spread of knowledge.
Ryaken the "us education system" is a daycare center for adults.
Yes, because these videos taught you how to read, write, count, talk, co-ordinate, rationalise, problem-solve, empathise, interact with others etc. And not to mention all the basic or perhaps even advanced general knowledge acquired in a broad range of subjects - if you dared to actually pay attention. Rather than an in-depth exploration of a few interesting topics to engage short attention spans, otherwise summarised as indulgence in brain candy. Don’t get me wrong, these videos are highly informative and thought-provoking on seemingly relevant topics, but don’t disregard your entitlement to an education and the opportunities within just because it abides by a systematically constructed attitude of irrelevance and ineffectiveness in outcomes. Of course no education system is perfect, that’s really a matter of opinion, hence the content of your curriculum won’t always seem relevant to you as an individual, and the efficiency or tone in which it is delivered may be far from the best. Still, it helps to meet the system halfway with an attempt to engage and focus even when it’s boring as fuck, because it’s just not feasible to contrast enjoyment with information, as this compressed video so successfully does. I can continue to drone on but you’ve probably already formed some sort of nit-picking rebuttal or lost interest. Just remember, ignorance is bliss and knowledge is power...
They should get rid of the insane and evil oxymoron concept "optimistic nihilism" before that though, and the gnostic atheism.
No one should ever treat death as something positive, or assume that it's "the end". enough people have seen ghosts to confirm that there is consciousness beyond death.
The obsession with the brain as the "source" of consciousness is no good.
Tasorius can you provide sources to prove that people have seen ghosts.
Ryaken I wish

I share your concern, being 23 myself I feel it's rather likely that my generation is either the last to die of traditional aging or the last one to see many of our loved ones die because of it.
Take a look at the Broccoli compound called "sulforaphane". There is a bunch of evidence to support its potential to increase health span.
