From page 16 of the Pacific rulebook: “…the Japanese player can announce at the beginning of this phase that he or she intends to launch one or more kamikaze strikes in that sea zone. They are resolved before any combat begins.” Since retreating happens in Step 6 of the General combat section and the Kamikaze strikes happen before any combat begins, it wouldn’t be reasonable to retreat until one round of combat is done.
Another great video on how the game is played for new players, you do an amazing job explaining all the little finer points involved in playing the game.... keep them coming and I’m sure there are some things even experienced players may have forgotten that they can pick up on, cheers 👍
One round of battle is required before any retreat can happen in original A&A amphibious assault rules, air units only. I never heard of any revision on that but I haven't played every variant yet
the positioning for the Japanese fleet wasn't that great , so in this case I would choose not to scramble to grantee the land battle and use 3 kamikaze on each carrier to make sure he is left with no air craft
For what I understand (and I could be wrong) the Kamikaze Rule only applies to designated aircraft. I believe that if movement allows any attacking units can opt to retreat from combat. Comments clarifying or correcting my comment are more than welcome.

Great points, it was combat round 3 that I realized 3 tokens per carrier was the right distribution for the reason you mentioned.

Great question. I would think 1 rd before retreat.
Great job grasshopper. I'd say Americans have to stay for one combat round.
Really enjoy these battle scenarios.
