Darkest Dungeon - New Players' Guide - Tips for Absolute Beginners! [No Spoilers]

- Welcome to the absolute beginners' guide for Darkest Dungeon: The Crimson Court! While it's ideal for complete newbies, this guide is suitable for anyone who's having trouble beating the game.
Full disclosure: I have played very little of the Crimson Court so far, and apparently my assessment of the Flagellant was a little off - turns out he's pretty OP right now, so he's probably worth taking even for a new player.
Note that I've deliberately tried to stay away from discussing specific strategies. Instead I give a broader overview of how to make decisions within the game, because I feel that's more important for beginners.
Please try to keep the comment section relatively spoiler-free!

Quick question, how did you calculate the 40-45 percent chance to kill? haha
I'm not sure exactly the part you're referring to, but here's the general process with an example.
Say your enemy has 6HP, and you have a 50% chance to hit. If you hit, you will deal 4-7 damage (each outcome evenly weighted, I believe). Your crit chance is 10% - this is the part that complicates things. All of this information is visible in the fight.
As each of the damage outcomes 4, 5, 6 and 7 are equally likely once you hit, you have a 50% chance for a successful hit to kill the 6HP enemy. So you can multiply the hit chance (50%) by the kill chance on hit (also 50%). This gives you a 25% chance to kill. Right? Almost!
What if you crit? This complicates things a little (a lot). Because crits and non-crits have different chances to kill the enemy, we have to split up "chance to hit" into two numbers: "chance to non-crit" and "chance to crit". In this case our chance to crit is 5% overall, because our base chance is 10% but we miss half the time.
So now we have our 50% chance to miss, our 45% chance to hit, and our 5% chance to crit.
If we miss, we never kill the enemy. Obviously.
If we hit, we have a 45% * 50% chance to kill the enemy - 45% for the "attack roll", and 50% for the "damage roll". So we have a 22.5% chance to kill the enemy without critting.
The 5% crit chance guarantees the kill, so we can now just add that to the 22.5% non-crit kill chance, to get a total kill chance of 27.5%.
I've used round numbers here for simplicity, but this can get far too complicated for me to do mentally. Honestly, I usually just eyeball it at this point, but there are still occasions where I have to go through the whole process!

I am convinced that the RNG in DD is set up in such a way that it builds your confidence before utterly destroying you. (This is coming from a guy who lost 9 heroes to the Viscount then beat him in 3 turns flat with the same party composition)
ripp
I still remember the leper i lost in the pigboss fight. Crit from full hp to 0, then Wilbur instantly finishes him off with a squeel of all things, before i get to make a move with any of my guys.
This is why I sometimes hate the RNG in this game. It doesn't feel like true RNG, more like a reaction to what you have just done to punish you.
@@youtubesucks5131 if it was a reaction to what you had done then that wouldnt be RNG would it?
@@TrioFan759 Well, it would still be RNG with min/max preset paramateres

Ya. Dumb mechanic that would not go missed if it was nerfed or flat out scrapped. In my opinion. Maybe I'm just not getting the nuances of the game enough yet and that's why it feels too unfair.
@@2midgetsinanovercoat638 It's part of the design. I started 3 days ago and as far as I'm concerned the goal of this game is to make you clench your cheeks.
People going mad is a fundamental part of that. If it didn't have any consequences on gameplay it wouldn't matter and therefore not induce any stress to the player.
It's a snowball system.
It emphasizes to a) not bringing a hero who is already or close to madness
And
b) not letting that happen in the first place by c) killing them quick and throughly
When my heroes die or go mad and I'm escaping dungeons early and I panic I assume the game is working as intended

I wish i had seen this video the first time i've played , got mad called it ,,shitty game'' went my way (about 2 years ago). Yesterday i've decided to give it another shot and it was worth it :D
I got this game just about a week ago and went in with my waist in the water.
Even if this video is 2 years old, it still fits phenomenally with the more recent version of this game. There may be a few differences here and there, but for the most part it's very similar. Thanks for the video, it has helped tremendously.
“The Really Unfriendly Estate” 😂
Hey man, I recently just dove into this game because it’s out on switch, bought it just from good word of mouth. For the first two days I was absolutely getting my ass handed to. After this video I feel I get a lot of what the game is doing so I’m surviving much longer, thanks for making 50 minutes of learning mechanics engaging.
Amazing tutorial, very detailed, just getting into the game and needed something like this, thanks a lot for it, keep up the great work!
Awesome, glad you liked it and good luck to you! :)
@@YewbPlays the most amazing thing too is that it still holds up, amazing job on an introduction video it really made things simpler
This guide is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. It covers *just* enough to make the game a bit less daunting and let players really enjoy and understand the mechanics, without going over so much that the overwhelming and crushing atmosphere of the game is completely replaced with min/maxing very early on. I've played this game a bit so far (17 hours) but never really got to any real point of progress, despite beating my first boss last time I played it. Lately I've been thinking more on this game though, and have plans for some projects involving it, and this video seriously helped cement my confidence in what I wish to do. So thank you for that, and job well done!
I was very fond of the formatting for this guide in general. The order you approached things was good and flowed naturally from one point to another, the visual editing was nice and clean, particularly with showcasing the provisions, and the equations to help viewers keep track during the combat examples was a much appreciated touch. I can tell a lot of work went into this, and I found it inspiring. So, again, nicely done!
That's really nice to hear, thank you! :)
I second that to the highest degree. very good work!
I third that! Excellent write-up!
I gotta recommend drunk mode for this video (0.75x speed) - I'm just a fast talker and a little excitable, sorry!

Marcus Matthews there’s a lot to learn and even with this guide you won’t know what your messing up till u mess up
Yeah. I'm definitely overwhelmed by this game. So much stats. But it's good.
Which map was giving you the most trouble?
Sir, we don't talk about Rule 3a. Rule 3a is something a Darkest Dungeon player discovers about themselves. When I realized I was a horrible person devaluing adventurers based on cost-benefit analyses was when the game really grabbed me.
I felt the same way, having to get the turnover rate of McDonald's to make $$$ was hard. I will say though some characters have really high stat numbers by nature, so can be worth even the worst locked in quirks.

One important thing that you left out is formation management. Proper positioning of your party and disturbing the enemies positioning increases the effectiveness of your party by a lot. Enemies have very weak attack when they're in the wrong position
Awesome guide! I've already played about 10 hours of this game but just couldn't get my head wrapped around all the different concepts, so i wanted a "back to the basics" tutorial. This video clarified so many questions I had. A few days after watching I'm already completing level 3 dungeons and getting better. Ty for this guide, the explanation on the radiant difficulty alone improved my experience so much! Not overwhelming at all for a new player, enjoyed it.
This was invaluable to me going into this game. All of your information is succinct, well organized, and engaging!
WOAH! I watched the whole guide and I saw 5min, few secounds later that was the end... Nice job!
You deserve so much more recognition for the work you put into this vid, it takes real talent to make a video 48 min long AND stay enjoyable. Not a lot of people can do what you did in this video, keep it up!! earned another sub c:
Thank you! Comments like this make it worthwhile, honestly :)

Eh, I don't put out a lot of content these days, so those subs are going to the full-timers, which honestly is as it should be!
I just started playing the game on the PS4, more than one year after you uploading the video - was still really helpful for me, because I think the game can be overwhelming when you're just getting into it a bit. Figured some of the stuff out myself already, but learned a lot of other things and details from you.

I really appreciate the tips in this video, I picked up the game for the first time and didn't quite understand a few things but your well laid out video really cleared up some details.
Thanks for the helpful info.
I just picked up the Crimson Edition and man is this game unforgiving! This helps a lot, thanks.
I'd also like to add that I appreciate the many edits you put in to revise or simply inform me further. You should consider doing these more often if you feel that your personality is worth sharing (imo it is) because you certainly have the knowledge.
Thanks, that's great to hear! I'd love to do more guides like this, but I just don't have the time at the moment - maybe in the future, though :)

Great spoiler free guide. Well done on going over mechanics, whilst avoiding specific strategies. A game like this is good to play and experience 'blind'. But obscure stats being explained is always a useful thing.

Man i was looking for a good rpg yesterday. I been getting the rpg fever lately. Honestly always think i dont like turn based combat but i find myself actually loving it. There so much more u can do with turned base its alot deeper system and i realize that now. But i am in love with darkest dungeon right now just hope the grind dont get boring fast but im sure there alot to learn about all the classes, skills etc that will keep me busy
I've found that DD doesn't let you just sit back and grind, which makes sure the game doesn't get boring. I love this game
If it's not turned based, it's not a real RPG. This game is very addicting, stressful but I'm loving it!
I myself don't like turned base games as well, but this i absolutely love it.
Thank you so much for putting this together! I'm loving the game but missed out on so much. I feel much better about tackling it now!
Thanks for the guide! I came here from Christopher Odd's recommendation and it was super helpful! I think as my first rogue-like, some of these concepts were counter intuitive to me!
Very good guide! I have 97 hours in this game and still enjoyed it.
I actually was away from the game for a bit and recently came back. I was curious about your opinion on stuns. I seem to remember guides in the past strongly discouraging stuns and claiming they did not work at all in the late game. I am sure many updates have altered the prescribed strategy multiple times and wanted to ask have stuns been buffed and more viable or is this just a player's choice, topic of debate?
I am gearing for my first ever champion lvl dungeon and have no stuns in my party! Should I be worried?
Thanks! Glad the guide was useful to you :)
On the subject of stuns: I believe it used to be the case that enemy resistances outscaled your application chance to a much greater extent at high levels, so stuns were much less likely to work in Champion dungeons. This would have been a long time ago - before the Antiquarian update - but stuns are definitely worth using these days, all the way up to the Darkest Dungeon itself.
If you're going to bring a stunner, it's worth slapping a stun trinket on them - something I should have mentioned in the guide itself. With Blasphemous Vial (additional 40% stun chance), for example, the Plague Doctor is absolutely unstoppable. Even a Stun Amulet or Dazzling Charm goes a long way toward guaranteeing that stun - and reliability is key, so it's definitely worth doing.
Thanks for the quick response!
... just tried out a stun heavy party and loved it. Still haven't pulled the trigger on champion level, though... I am scared lol.
Ah, you'll be fine :) I personally think that the very first dungeons you do, before you have any upgrades or trinkets, are some of the hardest in the game. If you can make it to Week 8 in good shape, you can make it through champ dungeons!
... don't quote me on that, though.
Mission accomplished but it wasn't pretty lol. Left my first champion level dungeon with no losses, but 3 of 4 hit deaths door about 5 times a piece... then the one guy that never hit death's door hit 100 stress and failed the resolve check.... but I'm still calling it a win!
Hey man, a win's a win! Congrats!
Greetings from 2019, great guide.

thanks, it helped. even if the game got easy for me after time of playing but your guide opened my eye for new strategies and explain things I was doing wrong and now it may even make my run better.
I purchased the game a while back but could never really get into it due to feeling really lost in all the mechanics. This guide however has really made me want to learn it properly and I finally feel like I understand the game. One question though, if anyone can help me. I noticed the corpse mechanic in the game, how much of a problem is this? Or is it something I don't really need to be concerned about?
Awesome man, glad you liked the guide! The corpse mechanic is really just there to make sure you care about positioning. It's not usually worth building your party composition around clearing corpses with skills like Disorienting Blast or Purge - you'll want to hit the back lines first the majority of the time anyway, so they shouldn't be a major problem. Corpse-clearing abilities can be useful, but if you feel like you need to use them constantly it's probably indicative of other problems with your party comp.
As long as you're aware that you can't just bring two Lepers and nuke down the opposing team in rank order, the corpse mechanic has done its job.
He sounds like Bear Grylls with that accent...haha, UK.

I’m on the fence in checking this game out. Love the aesthetic and atmosphere - just seems like this game could be heavy on the micro management 😬
It is, I'm afraid! I normally hate micromanagement, but to be honest something about this game just makes it work - maybe the fact that nothing's limited by real time. It's not a "keep these six plates spinning" type of micromanagement, more a "oh, crap, I accidentally took a Cove Phobe to the Cove and now she's real pissed about it" style.
But yeah, to answer your question - whole bunch of little stuff to keep track of, I'm, afraid. Most of it's not catastrophic to mess up, but if you're not into micromanagement it can get a little frustrating.
Yewb, thanks for the insight! Another question if you don't mind: what's the save feature ( is there one?) If a player were to have a TPW, can you at least go back to your last save? Wish there was a way to test drive this game, I'm really tempted. Seems like a type of game to play during Halloween season! I guess it's only 5 bucks risk , lol

I've just got it a couple days ago, was always interested in the game but shy'd away for a long time because of it's difficulty. I'm also usually not that much into stragety but something about this game intrigued me enough to still get it.
I got the ideas from the start of the game and what it wanted me to do but after watching this video (even in 2022, it's pretty relevent for newbies) I feel way more prepared for the game. Always had problems keeping stress down, that backline tip is golden for that.
Anyways, really informative and easy to understand. Even if the calculations are a bit out of my realm for me for now, I still got the general idea on how it works :)

Stress stuck in life
I can sum up the answers to the 3 big questions for those who don't have 48 minutes to spare:
1- Because someone played Dark Souls and said to themselves "You call THIS difficult? Hold my beer."
2- Because this is real life where people die, not some fantasy game where you come back to life by a bird's feather.
3- Because after the creator play-tested his own game he said to himself, while drunk, "You call THIS difficult? Hold my beer!"
Great video! It gives me a little confidence moving forward. I used to play this game years ago on pc and I knew quite a bit. Now I've just got it again on switch so I'm relearning alot of the mechanics. This really helped out. So thank you!
Man 3 years later this guide is still helpful. Loved it so much. Thanks..

A few hours in to darkest dungeon and my biggest complaint: Why doesn’t the game tell you all this?
Game developers seem to think the discovery of mechanics is part of the 'fun'.
@@silvergreylion More like a vocal minority of players think it's fun. They bitch about games that have tutorials because "tHaT'S nOT hOw mY NiNTEnDY gAEmeS wERe LiKe 20 YeArS aGO"
Because it's actually better when a game doesn't hold your hand. This ain't Skyrim, giving you everything you need to know on a silver platter, this is Darkest Dungeon, and if that bothers you, be thankful it ain't Dwarf Fortress.
Death Incarnate that’s cool in some games but DD leaves out critical info that could make the game a lot more enjoyable
@@silvergreylion I personally enjoyed discovering the mechanics. Also, the game explains a decent amount if you hover your mouse over it.
I just started DD last week. I was confused bc of all the information and how "hard" the game, but after this tutorial, everything became so much easier. Thanks for this amazing tutorial!
Amazingly insightful guide, was ready to put down the game for a break, but now Im confident enough to pick it up again!
I'm hard of hearing, so subtitles would be very, very appreciated.

Thanks for the guide. You've got a good voice and delivery for this sort of thing.

Great guide for what is fairly complex game. Felt you were engaging and focused throughout. Well done.
This game looks absolutely amazing! Thank you for showing me everything even watching how to play was fun!
Thank you for this guide. Very much appreciated all the pointers without any spoilers.
Most helpful DD video I’ve seen yet. Thanks so much for this
Thank you, exactly what I was looking for, couldn't have wished for a better video ^^
