    Mine was the a bad solder, ground decided to unsolder itself between the RunCam split and the FC. Pretty much had to remove the VTX and the RX to then even get a glimpse of the area. Was a complete pain in the butt although I really feel good knowing this noob can troubleshoot. Getting more and more confident every day. Appreciate the work you do JB!

    I was just investigating a similar problem. I got the OSD on the screen but image was grey. After some investigation I noticed, that the flight controller was outputting 0.5V on the 5V rail. So I tested the other 5V rails and there were multiple ones too low. However I found a functioning 5V output and tried that for the camera and it immediately worked. In your case it was likely to be the flight controller as well, because a) the camera gets it's power from there (I'm assuming) and b) this noise comes from the coils when there is something wrong with the switching frequency. This noise often occurs when the switching power supply is idling (and thus turning down the pwm signal into the audible frequency) - this is also why you mostly hear smartphone chargers humming when they are left hanging on the wall without charging a phone..

    I asked you on a live streama few months back if OSD chips are interchangeable, you said yes and I've since confirmed it to be true......ordered a few blank chips and yes they work. I had a Diatone Mamba V1 on my Chameleon that lost OSD. I put in a Foxeer Razer for the OSD as opposed to swap the FC. Then the chips arrived and I changed it out on the FC......still no joy. The Razer camera accidentally shorted and went black which forced me to troubleshoot all. Found a microscop[ic solder ball on the FC. Isopropyl bath and all is well. Video, OSD, and A new Ratel.

    I had an issue with a black camera on my Eachine wizard after i re-mounted it in the quad after a hard crash. The screws I was using to mount it were just the exactly correct size to just barely touch the board inside of the camera case just slightly. What I was seeing in this case was that I would arm the quad and the camera was visible but as soon as I moved the throttle up slightly the video would go black. I discovered this by removing the screws from the camera altogether and testing again. Check the tightness of your side-mounting screws on the camera inside to make sure they are not touching the board perhaps? I even added a small strip of electrical tape inside of where those screws were to make sure they didn't touch again as well as adding a nylon washer.

      I had my wizard x220hv completely rebuilt with just the frame and motors are from the original. I'm using a newer foxeer camera and it was all fine in the past two years withstand many crashes until today I discovered one of the side mount screw was lost and the video got a bit shaky and jelly-like, so I decided to tighten the other side screw then I was getting exactly the same issue you described, the quad lifted in the mid air and screen all black. Tried best to land it and damaged a GPS module 🤷‍♂️.

  • @RandomChaos851
    @RandomChaos851 Před 7 lety +1

    I have had kind of the same problem. I had a screw barely touching the motors windings where they come out of the motor. When my top plate was mounted with the SMA connector touching the carbon, it was backfeeding the voltage from the motors into the antenna ground and wreaking all kinds of havok. Since you get a straight up black screen of death on the camera, I would check for any point that may be shorting out to the frame, and backfeeding into the antenna SMA.

  • @dexFPV
    @dexFPV Před 7 lety +14

    I know the issue! Just spent 3 hours this past weekend rebuilding the quad from the ground up to finally figure the stupid problem... Your screws are grounding with the camera! I bet if you put it back together,you will get black vid again! But if you un-screw the camera, video will come back (NTSC NOT DETECTED)! WALA! Problem SOLVED!

    • @GabrielLarke
      @GabrielLarke Před 7 lety +4

      I had the same issues with a couple Runcam Swifts. The mounting screws (the ones included with the cam) went a little too deep inside and were just barely coming into contact with the SMD caps on the edge of the board. This caused me a ton of frustration due to seemingly random camera blackouts until I discovered the source of the problem.

      For those of you reading this in the future. I also had the same exact problem. This guy is correct it is the screws. You will know it is because if you disconnect your camera and reconnect it lose it will show you video again. Then mount it and you get the blackness but still see the osd. Take out your screws filed them down with 600 sand paper, or a file. reassemble and your good to go. Thank you dex FPV.

    could always do for the old standby of a couple of chilling cycles (spray can cooler) targeted at the FC and PDB then retesting.
    if the surface mount soldering iron a component is tired and emotional this usually gets it to make itself known.

  • @castlebravo13
    @castlebravo13 Před 7 lety

    Perfect timing for this video. I ejected my Runcam Eagle while flying today and now have a black screen with working OSD. Since the crash was hard enough for the screws to take chunks out of the camera case and rip the wires out of the connector, I'm going to guess (hope) that it just broke a solder joint on the PDB and didn't kill my new camera.

  • @blurcak

    Have U the "-" pole connected to the carbon frame? There can be "transition resistance" between frame and pdb/fc when the screws are tight

    So Funny!!! I just finished fixing this same problem. Black Screen situation. And then I sit down to watch videos and this was the first one up. After trouble shooting everything, I discovered a short in the middle of a ground wire between the osd connection on the flight controller and the video transmitter. I saw a kink in the wire, and discovered no continuity in the wire, it was broke. Changed the wire and good to go.

    I had the same problem yesterday while setting up two mini quads. I am using Runcams 2, a FT951 25mW VTX and a AOMWAY 200mW VTX. While the first VTX doesn't send any voltage to a camera, the AOMWAY was sending 4.99V to the camera and nothing happened. The only way to solve this issue was to power the camera from the PDB, directly from the battery. I might have done some mistakes, I don't really know, but I spent 2 days trying to figure out what was wrong and the only working solution was this one...

    We tend to discount the idea of the camera going bad, but they can be damaged from a hard impact dispite appearing physically undamaged. When you plugged battery back in there was no camera so no/less load on inductor, then plugged camera in...
    Have you since plugged battery in with camera already plugged in yet?
    Im thinking it could be starting up with extra load on poor/dodgey/on-it's-limit inductor...
    I only ask as you didn't test again in video under 'exact' same circumstances as when fault was first happening & we all know how fickle eleaktrickery faults can be ;)
    Orr, could a weak connection somewhere induce such a noise from an inductor similar to (for example) a lose fluro tube does from its capacitor when they won't start up properly until connections are 'wriggles'?
    Sorry, you've likely covered this by now, just thinking out loud...

    I have been having this issue lately with one camera in particular. The camera was initially on one of my quads(call it X) which has a rrosd and i kept getting a black display in my goggles whereas if i connected the cam directly to a display monitor the cam would work perfectly fine. Then during a race this sunday i had to swap cameras between quad X with the cam issue to a race quad(call it Y). The cam displayed the same black screen issue on quad Y as well which has a HUBOSD on it. When i put another identical cam (i use the HS1177) on quad X i didnt notice this black screen issue anymore, hence i ruled out that the rrosd might be bad. Now coming to quad Y, i can get the image to appear by connecting and disconnecting the quad power supply 4-5 times and eventually the image pops up. Now i was skeptical to fly quad Y with such an issue but didnt notice any issue inflight (despite hitting gates etc and still the image didnt disappear ruling out a loose wiring i guess). So i think it is actually a cam issue cause it does work eventually when i plug the power in and out a couple of times till i see the image instead of a black screen. Not sure whats exactly wrong, maybe this particular camera board is more susceptible to power surge during lipo plug in on a quad due to some damaged internal component? Hope i was clear in what i was trying to say ;)

    -VIDEO + OSD overlay worked for a few seconds. Afterwards, only OSD would work (black video)
    -Plugged in/out lipo a few times. No changes.
    -Wanted to record a video for FPVMODEL's support. Video + OSD works.

    I just recently had an experience where I got a black screen, so I figured it was an issue with the camera. So I swapped the camera, and still got a black screen. So I connected the original camera directly to VTX and then the VTX wouldn't turn on unless I disconnected the camera. So I swapped the VTX and wired everything back to the flight controller and still nothing lol so again I connected the new camera to the new VTX and then it finally worked. Turns out the VTX, camera, the CamS pad and the VTX S pads on the FC all stopped working at the same time after a crash. So I had to buy an entire new video system along with a flight controller.

    My camera blacked out a few times a one quad today. Of course it never did it on the bench, only after being in the air for 30-60 seconds. I guess I'll take it apart, check solder joints, wiggle some stuff, and put it back together. And see what happens.
    I saw the comment on grounding with the screws below but my camera is mounted on small TPU parts that came with an RDQ Mach One. So I don't think that's it.

    Mounting screw shorting inside the camera causing a lot of current draw on the regulator that is powering it. When the camera was pulled out that moved it just enough to get rid to the short? At least that is what happened to me with my 1177 but in was more permanent.

    I see that your camera actually works, but every time i've had black video, it has been because of a damaged camera circuit board. If i press on the board the video will work. This usually happens after a really hard hit to the camera and nothing seems to fix it.

When i went out to fly again the next week, i noticed my goggles no longer show static, just black, i can move through the menu and everything. But when i broswer the frequencies i can only find one channel that show black with brief faint period of an image. Did i damage my goggles by removing the receivers and keeping it power? Did i over heat my goggles?

      You need to run the video wire through the FC to get OSD. The FC cannot insert OSD into the video if you bypass the FC by wiring the camera direct to the vTX.

    Hello and thank you for the video. I have a Promark Shadow gps quad and the camera is not that good. Can I replace the existing camera with a micro hd ? If so , will it be a plug and play or do I have to rewire it and supply a battery to power it. Will I keep my osd ? I have yet to check the output voltage to my Promark's camera, I can't find any specs or info on it. it will have to be small enough to replace the original camera and keep it in the housing. This would allow me to keep the tilt function of the camera. Is there is a better quality camera that would also work ? Thank you.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Před 5 lety

      If you see black screen with OSD then yeah the FC and vTX are wired correctly but the camera is not sending signal to the FC. If you tested the camera by itself then you know the camera is working. So it must be the video input on the FC that is not right. First thing I would check is, did you solder to the right pin?

    I'm having an interesting issue. I have two quads both with VKK vtx . One has run cam owl 2 the other has foxeer arrow micro v2. On one quad I can plug in either camera and it's fine. On the other quad I plug in runcam and it's good, but if I plug in foxeer, the camera has a high pitched noise and I only get black screen. I know vtx is good becuase I can see OSD. foxeer cam doens't make a high pitched noise on the other quad where it works fine. I'm scratching my head and have a run cam eagle micro on the way just because. Any suggestions?

  • @DmgNeville
    @DmgNeville Před 5 lety

    My basically new foxeer falkor had the black screen of death after the most minor crash. It was a careless mistake... I just took off and the prop hit a wooden seat for half a second before i disarmed and it only fell a foot to the ground onto grass, the prop was not even bent. In my case I have no OSD, straight black screen with no static. The VTX works because I get normal signal. All the connections seem fine and I plugged another foxeer micro camera in and it works fine. Im just stumped because it was such a minor impact and all the capacitors etc on the camera chip seem unconnected and brand new... Im guessing the prop hitting the wood vibrated the quad so hard it shook something internal on the camera chip and killed it. In my case I had a full size camera on a frame that would only just fit the camera between the two carbon mounts.
    From now on I wont be mounting cameras directly to carbon fibre via the camera screws...
    Some soft washers or something to dampen vibration/impact are going between there for sure.

  • @lukegodeassi7352

    I had a Tramp VTx that was making that high pitched humming sound and it would go away when I wiggled the ground wire, suggesting a dodgy connection to ground. Unlikely it's the VTx in this situation as it was transmitting fine, just no image from the camera. But... maybe it's a flakey ground wire between VTX and camera? Can't say I understand why a flakey wire would induce an inductor hum, but thought I'd share my only experience with that high pitched hum in case it helps.

  • @mrmega328
    @mrmega328 Před 7 lety

    How is the camera powered, 5V or Vbat through the Betaflight F3 board?
    If it was a bad 5V voltage regulator on the board (that didn't give 5V out at all), then the OSD/Betaflight board would also be affected. However if that voltage regulator was giving out less than 5V when it was making that noise, that could be a problem for the Runcam?
    See if you can measure the voltage going to the camera.
    It could be a bad connector going to the camera or cabling, try to wiggle the cable / connector around a little bit. Also you showed plugging the camera in while the quadcopter was already powered up, what if you repeat the initial problem - plug the camera in and plug in the Lipo, and repeat unplugging/plugging the Lipo a few times.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Před 4 lety

    If the camera works on the bench with 4s, its got to be worth rewiring the cam with a new cable, maybe with power direct from battery, Shame to toss a $50 cam for the sake of a $2 lead! Admittedly its hard to know where the hum was from unless it was the cams internal voltage regulator failing.... but you never know with intermittent connections.

I swapped cameras, the whine went away and all is good. just an FYI the mount holes on the BFF3 board are grounded. I think some BFF3 have issues with some cams, but that shouldn't be it.. who knows. • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Před 7 lety

      Black screen usually means the camera powered down or lost connection. The most common cause is a loose connector, broken wire, or bad solder joint. If the camera is being powered off of 5v, it could be a bad voltage regulator.

    Joshua. Me and a friend have had similar issues but different. When wired the way your supposed to the 5v to the camera seems to go low under punch outs. And cams brown out. We both have had to run raw power to the cameras and battery voltage from BFF3 to the vtx. Seems the 5v regulator to be the issue. Also the crosshair in osd won't display, maybe it's because accelerometer is off. Maybe this will help you out, you have endlessly helped me!

      Joshua Bardwell that’s exactly how I determined the problem lies with the FC. It uses a pass through function with the FC. Vtx plugs into it and then the camera plugs into it as well.
