How To Hand Pollinate Avocados For Self Fertility

- On today's 2 minute garden tip, I show you how to hand pollinate avocados for self fertility. Individual avocado trees produce male and female flowers, but they're produced at different times of day. For this reason, it's believed that a Type A avocado tree and a Type B avocado tree is required for avocado pollination, but this isn't necessarily true.
We are growing avocado trees outside of their native climate where nights are much cooler during the time avocado trees flower. This temperature change confuses the avocado tree and causes something called flower overlap. During these periods, male avocado flowers and female avocado flowers exist at the same time. You can exploit this phenomenon by hand pollinating avocado trees, which will dramatically increase avocado tree fruit set, even if you are only growing a single avocado tree!

I have a lot of friends that have one avocado tree in their yard and they’re always loaded with fruit. The trees are huge also. I live in zone 10a Southwest Florida. I was quite surprised by your video. I never knew.
A big avocado tree will likely produce a good crop on its own solely relying on wind pollination and insects. Hand pollinating will help even more for the blooms you can safely reach.

Bacon's are known to be pretty self-fertile, especially for a B type. They also make outstanding pollinators, so if you ever decide to grow an A-type, Bacon's really increase fruit set on A-type trees.
