- Special thanks to the folks out at K5PRK and K5RWK for allowing me to record and post this Ham Radio Balloon launch, which included payloads for a Ham Radio Antenna, Crossband repeater, DMR simplex repeater, LORA and APRS tracker, and a few other items.

Thanks for watching!

Heard some really cool traffic during that launch. The NASA Amateur Radio Club in Houston was a nice catch via DMR simplex repeat.
I know a couple of those guys, they are nice guys. It was good to hear them on DMR from that far away.
This is so cool to watch! It just kept getting better & better!!!!
That high altitude shot is absolutely incredible ... just wow!
Jason, the editing on this was top notch. Thanks, you did a great job on this!
Really awesome stuff. Cool seeing the HAM radios getting used in real life. But why is no one mentioning the 6M Simplex Repeater and weather station getting destroyed on a truck at 16:19?
I always thought it would be fun to launch one of those huge balloons that you see on open houses and have an antenna on it.
LOL
Very cool video. Really cool for all those who participated.
Got to be at Andrew's report out at the last DCARA club meeting. Very cool and interesting. He let us know you were documenting the event... Thank you! 73 KG5ZAY.
Man this is so awesome! It makes me want to find a club that does launches near me!
This is cool.
TeamReplay for the win! ThNHR
Great video . We did a 2m FM input and USB output on 10m single channel in 1991. Thanks ZL3MH in Christchurch New Zealand
Absolutely brilliant 😁
This is awesome !! Thank you for sharing Jason !!
My pleasure!!
That was f-ing cool!
This was a very entertaining, and interesting video. I used to live and work down in these two clubs areas, I wish I would have gotten involved while I was there.
Great movie reference!. Thanks for sharing this video. Keep up the great content!
Thanks for watching!
🎉 yeah Paul
Well edited video. Thanks
Thanks
Thanks for the video Jason.I enjoyed that :)
Glad to hear it!
Coolest video ever. Nice work gentleman! KF0DRB
Cool! Thanks for sharing! 73
Love you Jason. Have a good weekend. Wish I could go to a field day near me in WI
I wanted to go but got lazy :( I am for sure going next time thanks for recording the trip
This was great. I want to play.
That was interesting. Reminds me of the old style Radio Fox Hunt. And 300 Mile Rpt . . . can see the Weather Balloon Rpt concept being handy in getting an height advantage deploying a Rpt for Amateur Emergency Communications.
Best video you've ever done.
Thanks!
Twister, ha! Very cool project; quite the engineering accomplishment, like a small-scale NASA mission.
Thanks for sharing this Jason! -KC7QJO
You bet!
What would be good is to use a baloon with a tether for 80 to 160m antenna and to put a repeater up a few hundred feet for ecomm work.
Wow, that was/is pretty neat, I would like to physically be one of those.
20210805-Th.2015, 😎 Excellent video -- cool caravan!
"Whiskey one, this is whiskey actual. I have the bogey in sight... it is spherical in shape and emitting UHF and VHF radiation. It looks like-"
"Whiskey actual, stop doing so much target identification and shoot those 400 thousand dollar missiles already!!!!"
Lol
Damn. I'm local and missed this. Sucks for me.
Was my good friend Bob K5MVZ at that launch? His a member of that radio club. Been a long time since I have seen him. Tell him hi from Mike KT6MJ from Sacramento. Both old members of the MVRC radio club.
I don't recognize that name
What was the max altitude the balloon reached?
Was able to work the crossband repeater, but would like to get some training to be able to use the DMR radio next time.. de Tom KC5ILO
😊p yeah good
Awesome video Jason! So cool. I’m an airline pilot so naturally curious what kind notification or clearance from the FAA did they have to get? Did they have to have a transponder or location and altitude feed of some sort to ATC to keep planes clear? That would be kind of a big surprise flying past a balloon hauling a bunch of radio gear😂
If one of these ham radio balloons were to enter your high-bypass turbofan engines, they'd harmless pass through the compressor blades, burn up in the combustion chamber, as gasses flow out of the power blades.... No need to worry. Far safer than a seagull.
@@gorkushka Well, I wasn't really wondering what would happen if I ingested a rubber balloon into the engine, but rather what the notification, clearance, equipment requirements to send a big balloon hauling radio gear up into controlled airspace was. On a side note, sure, nothing would probably happen to the engine if ingesting a balloon, but what about big, heavy radio equipment hanging off the bottom of that balloon. I recently hit a medium sized bird flying out of Osaka that literally ripped the metal of 3 N1 fan blades, and bent and destroyed another 4, toasting that engine. I would guess a payload of hard radio equipment hanging off a balloon into an engine might cause some damage, no?
This was pretty cool. But, I must say, as a lineman, y'all made me nervous launching that close to a 3 phase primary line.
I just sent up a tethered antenna with a dozen 12" Hydrogen balloons.
You guys are the first I have seen use Hydrogen for lift gas out of all the videos I watch.
Wondering if you bought or made your lifting gas?
I made mine in the kitchen.
Paul🎉
Is this the launch mentioned on the TX DMR net tonight.
I could see that being used in ateas where there repeaters are completely down or no repeaters at all.
Yes
9:45 what is the dude doing with the dog??? I was just wondering if you could take a regular radio and attach a copper cable and have it take up a small (bigger than party balloon) and get hella signal if you were like out in Canada
Looks like a lot of fun. What was the total weight of the entire payload that waslifted by this baloon and how much hydrogen did you use?
How many new views have you gotten recently thanks to the story of one of the UFOs shot diwn being an amateur radio club balloon? This seems like a good idea for an event or quick emergency repeater. I'm wondering if there is a way to keep the balloon up long term about 100ft with minimal maintence for just a community? It just seems like a tower up on a hill would work lots better.
Engineering Ra2...I can put HT up with 20usd helium an patry Ballons..two HTs crosslinked.those new ones are repeaters...Ballons good for a day.wind is not..and don't forget a drone can I've seen go 7 kms high but you only allowed 150 meter high ,good for emergency valley calling..Jason could you do video on ISS repeating .I still haven't had a chat to them but would use repeater once a month.
Did you by chance get a copy of the payload list?
GoPro camera, two APRS trackers, 6m Parrot Repeater (lost on launch), DMR repeater, SSTV, FM CW Beacon, etc.
Was the weather payload riped off by the parked silver truck?
Totally twister
Near the lease? Dear, dear!
ll that guy who said 90,000 feet was 6 miles, was really wrong. he was 11 miles off. 90,000 feet is a little more than 17 miles high.
Yeah I noticed that too.
With Blue Origin’s recent launch, perhaps the 100000 kilometers being 62 miles was on his mind. 9-10k meters would be about 6 miles. Wrong system, and a decimal error, might account. I might have missed it, except I remembered calculating the Byrds “8 miles high” lyric, to being about the highest a jet-liner flies- ~42000 feet.
Is there a pdf of the technician question pool, showing only the question followed by the correct answer? Not four possible answers. I'm at the website for question pools. I'm seeing the questions and adcd answers. I can't study looking at three wrong answers and one right answer. I have a book. I was looking for a pdf
This is the epitome of anti Hollywood clichés.
Can you give me a link to the legaleze to using a balloon for an antenna? I doubt there is going to be much since I live in NW Montana but still. Thank you for any reply.
You, sir, are a legend.
