    Heard some really cool traffic during that launch. The NASA Amateur Radio Club in Houston was a nice catch via DMR simplex repeat.

    Really awesome stuff. Cool seeing the HAM radios getting used in real life. But why is no one mentioning the 6M Simplex Repeater and weather station getting destroyed on a truck at 16:19?

    I always thought it would be fun to launch one of those huge balloons that you see on open houses and have an antenna on it.

    What would be good is to use a baloon with a tether for 80 to 160m antenna and to put a repeater up a few hundred feet for ecomm work.

    Awesome video Jason! So cool. I’m an airline pilot so naturally curious what kind notification or clearance from the FAA did they have to get? Did they have to have a transponder or location and altitude feed of some sort to ATC to keep planes clear? That would be kind of a big surprise flying past a balloon hauling a bunch of radio gear😂

    • @gorkushka
      @gorkushka Před rokem

      If one of these ham radio balloons were to enter your high-bypass turbofan engines, they'd harmless pass through the compressor blades, burn up in the combustion chamber, as gasses flow out of the power blades.... No need to worry. Far safer than a seagull.

    • @bradskis81
      @bradskis81 Před rokem

      @@gorkushka Well, I wasn't really wondering what would happen if I ingested a rubber balloon into the engine, but rather what the notification, clearance, equipment requirements to send a big balloon hauling radio gear up into controlled airspace was. On a side note, sure, nothing would probably happen to the engine if ingesting a balloon, but what about big, heavy radio equipment hanging off the bottom of that balloon. I recently hit a medium sized bird flying out of Osaka that literally ripped the metal of 3 N1 fan blades, and bent and destroyed another 4, toasting that engine. I would guess a payload of hard radio equipment hanging off a balloon into an engine might cause some damage, no?

    I just sent up a tethered antenna with a dozen 12" Hydrogen balloons.
    You guys are the first I have seen use Hydrogen for lift gas out of all the videos I watch.
    Wondering if you bought or made your lifting gas?
    I made mine in the kitchen.

    9:45 what is the dude doing with the dog??? I was just wondering if you could take a regular radio and attach a copper cable and have it take up a small (bigger than party balloon) and get hella signal if you were like out in Canada

    How many new views have you gotten recently thanks to the story of one of the UFOs shot diwn being an amateur radio club balloon? This seems like a good idea for an event or quick emergency repeater. I'm wondering if there is a way to keep the balloon up long term about 100ft with minimal maintence for just a community? It just seems like a tower up on a hill would work lots better.

    Engineering Ra2...I can put HT up with 20usd helium an patry Ballons..two HTs crosslinked.those new ones are repeaters...Ballons good for a day.wind is not..and don't forget a drone can I've seen go 7 kms high but you only allowed 150 meter high ,good for emergency valley calling..Jason could you do video on ISS repeating .I still haven't had a chat to them but would use repeater once a month.

      With Blue Origin’s recent launch, perhaps the 100000 kilometers being 62 miles was on his mind. 9-10k meters would be about 6 miles. Wrong system, and a decimal error, might account. I might have missed it, except I remembered calculating the Byrds “8 miles high” lyric, to being about the highest a jet-liner flies- ~42000 feet.
