    It looks like Belushi is imitating a random samurai, but he has studied the movements and mannerisms of famous chambara actors like Toshio Mifune in Yojimbo. GENIUS.

    The way he scratches the beard with the arm pulled out of the sleeve and coming inside of his kimono is the signature move of Mifune's samurai. John must have watched Kurosawa.

      Yes, you are correct. Belushi's "Futaba" samurai character was inspired by Mifune's characters.

      Exactly! It was suggested by Kurosawa for Mifune to adopt as a habit, to have some sort of visual signature for the character. This, and the shaking with the shoulders, so the audience would recognize the main character even when faced backwards. It's a nice surprise to see Belusi doing exactly these things.

      To be honest, who watches Kurosawa films anymore.
      Though part of me wonders if it would work with Jojo Bizarre Adventure or anime today (not just offensive issue, just would be cringe-y). Same with Mikado since it was trying to ride from 19th century equivalent of Weeaboo culture.

    Still some of my favorite sketches. John Belushi really went the extra mile to get the act just right, which makes the character break at the end all the better! Him cutting his finger was pretty good too, probably unintentional but he ran with it.

    I so remember this back in 1975. Almost died laughing. Can't tell if this or the Steve martin King tut skit was the funniest. Good memories. The original cast were never duplicated. The best !!!!

    The only thing funnier than Belushi as a Samurai is Richard Pryor as a Samurai!
    God, this show used to make me howl with laughter! It’s still funny all these years later.
    Classic SNL with the original cast. The first five years were incredible! It was live comedy without a net every Saturday night and it was exciting because anything could happen.
    And the bands back then were great too! I must get the DVD box set!
