I don't know if anyone knows, but when Marius Bear got 0 points in the televote, he was really upset. Sam Ryder ran over & hugged him. They embraced for a while, then Sam kissed him, held his face & whispered something to him. Marius put his head on Sam's shoulder then kissed him on the cheek. Marius has announced on TikTok how grateful he is to Sam for taking the time & trouble to support him, saying "Eurovision provides moments like this. Sam Ryder, thank you for being the loveliest man in Space."
This is what I want to see. This is why Eurovision was created in the first place & I'm delighted that Sam is reminding the UK how to behave towards other countries. There's a horrible xenophobia over here at the mo from certain members of the media & government, & I'm fed up of it.

I'm a bit of a stats and spreadsheets geek too, so the voting is probably just as exciting for me as the songs themselves. Biggest shocks - Australia and Czechia. Totally thrilled for Serbia and Moldova (both of whom I've had in my top 10 from the beginning). Every single one of my colleagues from work who aren't die-hard ESC fans talked to me about Moldova. Seriously, along with Ukraine, i think Moldova are my favourite country in Eurovision - they always bring, always deliver always stage... Totally pleased with the end result, as commented in another video of yours. There can be no unfairness comments posted regarding UK - they did themselves proud and i agree with your sentiment that a UK-raine joint presentation next year would be perfect. The two countries have formed a really strong bond in recent times - hey, they gave the UK 12 points too...Bring it on!

Just another thought re Germany and Switzerland. 25 songs, but the juries and televotes can only award points to 10 of them.
There's that thing in the community in that it's the songs that don't really get talked about will always do the worst, rather than the divisive entries that will get top scores and bottom scores.
I'm guessing Malik was like mid-table for everyone, but not achieving a single top 10 just did him down. He could have been 11th or 12th out of 25 in every single vote but not got a single point, whereas divisive songs that many people really disliked scored higher.
Does the current voting system need to be addressed?

It's just a simple ranking list done by the greatest quantity of televotes. So the country with the most televoting in Ireland, for example, gets 12 points, second place gets 10 points etc.
then all the points that the country scored from all televoting in all countries has added together for their combined Televote score, which is what is announced.

Some takeaways: slow songs really underperformed this final in particular. The Netherlands was 2nd in their semifinal, and this time they ended up below Greece, Portugal, Norway and Moldova. Australia and Azerbaijan received terrible scores, for some of the best vocalists in the final. Australia was 2nd in their semifinal, and this time they ended up below Serbia, Estonia and Poland. I think for both it also had to do with running order, being sandwiched between favorites. Running order also killed Czech Republic and perhaps France, I expected more of those countries.
Glad Ukraine won! I agreed with all your points in the "Who will win Eurovision?" video. Afterwards some people again showed their worst side (some of the worst messages I saw said "next year's Eurovision will be held in Moscow", being disappointed is not an excuse for behaving like a horrible person). Luckily most people were good sports and were happy for Ukraine, including many residents/fans of the UK and Spain!
Those countries should be immensely proud of how far they've come. They were almost considered lost causes and they did so well. I hope they can keep up this momentum to work on a true Eurovision renaissance and hopefully in a few years they'll be lifting the trophy. Anyway, congratulations Ukraine on a very deserved victory 🇺🇦 Before the points for Ukraine were revealed I told myself "if it starts with 4 they will win" and that's exactly what happened :) Also thanks for all your coverage Tom! there is a quite clearly a pattern in lithuania receiving high televote points from norway, ireland & uk, which are also all countries that have lithuanian diaspora in them. look it up if you dont believe me.
i have literally repeatedly said in dozens of my videos that i think she is incredibly talented.

I could feel my heart break when France got eight points…
They were my second place, so I rooted for them since my favorite had already NQed.
    Hearing this was…rough.
Their performance wasn't the best and they were early in the running order, but they at least deserved mid table.
This televoting sequence kind of left a bad taste in my mouth, so many countries just died for Ukraineʼs 439 points, they deserved so much more.
It's a miracle the countries I voted for apart from France - Romania, Poland and Estonia - got out of this relatively unscathed.
I'm really happy for Spain and the UK, even though I'm not a big fan of their songs.
Maybe we'll join them next year, but I have doubts…

I find your wording " so many countries just died for Ukraineʼs 439 points" insensitive especially considering that Kalush Orchester is since today on the war front again. Who knows what will happen to them in the next months. My favorite was UK and I still think that Sam would have deserved to win but I understand that people wanted to show their support and in such times the heart has to speak.

I just burst into tears when Switzerland have 0 points. This song was so warm and well sung. The pause was so long so I thought it would be at least 90 😿

Why do you think belgium got all the points from the netherlands? If the song is not good, we don't vote. Most people in the netherlands are brutally honest. Belgium was not good.

4 of the those 5 points came from netherlands

@@ESCTom Oke. Didn't know that. Sorry. They must have liked it.👍🏻 I voted for moldova, azerbaijan, zwitserland, norway and the UK. A lot of good songs this year. I really didn't like Serbia and Italy.

LOL. I was also surprised the netherlands gave the wallone entre point. Your presentor hated our song.
We are also generous with point for each other when the song is ok. If it is bad we give 0 just like you do.

4 from Netherlands, 1 from Moldova :D. I was disappointed that the RTBF jury didn't give anything to the Netherlands... S10 was great

The hilarity of seeing you get sweatier and sweatier as the voting went on 🤣 I live for your reactions!
My nephews and nieces were pissing themselves at my reactions to the votes 🤣
They totally lost their heads at the UK coming 2nd however. For kids so young, they were so happy at Ukraine winning and they loved that Spain finished so high.
We had our own scoring system here. Marks out of 10 for the song, marks out of 10 for performance and staging.
This is what they came up with when I added all three of their scores together.

omg i remember your nieces and nephews from last year 😂
thats actually really lovely that they were happy about Ukraine being high, and not sad about UK being so close. I guess it was such a novelty from them to be able to cheer for the UK for once.
I have really fond memories of Ireland winning in the 90s, like i remember where i was for each one. but i also totally took it for granted cos we won 4 times and i was 6 years old for the first one, so i just thought we were meant to win every year 😂
haha i love those rankings. back when i was a semi hardcore fan, i used to love doing the scoresheets w friends or family 😍. they put france so high

@@ESCTom well we've learned one thing, and that is that they're a sympathetic but biased bunch who have a pathological hatred for anything Sacha Jean-Baptiste 😂
I only have two memories of Ireland winning, but i can remember Eimear Quinn (I've absolutely ruined the spelling of her name haven't I?!) Like it was yesterday. I was literally over the moon but at the same time gutted because I much preferred Gina G's song!
I hope, like you, they'll remember the night when Sam Ryder landed a silver medal position at Eurovision and I hope it stays special for them too!
