The song Uptown Funk was released in November 2014 as the first single from producer Mark Ronson’s fourth studio album, Uptown Special. It was written by Ronson, Mars and Jeff Bhasker. The song was a huge success reaching number one in 19 countries and hitting the top 10 in 15 others.
Essentially, the song is all about a person being confident in their own skin and being proud to be who they are. It is a party tune that talks about going out in your city to get your groove on and showing off your “spot”. It also carries a theme of being attractive, talented and having an exciting social life.
In the opening verse, there is a lot of cockiness to be found as Mars drops references to Michelle Pfeiffer being “that white gold” (which is a roundabout reference to cocaine). He also makes sure to drop a rap style lyric about being so hot that girls are "doing it up in a straight masterpiece."
Ronson fainted while trying to polish the guitar part during one session because the pressure surrounding "Uptown Funk" was so intense. After 82 tries, two days later in Toronto, when Ronson was performing it in front of The Hooligans, they figured out the guitar part.
The music video for the track was directed by Cameron Duddy and depicts Mars and Ronson performing in a club. It has become one of the most popular CZcams videos in history, with over 4.7 billion views as of January 2023. The song has also been featured in many TV shows including Saturday Night Live and the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
