How I Wrote That Song: Mark Ronson "Uptown Funk"
/ fallontonight - Komedie
HE'S ATTRACTIVE.
Aww man why people be saying he's so unenthusiastic!! 😝🙀 look at the man he's done so well for himself and look at his eyes to find how much passionate he is about his song that he never gave up on and was the number one song for straight four months!💕
Yup. He's a music producer, not a TRL host.
Greatest song this year amirite?
No, it's horrible
Braden Smith Gonna have to disagree with you dude. In an era of music so disconnected with it's roots from the 50s-80s, this song is a straight masterpiece.
LeprachaunLucky not horrible but not in its time. Is that fair?
I like it but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. I takes directly from multiple artists and songs, not just the eras they're in. can't help but groove to it though but that's cause it's been done before. not that there's anything wrong with that. it's undeniably catchy!
I'm it was released in 2014
Such a cool song, even my old-fashioned dad is obsessed with it :p
Well, it's a 70s style song, maybe that's why he likes it :P
Dennis k
80's style song to be correct.
70's were more Disco, 80's were more Funcky
TheNewAlexProject 70s had some of the greatest funk music. 70s is just as accurate as saying 80s.
TheNewAlexProject Funky to be correct.
TheNewAlexProject Its the other way around
I know people are saying words like unenthusiastic or depressed looking about Mark Ronson. But guys he's just a little introverted when speaking to people. He's written great music like "Valerie" featuring Amy Winehouse. I believe a lot of musicians are little introverted, but the extrovert in them shines through in the music they create. So give him a break :)
He didn't write Valerie.
That was a cover of The Zutons song.
puppygirl25 Yes, he and his sisters are extremely humble and kind of shy. Their mother is a gem. Great family ♥️
he's just being himself. he's not putting on a fake overly social personality. also his accent is pretty unique so I guess that can have an effect too
Yup. He's a music producer, not a TRL host.
"I wrote that song while in my trailer on the set of The Amazing Spider-man 2 for I am Andrew Garfield"
- Mark 'Andrew Garfield' Ronson
This song honestly has taken on a life of its' own...EPIC
Probably his best known song too. Bruno Mars is so badass with his talent, he's amazing!
Such a humble and low-key guy. A fan of him since 2003 when he came out with his single, Ooh Wee!
if you actually care and read all of this, thank you.
Ive got nothing to lose…other than a few moments of your time.
my genre is emotional, blues, soul
i believe suffering makes a person more humane
and there is no better outlet for pain than music.
very emo thing 2 say
Cupcake63931 lmao right?!
Mark, glad you were persistent in writing this song. F'ing Brilliant.
One of the best music videos around.
New favorite song. I've listened to it about 400 times last week.
Don't believe me just watch.
No replies?
If you don't like this song, you're lying.
Thats what you call perserverence. .so glad you stuck it out for us to have eargasms and foot stompings and clap smackings :-P
More of these please
You wrote that song whilst listening to "oops upside your head "
*mind blown*
My football team mate listens to it all day literly
mrcha D The title says "I wrote"... But all the time he says "we" and "Bruno".. So it seems more like team work and Bruno came up with most of the amazing beats.. So why is this guy taking the credit?
pearl Jae because most pop singers are just money making puppets for their producer overlords .
+mrcha D I'm pretty sure mark ronson is the producer on this. but Bruno is all the talent.. even in the music video you don't see mark ronson do anything but sit there and bob his head
Mark Ronson you are fantastic especially when you wrote that song uptown funk!! And others bravo
Cant wait to see more. im waiting for daffodils
I love that song!
Love the vids
His voice reminds me of Barry from big bang theory.
Bawwy.
Barry Bart Simpson.
So much negativity in the comments, but at the end of the day, everyone's still gonna, *at the very least* nod their heads to this great, catchy song.
Peeps not realising he's a music producer, not a TRL host.
Used every cliche in the book and still made a hit. Pure genius.
What do you mean "still"? Lol
I lovveee his voice.
Hes awesome I love him since Never Mind The Buzzcocks
Toronto!!
Bruno Mars is pretty much michael Jackson but younger xD
less dead too
^ that doe XD
Kady Don't forget less creepy and pedophilic...
Drew Gaughan lol! Right, of course! Good ol' Bru Bru
Bruno Mars is the perfect hybrid of MJ and Prince.
I love catchy song!
Love the song. It's my favorite song right now. I was surprised to learn that they were British because his sister, Samantha, doesn't have a British accent. I had never heard Mark Ronson speak until now. He has a slight British accent, not Simon Cowell accent, but not fake Madonna either. You can tell he's spent a lot of time in the states.
Good song.
Good stuff. :)
I've watched quite a few interviews with Mark Ronson. He's a very talented, successful, smart and good-looking guy, but he never seems happy to me. There's always something lacking about him.
I agree, it's weird.
maybe its drugs? lol
may be it's a combination of british reservedness, introvertness and he feels awkward in front of the camera. That's ok, not all creative people have to be extrovert.
Have you ever seen interviews with his sisters? (Charlotte Ronson & Samantha Ronson). They’re all very sweet, very humble, a tad bit shy, and EXTREMELY talented.
It might come across as dissatisfaction or lacking enthusiasm but it’s not. They’re amazingly talented and passionate artists and don’t feel the need to be braggadocious about it.
Check out the videos Charlotte did with their Mum. She’s a great lady! It gives some insight into their early family life and upbringing. Cheers ☺️
@Veerle-to add to what you said, not only just creative types, but people in general are not all extroverted. And even extroversion/introversion are not always black/white either. I’ve also seen a few interviews and I pick up on some possible workaholism/perfectionistic tendencies (sometimes abused as a distraction from other areas in personal life. Can’t say for certain if this applies to him, though) as well as a touch of introversion/anxiety. Creative exhaustion, unless you’re a creative type, is somewhat difficult to explain to a non-creative.
Not everyone is comfortable being outwardly overly emotional across the board, especially in public-and for sensitive types (which I believe him to be) it’s that much more vulnerable. Could be genetics at play, too. There’s most likely someone similar disposition wise in his bloodline. Although, maybe not! My family is all very outgoing and charming and I’m the black sheep-I came out of nowhere, so I very much know the whole “everyone who’s not an extrovert is confusing to me” schtick. I know some people (😏) that just generally unwind mostly around their nearest/dearest.
Yas
My dad normally does not like songs like that but he is addicted to this song
HOT DAMN!
I looked at the thumbnail and title of this video and thought this guy was Ted Mosby
It takes so much from all gold everything by Trinidad James. Wow didn't even mention that in the creative process.
It takes stuff from Stevie wonder
This song is just like "All gold everything by trinidad james" just that with more melody. I mean even the lyrics are from that song.
Trinidad James is also one of the writers; he (James) actually released a remix of Uptown Funk. Here's how Uptown Funk started:

Like it? we fucking LOVE it. Bring the funk back and the REAL instruments
i fucking love that song, and it's my ringtone
very very interesting
Like it i LOVE IT #UPTOWNFUNKYAUP
He should have mentioned all the artists who made real funk from the 70s and 80s, (Ex, James Brown, P-Funk, Zapp, Sly and of course Morris Day and the Time AKA Prince AKA Minneapolis Sound...) those are the people that they pretty much got their inspiration from...
But for those who haven't heard the ol' school funk from back in the day. Look up musicians like Parliament-Funkedelic, of course look up James Brown, look up Sly and the Family Stone, and of course look up some Prince (or Morris Day). And for more, just Google these kinds of artists, the list goes on and on...
I'll be very surprised if that song doesn't take home a grammy next year
He's making music with Lady Gaga now. Can't wait!
he looks like Charlie Puth
Mixed with charlie sheen
Oh I am not alone!!
He did make a great song with Bruno Mars
Time travel is real...For music anyway. This song got lost in the late 70's/early 80's and somehow found its way to 2014/2015. Its like a classic that we've been listening to all of our lives. Isn't interesting a sound like this could trump all the other music that sounds nothing like it?!
What is the original song they used ?
Sarai Garcia It's completely original as far as I know. I'm just saying it's an anomaly for it to sound like a classic song and be popular in this time.
Roger Troutman and Zapp provided the music for Uptown Funk. Go back and listen.
Seems like it should be called "How mostly Bruno and Geoff wrote that song".
Alien Or Sutin Yep. Listen to a concert where Bruno practically sang that song. www.dailymotion.com/video/x1bt6qp_mash-up-celebration-los-angeles-ca_webcam
LOVE Mark Ronson, British legend! Everyone will always love him but GOD, he's got the personality of a piece of cardboard.
He's introverted.
Ermm... He's a music producer, not a TRL host.
Awesome song. It reminds me of James Brown.
For the people who says that this is a direct rip of of 'all gold everything' it definitely shares SOME lyrics, and SOME melody, except that Uptown Funk is actually good with a lot of actual musical talent on stage.
Listen to Trinidad, then listen to Uptown Funk. That's the difference when you put people with actual musical talent together vs someone that the music industry pumped out to you like they do every day.
When Uptown Funk came out, Trininad James was promoting it on twitter. In addition, when it went No. 1, Bruno congratulated James along with the other producers. I'm sure James is somehow involved in the creation of the song and is being compensated.
GOOD im tired of ppl sayin its brunos song, its not lol
See, I wanna know what was the inspiration for the song? EW&F, The Time, Chaka Kahn... Who dey bit it from?
www.dailymotion.com/video/x1bt6qp_mash-up-celebration-los-angeles-ca_webcam
Can't tell if he English or American
+Dezeáy L. i think he's Canadian lol
+Uzi he's English
English but moved to NY when he was 8
surprised he didn't mention that almost every vocal element was based on "all gold everything" by trinidad james
Eh, it's just "Don't believe me just watch" line, not all "vocal element" whatever that supposed to mean. Trinidad James got writing credit and registered on ASCAP, so he got royalty checks from them. Bruno even gave a shout out to Mr. James when the song hit #1 on US chart.
I heard a mash-up of both songs and thought it was a little more than coincidence. Thanks for the lesson.
I should've been more clear that I'm not saying it's a rip off: it's not. It's definitely a legal, cleared interpolation and James is making good money off it. But it's still a huge part of the song, so I'm just surprised he didn't say "We had heard that Trinidad Jame$ song and we took inspiration from that for the vocal melodies" or something of that nature.
jasonmoriparty
Well, Mark Ronson just told how it started after he was involved. Like he said, it was originally from a jam that Bruno did with his band on his show. Bruno did a mash-up of his own song with James Brown's Sex Machine and Trinidad James' All Gold Everything on his concert. Too bad the videos had been taken down after Bruno decided to record Uptown Funk with Mark. So maybe that's why he didn't mention Mr. James, because he didn't inspired by Mr. James, Bruno was.
Ita Purwati
Great response, didn't know that part of the song's history. Thanks for that! Monster song, it's hard to believe there was any doubt that the song was a hit from the start!
No love for Trinidad James? Don't believe me just watch!
Nice purse.
Although that hair style is in, it's one of those styles that you will see a picture 20 years from now and ask yourself, "what the hell was I thinking? "
TheQuestionOfToday: Is Mark Ronson stoned??
Can this guy be any more unenthusiastic?
Probably why Bruno is the front man (especially in the video), he's the extrovert.
aprilmay90585 Yeah. Bruno has personality.
Do you have to criticize every video possibly made?
Annie A Do you have to be such a little baby?
Says you
:-)
Mark Ronson is a creative man. But he is an introspect guy. Don't believe me, just watch! Haha
Personality of a brick wall
Oh the song that totally rips the sound of Morris Day and the time..oh ok. .
I never thought I would say that The Time + Trinidad James would equal a hit record. Who'da thunk?
Lousson2695 it's just 5 words from Trinidad...it's not like he's actually on the song. I doubt any song that has him as a feature would be a true hit haha
who did MD "rip"?
they meaning MR ripped there sound from Morris Day...reread it please
Morris Day & The Time AKA Prince AKA Minneapolis Sound
Coped trinidad james
I thought he's british?? He doesnt sound like one
its literally the best fucking song ever

Love the song .... Hate the song credit.... Mark Ronson? Really? Where the hell is your voice in the entire Damn song?
He made this song, but he's not a singer okay?
you dont have to sing in a song to be credited for it lmao. i think he wrote the lyrics and put the beat together and the others just sang it. same situation with some of calvin harris' songs.
How high is this guy ?
I don't mean to be rude but does he have an accent or a speech impediment?
Was he high?
These producers who can't sing or perform but at the same time so full of themselves....wants the credit so much, they'll eat poop for it
yes BLACK MUSIC LIKE THAT SOUND FAMILIAR MMMMMMMMMMMMM THOSE FUNKS OF 1970 80S MMM WHITE MAN I HEAR YOU MMMMMMMMMMMM ???????????????????????????????????????????
He seems depressive.
this is a total lie there was a funk saxophone instrumental jingle on the NBA. and his song is an only cover of it.
If I'm honest it sounds like a rip off of Jungle with the synth breakdown...
It was not him who wrote the song, he had no choice but to say that he wrote it cause it is impossible for him to tell people that someone else wrote it who was spiritually connected with the person who wrote it. I also don't know how to say this, but it was me who wrote it. That is why it is impossible for him to say that other people wrote it, he has to say that he wrote it cause it would seem unreal and delusionary.
Are u ok
yes, I'm okay. But I was really the one who created the music and the music video. I created almost all the music and the music videos. Like really. (There is a certain kind of evil that everybody should know. Not doing enough for someone or anybody is evil. There is always evil present because only if there is a highest love for someone then evil will be slowly canceled out. Highest love cannot be reach so do the most you can do for someone because it will cancel more evil.(This is what I think) ).You must know that it was me who made almost all the music videos. Nobody will believe me . I think it was because of my trust and believe in Jesus and God that is how this music video got made. Idk .
Believe in Jesus Chirst and make him your only Lord and saviour.
I know how you feel, I wrote most of the songs for Queen... Yet I get no recognition. Fucked up world
Mark is pretty cool. This song though, I really really detest it. With a massive passion. It comes across like an over hyped fake horrible 'feel good' urrgghhhhhh.... its bloody awful
+Cheryl Cold well, that escalated quickly...
Tell the truth. They got this from Prince.
Is he drunk?
So in other words, Mark didn't write anything......
Ummm how bout the truth....we bit off of 80s artist style and song composition gap band "oops up side your head" morris day and the time "cool" James browns horns sections and prince funk guitar... i could go on ... Lame ...nothing about the song is iconic or original its capitalization on the youths ignorance of the originators... Point blank period. Its lazy is what it is
www.dailymotion.com/video/x1bt6qp_mash-up-celebration-los-angeles-ca_webcam
He skips the part where he stole it.
All he did was take the song pattern from "All Gold Everything" Change the lyrics, add the horns and speed it up
He's trying too hard to hide that English accent. Pity.
Rip off...
It is not a original song from my point of view, but a shameful plagiarism of Chic- Le Freak and other disco songs. I though you were an original instrumentalist/musician Mr. Ronson...
That song is honestly trash why is it gaining so much popularity
