- In September last year, Elon Musk refused to let the Ukrainian military use his Starlink satellites to attack a Russian fleet.
Musk jumped on Twitter and posted "Starlink is meant for peaceful use only".
So how did we get into a situation where Elon Musk gets to personally decide whether a Ukrainian military operation succeeds or fails?
And was he justified in refusing to help?

Comments allowed on an ABC story, how refreshing!
Comments are allowed on all videos on the ABC In-Depth channel to my knowledge
the always allow them on these kinds of videos. general news clips they don't. they've done that (as many other news outlets have done) since the laws changed to make them responsible for the comments people make on their videos, and they don't have a big enough moderating team to be across all the videos that go up. Liberals brought that in a couple of years ago.

US was supplying China with squadrons of air craft that flew missions against japan for nearly a year before Pearl Harbor. (told by actual pilots and ground crew mostly from March AFB area)
StarLink is obligated to follow the US sanctions against Russia/Crimea, this includes the satellite comms blackout.

Starlink is a private company? Using their infrastructure for war goes against Star-link’s terms and conditions. A private company can choose not to have their services used for war. It’s that simple…
No, it is not that simple. Russia has defied the international community, the international concept of law, by invading a neighboring country. Russia invaded because Putin wants to re-constitute the Russian Empire. He denies that the Ukrainians are a sovereign people. Putin denies that the Urkainians are a people. He is a racist. Putin denies that Ukraine is a sovereign country. He says that Ukraine is really Russia. The Ukrainians are fighting for their survival, literally. I suggest your read about the Nuhremburg Trial.

This is not even an intelligent question. As a US citizen, he had an obligation to obey US law. US sanctions prevented him from providing service too Crimea. It is also illegal for a private US citizen to participate in a major act of war that could start WW III. That is supposed to be the responsibility of congress. The president is not supposed to start wars on his own. Musk certainly isn't. Russia would be able to tell if Musk had taken part in a Peal Harbor like attack on its Black Sea fleet and would likely retaliate against Musk's facilities and ,possibly, US forces. It was both unlawful and immoral for Musk to do this. Biden needs congressional approval to commit an act of war against Russia unless Russia attacks the US.
It’s not an act of war, it’s enabling Ukraine to retake its occupied territories. It’s no different than supplying arms and ammo. His decision allowed the fleet to engage Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and facilities like hospitals with impunity. Disabling or sinking the BSF would’ve ended the war quickly because Putin would’ve likely been ousted and Crimea retaken

If Ukraine government asked US government to lift off the ban on starlink operating on the area then MUSK would have been forced to do so.

If as you say Musk's system does not work in Russia,
and that is even part of US sanctions,
then he was being asked to change that policy.

He was asked to break sanctions and US law.
No one would consider it without signed orders from high up at a Whitehouse or Joint Chiefs level, which would take too much time to facilitate the attack.
The attack was poorly planned and had zero hope from the start.

United States had imposed sanctions on Russia, which Musk says includes Crimea, so the company was not allowed to provide connectivity services to a sanctioned country without the U.S. government approval.

He did help Ukraine in the beginning but he didn’t do it for charity. He marketed his satellites to US DOD, remember russians were jamming all signals and nothing worked there, he secured the bag on much larger contracts following this situation.
Now think about this: US provided Ukraine with ~ 24 Patriot systems. They said it’s plenty to cover the whole country. ==> EU countries watching success of the system, Poland orders 400 units . 400 units for Poland which is 30% territory size of Ukraine. And guess who will sell and manufacture these systems.
In the end anything US does to support Ukraine in it’s defense against Russian tyranny will yield more success for US. Wish more folks would understand that.

Ukraine is not attacking Russia in any way or capacity. It is self-defence.
Incorrect. You might do it in the form of self-defence but the opposing side will still treat that as an attack.
If Al Qaeda or Iraq attacked USA when they illegally invaded Afghanistan/Iraq, USA would still classify that as an attack (most likely it would be classified as a terrorist attack) - even if they said ‘well we did it in self defence!’

Actually Western initiated sanctions against corporations operating in Russia stopped Musks system from working in Crimea, and only an exemption could allow Musk to turn it on in Crimea,which he didnt have.

If he gave them access, he would have inadvertently violated US sanctions. Executive order 13685 section 1 (iii) the exportation of services to the Crimea region.
Perhaps the government would have turned a blind eye to this, but I’m certain they’d use that violation as leverage in the future.

The "Crimea region" is the Russian occupied Crimea. The US sanctions does not apply to Ukraine, the rightful and legitimate owner of Crimea.
Note also that Russians were using Star link service also.

In my opinion this video is some good reporting which reports on both sides of the argument. However there are a lot of videos with comments disabled which just tell you one side of the story that are clearly pushing some idea.

you are incorrect. the laws changed under the liberals a couple of years back that make abc (and anyone else posting videos to their own channels) responsible for the comments on the videos. Their moderating team isn't big enough to be 100% across all their videos, so general news stories have comments disabled, but they keep them open on most of the videos from their "in depth" series of videos. It's got nothing to do with what they say in the videos, and everything to do with being responsible for whatever you comment on them. This is the outcome from the law changes they made after the libs got all butt-hurt about things people were saying on social media platforms. abc are just living within those laws now. @@drawingofwario9402

This is where this gets murky because Musk gets virtually ALL of his funding from the government and so with Military, National security and such rare issues in mind should comply or get his pork barrel, corporate welfare cut off. Eukrane didn't ask musk if they could use his public com satellites as military sats. That's not what he made them for. Ukraine's bad. All on them. Musk didn't stop them from attacking Russia, just said can't use my civilian sats. His right totally.

He says it's because of the nuclear threat, so let's see his stance on Israel-Iran.
He could have just stayed neutral and left Starlink out over the whole country, his system is beyond vital for the Ukrainian war effort and it is denied to the Russian side what he was asked to do was effectively pull the trigger on a major attack to actively facilitate and by so doing participate in it. Ukraine should have done its homework and given him some cover by at least going through government channels by bad-mouthing him they risked losing his system, there is no doubt he doesn't believe in Project Ukraine.

Poorly researched article. No mention at all of the “geo-fencing” of Crimea agreed upon between Musk and Ukrainian government. He also said that we know this sort of attack would not lead to escalation because it has not happened since. Well how was Musk supposed to know at the time. And yes, Crimea has been part of Russia for several hundred years. In fact there was a war in the 18th century called the Crimean War.

A couple of things, firstly Starlink is heavily subsidised by the US government and would otherwise be unprofitable. Secondly, this is an example of the importance of critical infrastructure being in the hands of government. Thirdly, whether you agree with Musk's reasoning or not, there is a clear question of legitimacy here. Is it appropriate for a single billionaire to make foreign policy decisions and withhold critical infrastructure from an ally? Are we comfortable outsourcing these sorts of decisions to unelected billionaires?

The problem is that the image of one business interferes in the others. I for an instance gave a very hard pass on a Tesla choosing any other brand for my electric car.
In Australia the Starlink will be very useful in the outback. As we have plenty of sun and solar panels, Teslas are popular too!
Just make sure you choose a brand of EV that can use the Tesla chargers, other chargers are slow and often broken....

A country should rely on its own forces in a conflict and not feel entitled for anything, if it can't do so it should adjust its foreigh policy accordingly not to get into conflict.

Want to point out something that isn’t obvious.
The minute a civilian spots a military target, and reports it - they instantly become a military target under the rules of engagement, which classifies that person as a spotter. This is standard across all militaries. The fact that the Ukrainian government encouraged civilians to do this is extremely irresponsible regardless of what was happening, as it puts people in an extremely dangerous situation without realising it.
They didn't have a choice. They were flying blind while under attack.
Yes, civilians risked their lives, but they saved many more in doing so, and I'm pretty sure they did it wilfully and with honour.

depends on who is invading, the russians arnt ww2 versions of german or japan. ukrainieas are dying for massive generational debt and destruction of everything for no real return, there leader should have surrendered. Rather they should sign a peace treaty to atleast maintain status quo. Because selfish people like you think about winning and losing wars. Its a game for you, but it is sad and saving lives is most important. When my country was invaded (in which the West sided with the invaders btw due to their selfish motive), that is what we did. Because saving civilian lives is of utmost important. But for people like u war is a football match. Sad.

What you said makes absolutely no sense. It is Ukraine's choice to fight against what is a clear violation of international law.
If you prefer to let bullies get away with murder, then that is your choice, but you set the bar very low for someone preaching moral superiority. Your solution is to do nothing so as to save yourself. What's happens when the next bully wishes to take what is not theirs?
Modern international law is certainly not perfect, especially when countries pick and choose which laws suit them, but the ways of ancient or colonial times, when might was right, should not be accepted.

If a soldier uses his mobile phone with google maps to locate a target, it's simply not Musk's responsibility, nor special interest. Military use of civilian services for their operations is nothing new. It's in fact common place in all wars.
