I remember seeing this back in August of 1983. The moment Vader grabbed the Emperor, the audience started going nuts. For any kids who grew up with a father with an addiction, this scene gets more poingnant over time. We all wished our true dads made the same choice as Vader and threw their Emporer into a chasm. Yes, it was shockingly scary. Vader had a boss who was stronger than him. The lightning was astonishing. I was 9.

Palpatine was always my favorite character. As a kid I found it really cool he was able to shoot lightning.
Up until this moment, no one knew that the Force was capable of something this raw and sorcerous -- it had always been an invisible, subtle thing: it moved objects, allowed for precognition, telepathy. Here, it was pure, blunt, brute, Dark Magic.
Anakin still sticks with his own philosophy seen in the prequels here, his fear of losing a loved one is so big that he would do anything to stop the people he loves from dying, after Padme died he tought he had no one left in the universe, thus making him fully convert into Vader, remember he thinks Obi-Wan is a traitor and he fears Palpatine, but never truly likes him, but when he met Luke, the whole sentiment he had for his loved ones back in the prequels kicked right in, and he finally realised that Palpatine was the true menace that was trying to kill his family, and he finally realized he was wrong this whole time, and died as Anakin regretting every single choice he made as Vader
He had too much attachment as a Jedi and too much love and remorse in his heart to be a Sith. 24 years under an evil empire gives you alot of time to think about the why you got ther in the first place.Anakin/Vader was conflicted but he was never truly evil his one and true happiness came from his loved ones. I could only imagine what it would have been like to be a kid during these movies. The hero you've grown to admire is completely defenseless and suffering and he's alone. You try imagining ways he'll get out because the hero always wins, but there's only him and two really evil bad guys in the room and his friends aren't even on the same ship. And then suddenly the imposing villain of three movies that scared you whenever he came on screen saves your hero. And now you have to work out what happened and maybe you start to believe there can still be good in bad people like Luke did.
Me and other kids my age (roughly 8) wanted to be Luke… there is no modern day equivalent I think. Cheers

I was 14 when this came out. I was 8 when the first movie released. Luke was my hero. After everything that he went through, to have his father come back from the dark side to save him was almost as cathartic as Vader revealing his parentage.
I saw Return of the Jedi in theaters when I was 5. One of the best movie experiences I've ever had. The whole movie blew my little mind. I was obsessed with Wickett for a few years, even named my dog after him 😂
@@jonnyfevertv3170 Yeah im a Young Adult now and I can't really find anybody that stands out, but I think that's okay, Star Wars is amazing, and I enjoy it every year with my Dad who grew up with it, but in current day media I think things start to lean towards creating your own person within fictional universes instead of embodying a specific character. Take the Spiderverse movies, they are amazing movies that should be considered art and you see people creating their own spiderman with a unique twist that represents them.
Despite this though (in terms of star wars), I think a lot of people from my generation look up to Hayden Cristensen and Ewen McGregor as they were like our 'Luke and Vader' growing up, (and Hayden literally plays Anakin/Vader really well).
Also screw the sequels, they do not compare at all to the OG or even the prequels in terms of storytelling (prequels got weird with CGI but they got better in the 2nd and 3rd installments haha)

I don't think any scene ever distressed me more as a kid than seeing lighting tickling Luke's teeth and hearing the hero scream in unimaginable pain. It's so unique to have the climax be a fight that the "main character" can't win. But I guess that's why it's Anakin's story.
I mean Star Wars takes multiple really cool approaches to endings. Revenge of the Sith was another awesome idea where not only do the good guys “lose,” but they also get massacred as we see our favorite characters either die or have everything taken from them. And it’s not even like Infinity War where everyone comes back to life later; in ROTS, everyone stayed dead and were only avenged about 30 years later.
@@SJ-di5zu Yeah RotS did Infinity War's finale way earlier, but stronger too. Infinity War having a few years of bad and then everyone's alive again vs RotS where everyone dies and the galaxy is plunged into darkness for 20+ years.

I saw ROTJ in a sold out theater on opening day with my dad in 1983 at 9 years old and this scene is burned into my brain. To this day that Vader turn was the biggest pop I've ever witnessed by an audience in my life. The crowd erupted.
Amazing acting by Dave Prowse. People forget Darth Vader is not just Jones's voice, but the conflict inside a pained father who devoted his entire life to an evil emperor finally choosing to make the ultimate sacrifice is depicted beautifully without a single word here.
And that’s why I love this scene and hate the 2011 Special Edition for ROTJ specifically. This scene is phenomenal as it is and adding lines for Vader ruins it.
@guyledouche5812 That's kinda what they did, isn't it? Most of ROTJ was Sebastian Shaw
Was just thinking the same thing, there's something very evocative about the way he looks to Palpatine and back, you really get a sense of his turmoil.
BUT, fact fans, that's also our brains filling in the blanks by way of something known in film theory as the Kuleshov Effect. Look it up. It's a sad moment, so Vader's mask, to us, suddenly looks and feels sad despite being the same as it has ever been.
@guyledouche5812 any proof at all? a single bit of truth there?
As this was a stunt, don't be certain that was David prowse.
Yup, I remember seeing Return of the Jedi in the theaters when it first came out. We'd heard ALL ABOUT the Emperor in the previous movies, but THIS was the first time we ever witnessed just how much power he had. It was terrifying to see.

Thank you for uploading this clip. I wasn't born yet in 1983 but I'll never forget the emotions while watching this scene for the first time. In the action movies there's usually the fight between the good guy(s) and the bad guy(s) at the end. This was the first time when I saw the good guy refusing to fight. It was something completely new for me. I was shocked and legit afraid Luke would die, that was something I had never felt before about any other protagonist. Vader's sacrifice was another thing I didn't see coming. It was a huge surprise, but what an amazing one! I was so used to seeing happy endings in other movies, that I was in complete awe of this beautiful bittersweet ending. Return of the Jedi is my favorite Star Wars movie, no other movie made me so emotional.
Because of how wide spread it's now become, it's amazing to think of these as new movies people went to see and didn't know any of the twists! Of course it seems predictable now watching it, but it's incredible hearing people gasp as Luke is electrocuted, the audience believing his life could be taken!
They had also never seen force lightning!!
This is exactly why I think Episode 1 was a great movie. In retrospect it's not the best. But at the time, when this was the last thing Star Wars anyone saw, it was actually a great film.
Back in _TESB,_ the moment Yoda mentioned that "There is another," a lot of people probably got filled with dread upon realizing that Luke just lost his plot armor. This is where that feeling in the back of their heads comes forward.
Am i missing something? Yall know this is fake reactions right?.. you can clearly hear the scene from scary movie where the girl is told to shut the hell up before getting stab. Like I said im not trying to be rude.. just wondering if im being ricked rolled into believing that everyone here thinks this is authentic lol
We had no idea how it would end. It was not outside the realm of possibility that Luke would be killed, or Vader by Luke. I know I never imagined it would end like this, the best way possible.
You know, you have to imagine what's going through the audience's mind at this very moment in time. Up until then, we hadn't really seen the Emperor or even knew how powerful he was. Hell, we didn't even know force lightning was a thing until VI. The audible gasps give an indication of the shock many must have felt in the moment, and the crying and the screams of terror of what's unfolding before them - _Will Luke die?? Is Vadar gonna let this happen??_ It's impactful moments like these that really make a film memorable and/or good. And then the clapping at the end when Vadar, at the cost of his life, picks up Palpatine and throws him off the balcony - they're rooting for the now-redeemed villain.
Truly, Star Wars was something else.
Yea, it's amazing to see what their utter shock was like. This was probably the biggest what the fuck moment in cinema history other than the "no, I am your father" line.
Star Wars Disney is 💩
Force was not so forceful in that period 😁Biggest trick was tossing things around, rest was the lightsaber combat and Emperor did not have any. We all expected he would do something, but no one expected he would totally overpower Luke. Luke was built up by Episode VI, and he was shown to be powerful Jedi, seconds before beating Vader. Thus him being on the floor, helpless, pleading his father to help him (father whom he just humiliated ), made enormous contrast and impact on audience.
@@aleksazunjic9672 The Emperor was very skilled in lightsaber combat, it's just in the original trilogy according to the later canon, he thought lightsaber combat to either be barbarous or that he just wanted to conceal himself as a Sith Lord to the galaxy population. The only Jedi that put up a fight against Sidious were Mace Windu, and Yoda. Had Vader not burned on Mustafar and put into a life support suit, Vader could've put up a fight against Sidious as well.
The broader population never really saw Palpatine after the Empire was founded. They were aware of his rule, but never really saw him. Like did the Empire really put up propaganda posters on buildings with Darth Vader or himself on them? Not any that I saw. He became recluse and studied the dark side in secret which only Darth Vader really knew.
@@GothRailfan Dude, nobody knew that when RotJ was screened. It was retconned later. All that audience knew he was Vader's boss, and supposedly very powerful in the Force. Force Lightning was never hinted, Jedi were shown to move things around with the Force and that was it. In combat they used lightsabers. Yoda also did not have one, but he was shown as hermit, sort of old monk- sensei known from eastern marshal arts movies. Audience expect showdown between Luke and Emperor, with Vader perhaps joining on either side. No one expect Emperor to be typical glass cannon.

Wow that's cool that u have this recording still 39 years later
its fake i think
@@raspurity Not everything is fake dude...people had cameras in the eighties
@@aeyes1314 no it’s literally the movie theatre scene from scary movie
@@raspurity Any proof it's fake? I mean it could be, but it sounds genuine. And it isn't a stretch by any means that someone recorded this in 1983. The technology was there for it, and the movie was one of the biggest releases of all time lol.
Wow that’s embarrassing that you actually think this is really from the 80’s
1:52 "ambatukammm ohh" LOL HOW ARE PEOPLE BELIEVING IN THIS
I've watched a bunch of these classic audience reaction videos over the years and never been *entirely* convinced they're not fake.
When I first saw it in 1983, this was the exact reaction in the movie theater. The audience was so loud (cheering) that you couldn't even hear the movie anymore. Oh the memories!
did they stab someone to death too?
@@youhavenoprivacyandownnoth8289 Er... no
This was the real death of the Emperor. Rise of Skywalker means nothing.
Means absolutely nothing, no when can ever say it does!
sequels are just trash with cheap stories. nothing less nothing more
Rise of Skywalker was dogshit
still canon
May the force be with you! always
I can't imagine how it must've felt like to witness the Emperor finally use his force powers on film for the first time. I bet no one was expecting literal lightning to come out of his hands.
I love that this clip exists from back then. One of the greatest end scenes of all time
39 years later... this still gives me goosebumps
I was five years old when I saw this in 1983 and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time during this scene. Even at that young of an age I clearly understand how conflicted Vader was without him having to yell "NOOOOOO!!!"
THANK YOU !
So totally agree!!! I was same age five and I feel that Vader in this original cut was more effective without yelling NOOOOO it was more impactful to see his emotions raging with body language and slowly looking at Palpatine then look then suddenly quickly looking at Palpatine and then picking him up and throwing him overboard.
I got the special edition rotj (released before Lucas made the prequels) transferred to dvd and that's what I watch to this day; it's got no silly Vader's "No!" or Hayden Christensen's Anakin ghost at the end, nor the awful cgi of pulling down the Emperor's statue.
Still one the most intense scene ever.
I’m crying watching this the fans reaction shows it all
You are crying to a fake fan reaction video
Sorry to burst it...
“ambatukaaam ohhhh" -emperor palpatine’s last words
This makes me cry every time - excellent scene! In the end, Vader loves his son so much that he cannot withstand his suffering and agony... being a parent is a much more powerful emotion than serving the Dark Side and living as a puppet of a twisted Emperor. One of the best scenes invented in Sci-Fi cinema.
This is magical, to go back in time and experience people's raw reactions to something that become something we all knew by heart decades later. People know how these movies go beat-for-beat now long before they see them.
this can't be real lol, the dude yelling "let's goooooooo" gives it away lol.
it’s prob fake but idk ppl prob used to say that maybe 🤷♂️🤷♂️
I wish I could have been there in theaters to watch it with everyone for the first time. I would have teared up on the spot when he lifted Palpatine with everyone cheering on like that. I'm even tearing up right now watching the crowd reaction even after having watched the film a million times. The energy of an audience makes a huge difference.
No doubt!
That was one of my most memorable moments. I was 10.
It really does. I wish we could still do this.
Same tbh, though the only problem was I wasn't alive then
This might be one of the coolest reaction videos I’ve ever seen
It's fake jit
@@rodclarke8957 What? Ian is the only person who has played the Emperor in live action except for the one person who played him in ESB. Ian has always played Palpatine in ROTJ even in the theater release…
@@rodclarke8957 np
Watch the audience reaction to Vader revealing himself as Luke's father. It is a cool reaction from the audience.
@@GoogleUser-sk5tn bro it’s fake
I saw it on opening night. I was 7 years old. The reactions were similar as I recall.
this guy got better cam quality in 1983 than most cam quality torrents online these days
Minus that it wasn't recorded in 1983

That audio? Yeah, scary movie (2000)
1:52 Palpatine's last words before he died "Ambatukam ohh" really hit hard :(
It's actually "anakin noo"
@@darklordvader66 no it's actually
I'm about to c*m

He's crying out for his secret bodyguard, "Ambutakm Omaygot", who was the only person he trusted implicitly. This is definitely the scene of all time 😭😭😭
🤣😂
"Am bout to Kam Ohhhh"
Truly a momentous, historical moment. My favorite part was when Darth Vader said “Ambotukam ohhhh”. Whenever I think about this moment, I can’t help myself from falling to the ground in tears. George Lucas‘s literary genius is amazing.
I HEARD IT TOO LMAO AT THE END
I was about to comment and then I saw this😭
I didn't hear it, do you have a timestamp?
@@skyraider871:52, makes me tear up every time.
What does it mean?
Everyone thinking this is real obviously didnt hear the "Amboutakam" at 1:52
the way this scene still makes me cry, decades later
1:50 the "f*ck" absolutely killed me😂
I saw ROTJ when it came out. My uncle took me as an early birthday present. The audience reaction was much the same. People cried when Luke removed Vader/Anakin's mask and even more when he died. Grown men, women and children. I'll never forget it.
I think that we get a greater appreciation of Anakin's motivation for his rescue of Like here in Return of the Jedi after we also watched Anakin in the Prequels. In Attack of the Clones, Anakin received visions of his mother dying and not being there to save her, and in Revenge of the Sith he foresaw the death of Padme during childbirth. He lived with decades of regret and he couldn't permit himself to fail his son now.
Cannot believe people think this is real
I grew up with the prequels, but this scene gets me very emotional every time. This is Star Wars.
I'm so glad that it happens so many years ago , imagine if this would come out now. Every twist would be revealed in trailers
If the original trilogy was released today people would rip it to shreds and call it woke. As much as i loved these films they survived on nostalgia
@@darthnater9731 how could you call original trilogy woke? (God , I can hardly imagine calling that way anything related to SW , apart from Disney bs of course)

Lol true. If ROTJ came out today, Vader's literal last lines would probably be in the trailers to "build hype".
Between 1982 and 83, I saw both E.T. and Return of The Jedi in theatres, twice. Both had endings that have remained with me since I was that 7 year old sitting in the theatre, awe struck. I can still remember the audience gasping when the Emperor began electrifying Luke Skywalker, and loudly cheering when Vader picks up the Emperor and throws him. Audiences also cheered when those bicycles flew at the end of E.T. and I cried. These are just beautiful vivid memories. Much like Disney, The Wizard of Oz, or Singin In The Rain enhanced the imaginations of my parent's and grandparents' childhoods, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg did the same for the imaginations of 70s/ 80s kids.
i love watching these, its great to sort of feel what they felt watching this when it just came out ;D
Can't believe ambatukam witnessed this 🥲
The fucking dreamybull sound wft
If I was in the theatre back in ‘83, I would be shouting: “DO IT VADER! DO IT!“ and I would cheer as well if the audience does. That time would’ve been sick
I remember at 14 years old seeing this movie for the first time, thinking to myself do something Vader, do some thing! Then the whole theater irrupt it in cheers as the emperor took a dive down the shaft. Best ending of any movie ever! 👍👏👏👏👏
My brother and I headed over to the Edens theatre in Northbrook, Illinois after he got done with work. We got in line for the midnight showing at about 8:30....at that point the line stretched about 2/3 of the way around the building.
Hard-core fans all!
The emotion of the patrons in the theater as this scene built was palpable!
When Vader lunged forward, grabbed the Emperor and flung him over the railing, there was a roar the likes of which we thought would bring the roof down!!
A movie moment that I, personally, will never forget.
1:52 Yes shit, thank you so much. Thank you. That might just be what I need to buss. That might just be what I need to buss. Cuz AMBASING! AMBASING! AMBASING!
I remember getting teary-eyed at that part. Such a great story arc for an iconic character.
Darth Vader is one of the most epic characters I know of. To this day, people all over the world know his name. Maybe not who or what he is, but his name. I was 11 when I saw this in the theater for the first time and I choked up. I was not the only one to cheer when Vader saved his son nor cry when he died redeemed.
Such a good quality for a videotape from the 80s, I would have liked to be there, I already assumed the audience would applaud when Vader grabbed the Emperor from behind. You can tell that this audience feels the same as I do when they watched this scene, I feel pain listening to Luke's screams, and I always liked how Ian McDiarmid delivers each line of his, an incredible performance, he's the only Emperor Palpatine. Also when Palpatine is killed and we see all those ghostly shadows, amazing vfx from 1983, after ESB, ROTJ has the best visual effects from the OT.
It’s because it’s not real
I doubt the validity of this. Nobody was thinking of CZcams content back in that day. And the retro quality can be faked.
Well...Ian McDiarmid is the only person who had ever played the Emperor (apart from the cut person who played him in the original ESB)
Bro it’s a fake video. Play at 1:10 and you can here meme sounds, the “what do you mean” and the screaming is from those two girls reacting to some video online
Let me break this down:
1. The quality is extremely high for something filmed in the 1980s. In that alone, this is already a suspicious video. The person who uploaded the video tries to account for this lapse in logic by putting in the description that a 'local news segment' filmed the audience reaction, but I'm calling bullshit on two accounts.
a) It's a felony to record movies in the theatre, period. No exceptions.
b) As another commentor mentioned, there's people making meme noises.
2. The uploader claims that this clip was a 'newly discovered clip,' and yet it's nowhere else on the internet. Are we actually supposed to believe that the guy who's already posted audience reactions to Star Wars movies in the past and constantly indulges in Star Wars stuff on his CZcams channel is the finder and sole possessor of this film footage? Isn't it interesting that the uploader provides no details for the film footage as it exists today? Just conveniently, all of the details provided cannot be factually verified or checked?
Everyone at 1:40 : DO IT
Vader: *does it
Everyone: YES YES YES YES YES
Palps: Dew it
Anakin: *does it
Everyone: NO NO NO NO NO
Pieces of history like this are invaluable and I'm so glad it exists
Lmao what, it’s fake
Amazing documentation of cinema history!!!!
Minus the part were this isn't from 1983, but at least 2000
Saw this on it’s 40th anniversary in theaters last week… No matter what, this is my favorite Star Wars episode… hearing people “woo” Darth Vaders redemption makes me smile so big :)
