It strikes me as you cut between the John Tenniel illustrations and the Disney clips that the latter did pay much homage to the former. Carroll's words stand on their own but the marriage of them with Tenniel's pictures is priceless, so much so that they are hard to separate. So glad you discussed the sister's dream. I believe it is the pure theme of where Carroll was taking us.

I have always interpreted this story from a child's perspective. Adults and the directives they give, conversations they the things that frustrate them are so confusing to children. Also, the wonderful imagination that children have and, sometimes use to escape boring or uncomfortable situations is incredible.

Please do the Messed Up Origins of the following:
    Jack and the Beanstalk
    The Wizard Of Oz
    Hansel and Gretel
    The Selkie Bride
    Bluebeard
    The Lion King
    The Sword in the Stone
    The Ugly Duckling
    Music Land
    The Goddess of Spring
    Anastasia
    The Swan Princess
    Thumbelina
*The Ugly Duckling, Music Land, The Goddess of Spring are also part of Silly Symphonies like The Pied Piper and Three Little Pigs while Anastasia, The Swan Princess and Thumbelina are non-Disney animated films.
    1. Anastasia is a loose adaptation of the legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia
2.The Swan Princess is based on the ballet, Swan Lake
    3. Thumbelina is based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen.
    4. The Ugly Duckling, like Thumbelina, is also based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen.
    5. Music Land is loosely inspired by Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
    6. The Goddess of Spring is based on the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades.
    7. The Selkie Bride is a Scottish folktale about a mythological being called a selkie.
A selkie is a mythological being who is capable of therianthropy, changing from seal to human form by shedding their skin. A typical folktale is that of a man who steals a female selkie's skin, finds her naked on the sea shore, and compels her to become his wife. But the wife will spend her time in captivity longing for the sea, her true home, and will often be seen gazing longingly at the ocean.
She may bear several children by her human husband, but once she discovers her skin, she will immediately return to the sea and abandon the children she loved. Sometimes, one of her children discovers or knows the whereabouts of the skin. Sometimes it is revealed she already had a first husband from her own kind.
Although in some children's story versions, the selkie revisits her family on land once a year, in the typical folktale she is never seen again by them. In one version, the selkie wife was never seen again (at least in human form) by the family, but the children would witness a large seal approach them and "greet" them plaintively.
Male selkies are described as being very handsome in their human form, and having great seductive powers over human women. They typically seek those who are dissatisfied with their lives, such as married women waiting for their fishermen husbands.

It is a very whimsical little children story. And the thing I like most, is that it doesn't have to make sense or have any hidden meaning or any lessons. But I think one lesson every one can take from the book, is that it's best to have some child like qualities like honesty and innocence. And always good to have an imagination.

  • @SassyXan
    @SassyXan Před 2 lety +2

So here’s my take: I have ADHD and Dyslexia and I can relate a lot to the book. If changes direction so often just like my adhd makes me get side tracked and go off on tangents, many of us call that going down the rabbit hole. It seems like nonsense to everyone else yet it makes perfect sense to me. Her repeating the verse of various poems just to be told they’re wrong when she’s sure she said them right is very relatable with my dyslexia, I can’t tell you how many times I say the wrong thing and think I’m saying the right thing. Many of the characters seem like analogies of various disabilities or other neuro divergent qualities, with the Griffen saying “he’s making it up” to describe the mock turtles sadness resonating a lot since many people think people with invisible disabilities are making it up for attention. The short temperedness of most the characters and irritability covers symptoms for a lot of disabilities, from ADHD to bi polar disorder and beyond. Even the Cato pulled/hate/hatter interrupting and not letting Alice finish her sentence, very common for me and other people with disabilities because we think we know the next thing they intend to say and our poor impulse control makes us cut other people off without meaning to. The dog seeming normal seems like an analogy for service dogs or emotional support dogs because neuro divergent people do tend to form strong bonds with animals especially dogs but I know this was written well before the current system of service/support animals was created. It seemed to give a small amount of normalcy to her in a strange and chaotic world, which comforted her. The cat admitting he’s mad just like everyone else reminded me of ND people like myself who have accepted our different-ness and recognize everyone’s a little different in their own way. You said many times the author meant nothing deep or philosophical and only meant to write a story to entertain a child with whimsical nonsense and yet I’d argue that still is justifiable grounds to analyze the deep physiology of childhood and coming to terms with a chaotic world, especially if you are different or especially if you feel a strong sense of justice even when it’s contrary to those around you. It can also be seen as a reflection of childhood wonder and admiration, albeit it is sorta creepy his fondness for children even with the context of Victorian England.

I marathoned this entire miniseries in one sitting. I look forward to your analysis of Through the Looking Glass, as that's an even stranger and trippier story. I hadn't heard there was an earlier revision of the first book that's quite different though, and that kind of intrigues me. Perhaps what intrigues me most is that although writing fiction seems to often be a seemingly challenging balancing act of entertaining and tying everything into a suitable moral, the Alice books go the other way, and I have to admit that it must have been even more challenging to write a complete non-sequitur with no real moral, have that be the moral, and have it all work. It isn't all an incoherent mess, and what is incoherent is fittingly so. I'd best describe Alice as organized chaos, as none of the chaos is really at odds with the rest of the story, and in fact, is in harmony with it.

My high school did "Alice in Wonderland" for our fall musical during my sophomore year and it was so much fun! I was in the ensemble and got to be a townsperson, a dancer in the Caterpillar song ("Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah"), and a card! I even got a special job: during the trial scene, the King of Hearts looked at me and clapped twice, so I ran offstage and got a gavel and then came back. The King of Hearts hit the gavel on a block of wood I also brought on, and for the rest of the trial scene, I just stood there with the gavel positioned above the block of wood. It wasn't a HUGE role, but I still remember having a TON of fun! I don't remember what card I was, we didn't really have assigned cards to wear *shrugs*

It's interesting how you said there are no real morals to take away from this story, and I agree! This story makes no real sense, but it has hints of hidden genius of a very intelligent author. But it seems to be a story that Carroll understood more than anyone else. I guess if we really want to attach any meaning to it, we could classify this story as being subjective.
For me personally, I could see it in a few ways. One way, is that it's a crazy as hell drug trip, but that's not really in-depth. LOL But I remember watching the animated movie as a kid, and other movies like Dumbo, and saw at least one common theme in these stories. One theme was that Alice and Dumbo are these innocent youths observing, witnessing, experiencing their strange environments. I don't think it's so much about life making sense, but mostly about how life doesn't make sense, especially to a child. Maybe Alice's dream was her subconscious' way of trying to make sense of things going on in her waking life, or some kind of symbolism that life in general, through her eyes or others' eyes, just doesn't make sense a lot of times. Same goes for Dumbo, he's a youth born into a strange environment with a gift he doesn't yet understand, and no one else understands, which makes him all the more confused as to why no one else seems to accept him. It's just youths reacting to a strange world and trying to make sense of what happens to them.
I liked the interaction between Alice and her sister at the end, and how the sister pondered and imagined Alice's dream being real when she is left alone. It has an eerie quality to it, like something is haunting both of the sisters. The idea of suddenly imagining Alice's dream come to life in the settings of everyday life, while I don't think anything in Wonderland is supposed to symbolize anything in waking life, it's still a scary notion to me. It almost reminds me of the ending to a scary story, like just when you thought Alice left all the insanity behind in her dreams, we suddenly discover that Wonderland followed her home, and is now somehow contacting her sister.
I also like that the sister pondered Alice's kind heart and creativity, it's always touching for me to hear when family members accept others just as they are. It kinda reminds me of a piece of flash fiction I wrote about 4 years ago. It's a short story about a mother narrating how she watches her 4-year-old daughter play out in the back yard with imaginary friends and pretending to fight off bad guys in her own little dramas she makes up, and at first being concerned about her daughter being able to discern her fantasy world from reality, but at the end, realizing that her daughter is just creative and young, and will grow, but also has an active imagination that could serve her well later in life. It's called, "My Little Princess." Kinda neat that it sounds like this story had the same idea. :)

I know you've mentioned the research part before but after you explained it the last time, it really helped me understand how much goes into making these videos. You put a lot of work in and you fucking awesome at what you do bro, keep it up. #JonShot1st

In June 1999, I learned I was pregnant. I had a copy of Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass (both in one book). I read part of the book out loud to my unborn son, then continued after he was born. I actually never got to finish reading it to him; life got in the way. I never saw the animated Disney movie in full. I love the stories as they were in the book! I can't comment on the movies based on it. I DID wonder if the author visited opium dens while writing the story!

Honestly, the most Alice-y thing I've ever really loved was Alice: Madness Returns on PS3. It was a fun game, and my first M-rated game. An M-rated 3-D collectathon platformer magical enough to satisfy my need for un-realism in games? It's brilliant!
I knew a bit more than I think most do about the original Alice in Wonderland…I may or may not have read the original story, but I saw a play based on the original story, and what's more, I do not recall the Disney version, I probably saw it when I was little but I remember nothing about it, so I don't have that clogging my knowledge or memory.
Regardless, I think you've earned a sub from me, Mr. Solo. Going through all your "messed-up origins" videos has been really interesting, and I'm happy that you put in so much effort in your research - I've had a few previously-held beliefs I've had debunked by this series, so it's been a good time! Carry on, good sir!
