    I play this whenever I'm at the airport waiting to board my flight or at my grandparent's house. If you rest the deck between your index and middle finger, you can make this solitaire truly "one-handed" and wedge the discards between your ring and middle fingers.

    I created my own additional rule. If you get four of the same suit in a row (a flush), then you also get to discard all four cards.

      This is actually the way I learned from my grandma! Matching the same number in the 1st and 4th is the same as matching suit in those slots, meaning you only remove the middle two. The only way to remove four is to flush them away.

    I remember playing this all the time when I was little, but haven't for the life of me been able to remember how in recent years. Thank you for the reminder. You've actually made me recall a different rule I played with: if the two cards in the middle matched - I don't remember if it was suit or rank, though it might have been either - you removed the outer two cards and played on.

    Really like this game. I made up a variant. If you draw an Ace of Spades, you can go thru the unmatched cards until the next unmatched ace ( if there are any). So you go thru all the cards behind the 4th card until you find another Ace of any suit ( again, if there are any.) All of the cards in between the Aces can then go into the discard pile including the aces. This gives a little purpose to the cards behind the 4th card instead of them just sitting there. Plus you get a big sense of satisfaction when you can discard 10/15 cards at a time. There's also no guarantee that the Ace of Spades clears a bunch of cards each time it's pulled. It's rare that it happens which makes the game a little more exciting.

      This is a good variant, adds a bit more fun, but wouldn’t it sometimes end up with an odd number at the end because you’re not discarding two/four at a time? If you manage to get it down to one card at the end with this strategy, does that count as a win? Or do you have to just hope its an even number when you do the mass discard between the aces?

    • @kowalski3769
      @kowalski3769 Před rokem +1

      @@jac8680 Thanks!! I didn't take into consideration the odd/even implications. But I've thought about it and have an idea....
      What if we introduce a Joker card?? So we put 1 Joker car into the deck. The ultimate goal in One Hand Solitaire is to clear all cards and if we add the Ace of Spades variant you're right, we may have a problem clearing everything if we end up with an odd number. So we add the Joker card to help to make thing even.
      So what happens if we draw the Joker? We leave it in the drawn cards hand where it hangs out, hoping to survive until the end when it can match with the last card no matter what suit or number. It's a winner at that point!
      IF it happens to fall in between the 4 'live' cards when a 2/4 card match is made, it gets caught up in the middle and is lost to the discard pile. It's a loser at this point!
      So the point of this variant is to clear all cards using the Ace of Spades rule and we throw in the Joker as a survivor. We can call it.... Survivor Solitaire!!
      What do you think? It just adds a couple of more simple, elements to a very easy game. There's no strategy to it, but it makes it a little more interesting. I'm open to any other ideas. Again, thanks for your comment, Cheers!!

    I added a point system to any remaining cards: number = value, all face cards including A=10 for simplicity's sake. Lowest (best) score I've achieved is 13 (3 and a K)

      If the 1st & 4th cards match in suit, you discard the middle two cards. If the 1st & 4th card match in number, you discard all 4 cards. Hope that helps! And thanks for the post. I had forgotten the specifics and am now excited to share with my kiddos. :)

      Just play once through. You only win if you discard all cards so you need a match in rank to end.
