  • Today I want to tell you about the DIY trailer build and the journey I took to get there. I built this trailer in 2016 and sold it in 2018. It has taken me to Outerbanks, Florida, across the Georgia Traverse and many other places here in the South East.
    This trailer starts with a basic 2x3 frame and 1.5" tube sides. I added FRP to the floor and used fence pickets for the body. I then used super strut to construct the roof rack, used the super strut accessories to mount things like my maxtrax and hilift, and topped it off with my CVT mount rainier tent.
    Let me know if you have any questions.

      @@PatrickMetzger I hear you man, I have 3 kiddos and work full time. I’m getting into the overlanding as I can bring my oldest with me and I have friends that I wheel/camp with. I was wondering how the solid axle would go as in getting hung up on rocks and stumps, I see a few companies offer independent suspension kits for 500-750$. Most of my wheeling is day trips and I’m not building my 2021 Tacoma for hard core off-road. I have an old Toyota pickup for mud/rocks. The more I look into roof racks and bed racks the more I want the trailer. Some of the trips I have been on are hundreds of miles of road with trails so it would be nice to set up camp and not have to break it down to hit trails

    Wow, why wouldn't you just sand the lead paint off of the 40 year old trailer? I personally feel that you overreacted due to the lead paint. Don't quote me on this, but most house paint contained lead until not that long ago, and it only harmed you if you damded it, and then breathed in the sanded particals. And lets not forget, in WW2 the army waterproofed their willys with an asbestos compound, yet almost nobody died because of it.

      @PatrickMetzger  Před 4 lety

      Zachary I’m pretty sure I said it in the video, but I did not have space in my yard to do it outside and I didn’t want lead all over the interior of my garage.

    Can we all stop calling SUVs trucks

    • @PatrickMetzger
      @PatrickMetzger  Před 5 lety

      Matthew R it’s a habit, why is it such a big deal to you?

    • @matthewr2361
      @matthewr2361 Před 4 lety

      @@PatrickMetzger Not a big deal. Just not at all the same. Most (not all) SUVs are unibody with rear coil overs for increased comfort and better handling. Most trucks (not all) are body on frame designs with rear leaf springs to handle payload and towing coupled with larger brakes and better designed rotors to be able to stop the vehicle under load. Also the frame design is much stronger, beefier and heavier, to be able to withstand crumpling from impact with a trailer behind it and added weight stressing the welds and metal more. So I mean call it what you want, it's a free country I could care less, it's just not accurate in the slightest. I can say a civic is a sports car and treat it as such. Makes no difference other than it makes me look stupid. Like calling an SUV a truck.

    • @PatrickMetzger
      @PatrickMetzger  Před 4 lety

      Matthew R while appreciate your desire for accuracy, I probably would never have decided to correct someone who said something like car or truck to describe their vehicle no matter what it was. Good luck at your attempts to make CZcams more accurate. 🍻
