- Today's video is me gushing over one of the best TV performances I've ever seen on Jools Holland (for those of you outside the UK it's THE show that highlights new and current bands). I'm talking about Sleaford Mods. Now...I'm aware music like this isn't always to everyone's taste but to me, there's something incredible about this band and in particular this song being performed on this show. I love it. I can't tell you how many times I've watched it. Maybe you can enlighten me? Or if you don't like it, please tell me why so.

What do you think of the mighty Fall Justin? Any value?
I’d love to hear your thoughts on Fontaines D.C.! Love your channel so much! 💙💚💙💚
Definitely intrigued. And, as an introvert, also kinda scared.
P
My son got me in to this band , I'm a old punk and he told me to listen carefully and I totally got it they have a brilliant old school punk feel to them.
Sleaford mods reminds me of John Cooper Clarke at his very best. I sometimes bust a gut laughing to Sleaford Mods, sometimes shake my head in disbelief that people as old as me can still make music that good...
A band that actually says something meaningful.
@@jaycameron hahaha
I’ve been a ‘guitar based rock’ fanatic all my life, and always will be….but Sleaford Mods just make me smile. Unique and refreshing.
HOLY CRAP!!!!!! I just watched it 10 times in a row. It really got great at 5. I just watched a man, to a simple loop, tell the greatest story ever told. It transported me to where he was and what he was feeling. This is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
a bit late to the party andy pandy where the f-----'k have you been its 7 years old
@@anthonymitchell8893 well yeah, thats what I thought too. How has the Sleaford mods not been on my radar? Then I listened to bits of the entire records, and thought, thats why. As a whole they are not that great.
I will need an reaction to Kid Kapichi.
Fun fact, i recorded the original version using a Yardbirds sample "For your love" Glad Andrew remade it with original beats, just off to meet them now i will pass on your kind words x
Your original version is great, it's more fun and less acerbic. Sadly times have called for something harsher.
That version is the only SM track on the jukebox at my local. I always put it on. :)
Got a Link to your original?

Genius
I can vouch for Justin cheering you up on a daily basis if you're feeling low. Thank you, Justin, and your producer, for all you do.
Agree wholeheartedly. I stop by every day too.
You won't ever see anyone ask for Sleaford Mods at Karaoke. That's a test of greatness.
This is why you are a great musician. Talented, humble, charismatic and open to so many different types of music.
I always see this as their seminal performance - it's what grabbed me and installed my love of the Mods - seen them live which was a joy and love all they do
I like how thoughtful this breakdown and critique was, this performance seems more relevant today than at any point in the last 30 years…
No voice acting in this performance. Is obvious he lived it and experienced the fall into oblivion that so many of us did in 90's Britain. Im convinced the ticking hes doing with his hands and body is a result of him reliving the experiences as he conveys them in his lyrics. Fucking epic delivery of a genius piece of writing. Raw and super real. I remember signing on fortnightly, being restarted numerous times when there were fuck all job openings and very little opportunity for people from particular socio economic backgrounds. This tune hits hard if you experienced those times. Some very dark stuff going on yet entertaining and even funny at times. Just awesome.
I heard him say in an interview he did that because it helped him remember the lyrics.
Sleaford Mods are incredible live, absolutely brilliant night out.
I love this band, thanks for covering them Justin! This channel gets better and better!
I just started working in a cafe in a run-down area of my town and Sleaford Mods have been the soundtrack to my walk to work every morning
Punk music is alive and well. Glad to see it.
His acerbic delivery reminds me of Mark E. Smith of the Fall… they were another excellent band form the UK… these guys are good
Very true. "Jobseeker" is somewhat of a modern style version of early The Fall songs like Fiery Jack & A Lot of Wind.
Absolutely love this song and particularly this performance. It's so bloody powerful. A great critique as always, Justin!
Hey Justin, went and listened, and then listened to their other songs, then listened to their interviews. I have to say these guys are a diamond in the rough. Loved it!!!!!
Been listening t The Mods four five years. Cheers from the South Carolina Lowcountry (USA)
I had never heard of Sleaford Mods until you released this video and now I'm going to see them live next week!
Thank you Justin for turning me onto such great music ❤️
Ive been following Sleaford mods for a while, ive just found your channel and yeah really good to hear your analysis of this performance.. good stuff!
Justin I love you for doing a video about Sleaford Mods! Your videos are class you are a legend!!!!
Stumbled across your channel a few days ago and i'm blown away with how good it makes me feel watching each video! Cheers mate!
Thanks a lot for the decryption, for me as a german and a sleford mods fan it is always a good piece of work.
What an amazing act. Big shout from the US. Britain really does produce some talent.
I'm also loving other various UK electronica and experimental based acts like
Faithless, Burial, Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Unkle, Autectre, Massive Attack,
Orbital, Leftfield, Stereo Mcs, The Streets, Goldie, The Bug, Allflaws
Autechre are awesome. I used to work in the building with them decades ago on the outskirts of Manchester
Aside from the overall enjoyment I get from this channel, I love that I always manage to learn something, awesome! 😁
Jason is definitely the best modern punk lyricist I've heard. The contrast between the minimalistic music and his energetic vocal delivery is just perfect. I've always said that creating minimalistic music that still manages to catch people's interest is much harder than recieving attention and interest for writing intricate and complex music. I usually don't read, or care about, the lyrics to most of the music I listen to, but that's definitely not the case with Jason's lyrics. They really deserve all of the attention they've received, and more.
This video has been in my regular rotation for over a year now thanks to you!
Fun fact. The vocalist from Sleaford Mods was on the latest Viagra Boys record that just came out. He did a feature on the song Big Boy.
Also on the last Frustration album.
Also on the title track of the new Alex Cameron record!
I love you channel Justin. You never disappoint to be entertaining. Keep it going
These are the first band I went to see live on my own. Completely in a league of their own, Spare Ribs was a saving grace through COVID
I love how the other guy can't help smiling and enjoying the whole performance of his band mate there at the end. The last sound the singer does into the mic is also very fitting and hilarious too. 😆 Brilliant. An excellent example on how to make an art form out of a dire situation.
Sometimes Jason Williamson has these unexpected tics sounding like a sheep and stuff and you can see Andrew the beat man cracking up almost do a spit take 😄
Top blokes. Great follow on Twitter too.
I love how Andrew just goes "I wrote this, now time to enjoy it" and just dances, top man.
Fuckin love this performance on Jools Holland - was the first Sleaford Mods tune I'd heard and still my favourite. Good work fella.
Its so good to find an artist by chance like i just have.Ive never heard of Sleaford Mods untill now….Wow i love them, and the performance on Jools Holland is incredible. Thanks for this mate👍
Jason Williamson had a cameo role as singer in a pub in the Netflix adaption of DdM's Rebecca a few years ago. I almost dropped my glass of pinot noir when I saw his face!
And a League of Gentlemen reference thrown in for good measure! Only found this channel recently and absolutely loving it.
I saw them in Glastonbury this year and they blew me away!
Super interesting and insightful as always.. but I found this one in particular even more so.. love your work 🤘🤘🤘
Quite true Justin, I keep coming back because you cheer me up. Thanks
Great stuff 👍 I always see a bit of Ian Dury in the Sleaford mods !!!!
They are incredible Justin! I agree totally with you here that this is one of the best performances ever on JH! Sleaford mods/ orbital collaboration is incredible! Keep up the great work
Andrew creates killer Bass lines.
PS Check out Ken Loach's film, I, Daniel Blake. Perfect summation of the reality of a 'Job Seeker'.
Justin, I bloody love your channel
THANK YOU for introducing me and others to this.....incredible!
I swear I thought you were saying “Sleeps with Moths” - which is a pretty good name for a band imo!
Same here!
It's the little things-like your perceptiveness in noting the contrast between the way he holds the mic and the intensity of the performance which hints at something more going on beneath the surface with this guy (something complex and interesting, I'm imagining)-that makes these videos such a delight. I LOVE this performance and your analysis of it. Was not familiar with Sleaford Mods before. Now I'll check them out, thank you.
Subscribed solely because you reviewed Sleaford Mods, these guys are fucking amazing, saw them in New York about two months ago for the first time, blew my ‘effin’ mind!
Brilliant, I missed this. Love it. This is on a par with electric six performing high voltage 👍. Thanks for bringing it to my attention Justin.
Thxs again I got my kids into ur channel much appreciated HB in Az
Thanks for this recommendation Justin! Such a great song and powerfully performed on Jools Holland too!
I had a brief stint where I needed to go on Jobseekers, or the "Rock'n'Roll" to use my dads cockney rhyme, and this encapsulates how dire a place it is for the long waits, no respect, or care for your wellbeing. Now I need to do a deep dive on this band. Cheers!
Ive just came across this and love how youve broken down each segment of the track ...brilliant 👌🏻
Ty Justin for everything
What a brilliant breakdown of a brilliant, contemporary band. Of the times.
A wonderful bonus of these videos is that your own empathy shines through, empathy through experience, informed empathy is something so important to share and rallying against the policies that damage us is vital.
You manage to do all that and make me smile every video. Also, an exemplary display of what it is to love music, from the Cardiacs to Sleaford Mods.
My recommendation is please make an episode on Enablers (Green Screen) or Vic Chesnutt (Live ‘Everything I say) if you know neither then I am sure you will love, if you know both (I am almost certain you do!) you’ll already know why I’m proposing them for your wonderfully adept appraisal!.
Thanks for such a great show and big up from the heart of Norfolk.
Love this comment.
enablers, yes!
Awesome video man I love deep dives into the shallows
Simple but effective. Great story. Great Art. Thank you Justin.
You are a wonderful soul, Justin. ❤️
Justin is simply a joy, his honesty and positive demeanour only adds to the planet while the mass media often tries to bring people down with their propaganda merely designed and selling stuff.
The Sleaford mods i discovered last year and I agree one of the most interesting bands in ages with their take on life and what modern britain is really like, rather than the jubilee and cream teas.
I really think that you should follow this with a Billy Nomates video. She's frickin' awesome and her guest appearance on Sleaford Mods, Mork N Mindy is bloody mint 🤘🏼
Great song a definite fav
Discovered her through her Collab with Sleaford Mods , checked out her debut album and been a fan ever since !
Unique artist.
Wow just found you and Sleaford Mods. The first thing that popped into my head was Cockney Rap, but having subsequently listened to other tracks they nail some awesome beats that go well beyond the rap genre with some interesting influences. Thanks for broadening my horizons 👏
They’re not cockneys!
Really liked this, thank you
You never disappoint us, Justin.
I'd never heard of these two before great find Justin
Very good suggestion!! i freaking LOVE this song! God bless you from the Garden Island of Kauai!
I just realized Andrew Fearn from SM was my teacher when I studied Music Technology in Nottingham back in 2001 (briefly)
ive just got into this band and i love them!
I love them too!
TCR is another one of my favorites. Scathing social commentary. They are one of my favorite bands.
My mate an ace bass player from Nottingham, was asked if he would put down bass tracks for Sleaford Mods. He laid down some great recordings, on hearing them the Mods said "that's perfect" ," now could you please do them again , but shitter"
Brilliant eh? 🤣
Love this channel. I would love to see you shine a light on some overlooked 80’s gems. May I suggest The band Waysted. A project from the late, great Pete Way. Particularly the song Heroes Die Young from the album Save Your Prayers. This is not most folk’s radar and it’s a wonderful album and band.
Keep the great content coming. Cheers!
totally agree, amazing bit of tv, spot on review!
Only watching this now. Spectacular performance by Sleaford Mods and equally great analysis. There’s something in their performance that is reminiscent of The Shamen in the early nineties; unashamed British accent, but more urgent story to tell and just a whole lot more unadulterated intensity!
Nice review of a very special (needs) band and a "beautiful" tune. Thank you!
Lovely insight and i agree! really enjoying these vids Peace and love Justin
Their latest, "UK Grim", reminds me of a "Ghost Town" for the 2020s.
Damnit I'm actually drinking a can of Strongbow, right now, Delicious beverage of the peasants.
The drink that got me in AND put me through some tough times 🤣
Have one for me, pal 👍
'Stick in a 5 and go' is my favourite by them
I have the same skull in my living room, my skull also listens to your amazing voice Justin x
And important stuff that you said at the start of the video. Really appreciated.
British version of Rap. Very entertaining! Thank you for your great work and keeping a smile on my face.
Saw an interview, Jason is massively influenced by real artists like wu tang
Sleafords are the best British act in decades. Yard Act are a close second right now. Subbed immediately. edit: how have i only just found this channel?!
Saw them in Perth 4 days after we saw you , then COVID lockdown , your both great
oh my goddddd yesss we need more sleaford mods reactions out there in the world
You are awesome!!!❤️💕
That's frickin great. I'd never heard it before but I feel like I lived it
These guys are brilliant.
Yes! Glad you checked them out. MORK AMD MINDY is a banger.
Great video. True grit.
I met the singer Jason on a flight once. Had a chat. Lovely bloke. I wish them all the success!
I think it reminds me most of 'It's A Mug's Game' by Soft Cell in the 80's - both in the deliberately basic synth tracks and the really overt antisocial attitude. I do appreciate that the Pint guy just turns on the track and stands back - usually there's a pretense of standing at a synth and turning knobs & buttons for a performance like this - I love how brash is is just to say 'it's all pre-made folks, here we go!'
It’s the absolute true meaning of punk to me , anyone can be an artist , love em
Justin, you're a refreshing pleasure to watch and I find your musical knowledge really fascinating.
Thank you for reviewing The Sleaford Mods, I love this and anyone who has truly had the "pleasure😂🤣😂" of a unique, first-hand experience of signing-on at a UK Jobcentre can fully, undeniably, deeply 'appreciate' this.😆
Break out the Strongbow... 😁 👍
Well put, speaks volumes to those that hear it 🤘🏻
Legendary performance right here. Sleaford Mods rule. - Great reaction and comment. Cool vid.
I had never heard of the darkness until 2015 when my UK boss introduced me to you. Been a fan ever since! Black Shuck is my Favorite!
Recently watched them live in Zagreb, I find them so much inspiring like no other bend or musicans before... Driving me to create
I just discovered Sleaford Mods for myself a couple weeks ago and that Jools performance was the first thing I saw from them. I stumbled across Viagra Boys around the same time. Pretty good timing as they've just collaborated!
Sleaford Mods aren’t usually my type of music but after reading about them then going on CZcams to listen to some of their songs I was hooked. I saw them in Cardiff a few years ago and they were great live, very entertaining especially the bloke playing the music who usually stands around drinking a pint of lager while doing so.
Nothing better than a full on , take it to limits , no fucks given performance, thanks for sharing
Brilliant Jussy Bhoy……….more Mods!💪🏴
I acquired a grant that bought me a CS1x whilst on the New Deal for Musicians thing. I left my fan heater on as I slept and it melted the case around the two wheels. It's all curvy now on the left hand side but it still works as it should. My crappy Yammy definitely helped me to continue with my jaded dream. A version of Jobseeker is my next project. Hopefully, my good friend will come up with the punk goods when I lend him my mic and interface. He's got a lot that he needs to get off his chest. The conversation that resulted after watching the Jools Holland version made me realise that I can create similarly basic music and he can pour his heart out on the mic. Depression can be overcome in many ways that don't involve prescriptions.
Dude... thank you for this gem of a band. I got transported back in time which for me is musical magic. Could you do Sarah McLachlan's Drawn to the Rhythm one day? I got there from this video - in my own musical memory.
I see "Sarah McLachlan", I like
