    Welcome back to another episode of the Rework Retrospective series! Today I want to go over Evelynn: Agony's Embrace, whose gameplay update finally reimagined her into what an assassin is supposed to be: someone who hides in the shadows and only appears when she's about to strike.

      Hey Vars can you do a Fiora's rework video in the future. Like talking about how she got reworked what insipiration of the design. Also the main part is why she has no champ teasers, events, spotlights, gameplay preview, new voice lines like GP's rework before her and after her rework every champion that got full VGU reworked until the latest one received everything. The champs that got a full VGU in order starting form gangplank are:

      Panth 2018
      Fiddle 2020

      Mundo 2021
      In this list of Full VGU only Fiora has no Champ Spotlight, Champ tease trailer, New voicelines, New recall animation, new emotes ctrl 1/2/3, mini events. Yup that's Fiora
      i'm just really curious or somewhat jealous/delusional like it's haunting me just thinking about it even though it's already 7 yrs. add to that still having no legendary regardless of how popular she is, while Yone got his legendary in less than a year of release. Almost all of Top lane champs has a legendary or 2 already, so how about Fiora?
      Thanks love your videos!!!

  • @wastingsun
    @wastingsun Před 2 lety +360

    As an Eve main, this is the way I see her:
    She is good if you snowball, but if you don't, every other single assassin in the game will laugh at you for not even holding a fraction of their power.
    She has relatively little "outplay" potential like Zed, Ekko, Fizz etc, so she compensates it by having massive snowball power.
    She gets easily invaded and stalled out, and it makes her a coinflip character. You either won hard, or lost hard.
    In a lot of my ranked games I'd play, if I did well I'd be complimented left and right cause shes relatively simple to burst as when ahea.d
    If I didn't snowball, its hard to do anything and I'd get harrassed and flamed all game. That is Evelynn.

    • @PopcornBunni
      @PopcornBunni Před 2 lety +8

      Yeah, that's why I don't think she's as balanced as Vars is interpreting. Technically a coin flip is "balanced" by a 50% win rate, but it doesn't mean the game-to-game experience is a balanced one.
      The issue is her W takes up so much of her power budget it's hard to just shift around numbers or add extra mechanics elsewhere in her kit to give her more flexibility. So she ends up feeling unfair to play against because permastealth +hard CC + % MR shred on an assassin lol, and agonizing to play as since you have to wait 4 millenia for her W to cook and if the opponent has any way to live the combo, you essentially did nothing but waste time while the enemy jungler either cleared camps (faster than you could if you were trying to at the same time btw), added pressure somewhere else, took an objective, or, worse case, turned your gank into a skirmish you have no way of winning.

      The change from max to current health is one of the main reasons why her play rate plummeted and eventually led to the removal of the champ from the weekly rotation for a while until season 4 came and 30/0/0 masteries and changes to items made her insanely broken, it was the only champ I enjoyed to jungle with back in the day.

Mage items were bad last season, there was nothing changed between last season and this season for items Evelynn would actually buy. Honestly, I'm somewhat new to the game, so I don't know anything about old Evelynn, but when I first encountered her on the enemy team, my friends obviously warned me that she was dangerous. Of course, I still died with no clue as to how, feeling a bit of frustration. That sense of unfairness was pretty short lived though, and now that I know how the champ works, I remember it fondly as a very immersive and well done assassination, not a boring, brute force "I do all this damage and you can't even touch me because I'm now invisible *poof*" type of death I often got from Akali for example. So when it came time to finally decide what champ I would play if I ever get autofilled Jungle, Evelynn was the only one that interested me, because I think even her victims can have fun and get a scare out of seeing that the arrow points toward the tower you were heading to for safety... Or the worry when you see an Eve get out of vision on low health (like losing sight of a spider in your room) and not knowing if she's still around to back up her teammates and sneaking behind you...

Unlike some Zed or Akali who can just be fed and oneshot your entire team through stealth and billions of dashes, Eve remains simple and always play a macro game instead of getting you through an unfair kit's advantage.

    I miss old Eve so much. No one else comes close to capturing the feel of her on-hit AS build shredding targets from stealth. Shaco is the closest, but he can't use his stealth to lie in wait for an opening. And now Evelynn went from the most diverse builds in the game to building the same 3-4 items every single game.
    The only major issue with her old kit as an assassin was her ult being a % current-health engage tool. Swap it out for her new one and, combined with her E's double on-hit proc and BotK, she very much becomes an assassin that picks out a target, melts them down, then ults out.
    The Q change is fine to shift her damage to be more upfront, but her W and E feel bad for both her and her opponent.
    W especially feels contentious. Hard CC and %MR shred on an assassin removes both forms of counterplay against them, but the issue is more complex than that. So W has an arrow indicator showing the opponent where evelynn is when the charm is fully cooked. This seems like it would be a built-in safety valve by giving her opponent some extra counterplay, but it comes with a work around to that counterplay Evelynn can exploit. Since the arrow indicator only shows up when the charm is fully primed, and since Evelynn's Q has a travel time, it doesn't take 300 IQ to put the two together and anyone who has played 3 games on her can figure out to cast Q right as the charm finishes priming, meaning Evelynn reveals herself before the arrow indicator even comes into play, and resulting in the hard CC from stealth without proper counterplay.
    Her E meanwhile is in a similar kind of unbalanceable state as something like [insert any Akali ability]. For a while after her rework launched, it had insane AP scaling, which, combined with her W MR shred and protobelt, meant she would just dash in, point and click E, then ult out and one-shot just about everyone. The damage has since been lowered, but is now basically just used for the movement speed boost to stay on top of someone while she procs her Q bubbles. Essentially doing the same thing as her old W but without the slow cleansing aspect.
    The root cause of her issues is, funnily enough, her W. Since she can hard CC and resistance shred from stealth, the ability takes up a huge amount of her power budget, making the rest of her gameplay devolve into the same repetitive loop of fish for W until it works or be useless if it doesn't.
    Old Evelynn was by no means a picture of balance or design. Titantic+Triforce tank Eve was the meta toward the end of her lifespan, and was obviously not a healthy nor particularly assassin-y playstyle of pretending to be Xin but without the good parts of his kit. That said, there are plenty of better ways for her rework to have been handled, especially given how Riot would end up balancing other hybrid scaling assassins, Shaco in particular, who's long stealth functions as a backwater interpretation of Eve's.

      I also miss old eve I enjoyed all her quirky builds and was very disappointed when they took away her ad scaling in the rework, the old W and Q combo’d very well from not an assassin perspective as much of a sustain fight perspective which I found much more enjoyable than the more burst and disengage style eve we have now.

    That out of the way - after a few years of playing her and learning the game overall, you've hit the mark quite accurately with this video. I am surprised because I've over time begun to recognize Evelynn is a "macro assassin" unlike any of the other assassins in the game.
    If you want a mechanical 1v9 assassin, its better to play Qiyanna or even Yone with their mobility and tools - Evelynn is entirely designed, and balanced, around picking of a single priority target on the map. She is not fast, has no dashes, has no defenses. Sure you can use the ultimate as an escape or a dash, but it is a massive taxing decision to make - either give up the single strongest killing ability you have, or use it for a one time use of a dash/untargettability. It is not like Akali who can "choose" to kill you with any 4 of her abilities, OR use any 4 of them to escape. That's something I've hated with the "problem" reworks like Irelia, Akali, or new champions like Qiyana and Yone. They have tools to be aggressive OR defensive in any combination - Evelynn does not, having to give up a powerful ability for a one time escape.
    Speaking of not being fast, with the new items and new champions, sometimes it feels frustrating and unfair AS the Evelynn the speed and freedom at with other Junglers could do her job. Sure I can path around the control wards and come in a lane at a unique angle for a surprise - but that might take 10 seconds set up! Meanwhile, Nocturn, Kayn, Hecarim, Qiyana, Akali, can sort of dash in with speed or over walls and don't give a rat's ass about positioning. Even more so before Evelynn hits level 6. Then even if a fight like that breaks out, Eve doesn't have the skirmishing potential on par with some of these other champions to "fix" or "clean up" a fight unless they are all very conveniently low and maybe stand together to let you E or Ult them. Very satisfying when it happens dont' get me wrong, but it's largely not her forte. Then let's say you survive early game, make the "right" kills, stack up Mejais and have your full build - you still can't truly team-fight in the way other Assassins or Slayers would - Evelynn wins "fights" by making intelligent picks to weaken the enemy, making every fight a 4v5 or a 3v5 before it even happens. In an outright 5v5 it is very difficult for her to navigate, especially with no mobility and some fucker with Aoe True Damage Max % Damage with a Collector wipes the entire team. If your team as a whole is stronger, and decides to death-ball objectives and fights, it's likely Evelynn can't "get in" consistent worthy kills, nor can she really split push. Let's say a game is doomed and you can't teamfight so as an Evelynn you might in desperation go split or try to take tower bounties, whatever - by showing yourself on the map you automatically lose all pressure. Now the enemy KNOWS you're not around and can confidently fight. You remaining hidden is all of your pressure even if you can't kill the enemy - they don't *know* for certain that you can't.
    Long story short like you said in the video - it's odd, despite the stealth she is a very fair assassin, a true assassin. If an Evelynn gets fed and takes over the map - its likely that a lot of poor macro decisions were made in the early to mid game - at least it wasn't brute force and 200years stat-checking that did it. Since Evelynn's rework, she has not recieved any major changes or nerfs at all - little numbers up or down here and there but nothing on the scale of Irelia or Akali whove had entire portions of their kit chopped to try to make for balance.
    Countering Evelynn you can look to put control wards behind you and on your flanks or ward her camps specifically as she has to come out of stealth to do them, moving them as you move on the map, if you happen to spot her coming honestly just turn on her first, she has no mobility or defenses she will have to use Flash or Ultimate. DoT also works as burns keep her passive from proccing, if her passive is delayed she can not heal and stays visible (Teemo is a great counter as Evelynn can step on his mushrooms AND is DoT.) If she is fed enough, no amount of Magic Resistence will help, but shields do - like Steraks, Gargoyles, Shieldbow. Invisibility, or hiding in bushes helps as her abilities (besides Ult) do not work without vision, so things like Qiyana, Vayne, and Akali are frustrating in micro-fights.
    End of my rant - I just like Eve!

    I started playing Eve a few months before her rework (it was already announced, in fact it was the dev blogs about it that got me into her), and as a main with almost 1M mastery points, your analysis is so accurate. She might be mechanically easy to grab but she's hard to play for an assassin, as she lacks the "pentakill potential" and sustain for duels others have, to put it in some way. People will always shit on you if you ever get behind, but most of the times, losing as Evelynn is just losing to the better team. You know, those who never go alone and always ward. Conversely, people will also bitch about how "easy" is to get ahead but countering her is just worth 75 gold per player. The higher you climb in ranks, the harder is to pick her.
    And yeah, people who miss her old versions are just weird. Eve used to be a stealthy stat checker, fun, but plain.

    • @cindermoth3421
      @cindermoth3421 Před 2 lety +2

      Oh I agree she was unhealthy, I think most others who played old eve agree as well.
      What I personally just miss is her flexibility item wise. You could go tank, AP, AD, or attackspeed and it would work fine with her kit.
      Because it was possible to build whatever you wanted really. And made it pretty doable to counter build the enemy.
      Thing is, they could simply add AD scaling back into her kit without it being an actual problem. Similarly adding back the attack speed buff on her E is also perfectly fine, though this might require a nerf somewhere.
      Thing is, we don't really miss her old version in its totality. We just miss the flexible itemization and the level 1 stealth. And we don't really have an issue with losing the lvl 1 stealth as that's just fair.

    Eve was my first main when I tried out jungle. She's a good champ to learn fundamentals with. My favourite cheese gank is to hide in the alcove after my first clear. She still has kill potential pre 6 if you communicate with your laners. The best thing they can do for me is to place a pink in a bush I'll be hiding in. Enemy places a ward, vision is blocked by the pink, they instinctively try to destroy it, and that's where I come in.

    Eh as much as I loved old Eve I know it was unhealthy. New Evelynn has clear points of counterplay and has some of her most frustrating parts of her kit taken out and replaced with utility.
    That said, I miss old Eve speed boost, it was just so satisfying to use and the refresh always felt good. People never respected the speed, so all skill shots would miss if the player just winded their pathing a little. It’s the main reason I just can’t play new Eve, she feels so slow.

      New Eve feels even more unhealthy tbh. The counterplay put in place has counter-counterplay Evelynn can utilize (casting Q at max range from stealth right before the charm arrow shows her location, so that the Q reaches the target as the charm finishes cooking. As someone else that misses old Eve and wants more out of the new iteration, I would gladly take heavy nerfs to her charm to put extra flexibility in other parts of her kit. Some example ideas to bridge the gap while adhering to her role as an assassin:
      W mini rework, nerfing the charm itself but providing other benefits for her to utilize
      W charm duration vs champions: 1/1.25/1.5/1.75/2s -> 0.5/0.75/1/1.25/1.5s (Monster charm duration compensated with an extra 0.5s duration)
      W cast range vs champions: 1200/1300/1400/1500/1600 -> 750 (just outside detection range)/850/950/1050/1150
      W cast range vs monsters: 1200/1300/1400/1500/1600 -> 1600 at all ranks
      NEW! W: While Allure is priming and up to 0.5s after it is fully primed, or detonated early, Evelynn gains 30/40/50/60/70% movement speed toward and around W's target.
      W arrow indicator appears after: 2.5s (When charm is fully primed) -> 1.5s (giving the target an extra second to react before she can CC them)
      W Magic Resistance shred: 25/27.5/30/32.5/35% -> 5/15/25/35/45 flat (Eve is supposed to be an assassin, not a tank shredder. At the very least she should end up playing as both by building the same items.)
      E mini rework, enabling physical and on-hit builds that forego much of her magic damage
      E Flat damage amount: 55/70/85/100/115 -> 35/55/75/95/115
      E Flat damage damage type: Magic -> Physical
      NEW! E deals additional damage equal to 50% of her bonus AD
      Empowered E bonus damage removed. Instead, empowered E now attacks all targets twice, applying on-hit effects to her primary target each time
      NEW! Empowered E now grants Evelynn bonus attack speed on her next three basic attacks. This bonus attack speed can exceed the normal cap, up to 3 attacks per second.
      Bonus attack speed: 40/60/80/100/120%

      @@PopcornBunni I wouldn't say new Eve feels more "unhealthy" (I know I used the term before, but I realized it's a weird vague descriptor of gameplay patterns), rather her gameplay and counterplay is more linear and flat. Old eve had flexibility by moving in and out with her speedboost and reset, making it feel good to juke opponents abilities and playing mindgames with them even out of stealth. New eve needs to commit all in or her ult to achieve the same effect, which is more fair and allows more power budget to go to her damage, but it's not as fun.
      I like the idea of a speed boost on W target once primed, though I will say that your point about Q having too much"counter-counterplay" is sorta the point of Q. She has a "ranged charm" but it's harder to activate optimally because of the long prime duration, and it's gated behind having to land a skillshot. I believe that W is considered balanced and also inconsistent among higher skill players, where even though you can activate it with a targeted E, Q2, or auto-attack, it takes long enough to prime that most good opponents reposition into a safe place by the time you can even proc the charm. That's why some just use it for the slow and MR shred instead. It punishes out of position people really well, as it should.
      Also, highly mobile assassins are already a problem, and while I like the speed boost idea, I'd worry it would make Eve too effective in catching people out. This is why both versions of Eve need to absolutely be ahead in order to be effective. The smaller losses in damage wouldn't fully compensate for the higher effectiveness of her W, and it would likely make her even more Feast or Famine than she already is. Even if you move some of that burst and scaling into an on-hit build through E, I think that just makes the current Eve playstyle unplayable while not really making on-hit viable. The only reason she was able to build that way then was because her speed boost made it possible to stick to enemies. It would just be worse base eve build because instead of bursting people she catches with W, she would have to more slowly auto them. She doesn't have the durability or kit to survive any long-terms duels with anyone, so she just wouldn't be picked and Xin Zhao or other better auto-attacking champs would be. That's also exactly what happened to old on-hit eve, burst was better and on-hit was just worse than her competitors.

    Invisibility was balanced before the Vision update sometime in season 5. That is, people could buy Pink Wards, which were also invisible themselves and you were NOT limited to them either. After the vision update, the pink ward became visible and limited to 1. This basically meant invis became completely OP since you can only have 5 pink (control) wards on the map at one time.

The flexibility she offered by going different builds against different team comps was unparalleled, and she had a lot better clear speed with her W movement, repeating Qs, and ridiculous double on-hit AS steroid, meaning she could do a lot more with her time than she can now. Her clear is so slow and dangerous for her now that she can end up feeling like you would be better off playing fucking yuumi jungle if the enemy invades just once.

    There are some inaccuracies regarding Evelynn's earlier versions. Season 1 Evelynn was without a doubt one of the most unfair assassins in the game since her first ability out of stealth wasn't a Slow like mentioned in the video but a 1.5 sec Stun. Combine that with her E that had a ridiculous AP scaling and procced Lichbane and you would routinely get oneshotted out of true stealth without any counterplay. They later removed her stun which made her much worse.
    When she received her first rework things actually became much, much worse at first and she became one of the most opressive midlaners (even in proplay) until she got nerfed.
    You see her ult didn't deal damage based on current hp like mentioned in the video but max hp and had a really great AP scaling (+1% damage for 50 ap) which led her to routinely nuke half of the enemy team for 35%+ of their max HP out of stealth + slowing them for 30-70% + getting a ridiculously strong shield for every enemy hit. This was also during the Deathfire Grasp meta which increased her damage potential even further. The playerbase being less skilled on average back then definitely helped her as well.
    Her ult was ultimately nerfed to deal damage based on current hp but old Evelynn was absolutely wild both at release and after her rework and she was without a doubt one of the most oppressive characters in the game for quite a while, both in her "base" form and after her first rework.

    On her first iteration, Shadow Walk was a stun not a slow. It was not a stat-check champion at all, it was an assassin that could stun you from invisibility. She used to gank lanes very early to gain 3 or 4 kills and then could completely obliterate everyone except tanks white they were stunned. It was changed to a slow later and after the change no one played her anymore.
    Her passive that reduced minion damage was there for a reason : back in the day, minions did way more damage and champions had less health at low lvl. Taking fights early was really hard, but Evelynn was all about getting fed early.
    Her E was her engage, dealing tons of damage with a lich bane and reducing the magic resist to let her Q spam deal more damage.
    The important part of her ultimate was the passive and the move speed, letting her stay on her target, then immediately hunt another one (with the huge heal).
    These were not random abilities, they worked very well together. Too well even, than Riot changed her stun to a slow in what became at the time the biggest nerf ever seen and completely broke her gameplay. Stat wise, Evelynn was built like an assassin, she was very squishy and couldn't take a fight without a clear advantage, so now that her ennemies could react to her engage she was completely useless. Some people tried to play her like a hybrid bruiser after the nerf, but it was mostly seen as a troll pick. People dodged games when their teammates picked Evelynn, at that time, it was that bad.

    The very first iteration of Evelynn had a 2 second stun which was nerfed into a 3 second slow instead. The second iteration did in fact do max health damage on R however was nerfed to current health afterwords.

    NA user: The Evelynn
    I was top 10 NA Evelynns on lolskill back in the day.
    I started playing I'm Oct. 2010 and she was instantly my main. Her old, old kit was so funny. Anyone could die on the enemy team, even if I didn't participate. I'd look for allies about to get a kill, then I'd go dive the enemy for a free heal and then another when I get the kill.
    The 2nd (current) rework saddens me greatly as somebody who mained her for 8 years. I still love her, but not nearly as much as she used to.
    imo she had the most diverse build path in game, if anyone's curious I can back it up, my builds varied greatly by match and I hardly went ap glass cannon. Now she's entirely forced into ap glass cannon.
    The new w is easily the most boring ability in the game to me, I can go like 4 was in a row which are literally just a short little slow, or a little spook for the enemy to make them walk back a sec. If she simply had her last w, I'd be so happy as a main. I didn't like how they turned her into not a reset character, she always was one. Also her r went from an engage to a disengage, so many moments where I wish I could've started with old r, because cc stops the new r in a lot of crucial moments. I'm okay with the new r, though, I understand. It's cool too and fitting.
    I had so many skin ideas for her, she had pretty meh skins for a long time, some of the news ones are cool. They released coven Eve on my birthday, but I never paid for it, since I didn't wanna put anymore money into Riot, I've put plenty into them in the past.

      I was much stronger with old Evelynn, even though I know general community is better with new Evelynn. Her late game build used to be so nuts, but then it was okay, but now it's kinda good again if I force out this once build that's super slow and expensive.

    Before I recently started watching more lore videos for League of Legends, I had no idea that Evelynn was an older League champ. I thought she was a fairly newer champ from soon before I got interested in League at all (I've only had an account since 2020). I think she looks great and from some of these older gameplay clips it makes it even more pronounced that some older champs are definitely in need of VU's!

    The first iteration you posted was actually after one of the biggest nerfs in old lol. Eve's first stealth would grant a stun instead of a slow on the first hit. Riot changed that to a slow later. Eve spent years in that deplorable state and was later reworked along with Twitch. That's when they introduced Camouflage for her.

    Seeing the new Evelynn was *THE* Reason why I came back to the Game.
    I'm still amazed that they were able to actually balance a Champ with Perma Stealth, her Ult feels great and her Design is amazing.
    The Thing about her Ult is: Yes, it's an untargetable AoE Disengage and Execute, but it's also her Ult. The Thing with having your Ult be your biggest Source of Execute Damage *and* Escape Spell, means that if she doesn't have Ult, she's extremely weak and can barely dare to take any Engagement. If you catch her out of Position even once and force her Ult, you are basically taking her out of the Game for the next Minute.

    I remember learning eve it wasn’t easy but since I was a yorick main and had learned how to split push effectively and safely meaning looking for the enemy and tracking them not just brainlessly pushing a lot of the learning was just in pathing so it was almost impossible to track out of all champs in the game camp sequencing on eve is probably the most difficult because you are so easy to invade so you have to play around that reverse full clears standard clearing leashless raptor/wolf start she’s very versatile but for a farming champ her clear isn’t that overwhelming
    She also has one of the highest reveal ranges in the game so while her stealth is a big advantage it’s hard for her to get in close to someone paying attention unlike any other stealth champ who either have a fairly low reveal range, massive gap closers, or are ranged

    I used to be an eve main before the latest rework. And I have to add an unmentioned nerf she got, she used to be able to hide behind towers, that is you could approach someone attacking a tower and be already in melee range before they even spot you. I personally liked the freedom you had in building her, you could go AP AD Tank on-hit crit. It did not matter what you built, it all worked and i found it great. I did personally dislike the rework due to my playstile. I used to ambush people from terrain corners and bushes to engage on targets already in melee range but new eve is not like that at all... you dont need to think about how you engage just throw charm and run at them. It feels much more brain dead.

  • @snowmcsnow4732

    I mained Evelynn during first seasons and reached a very high skill level and even remained very effective post-nerfs... until she got reworked, and Evelynn was never fun again. Pre-rework Evelynn could be built several different ways depending on situation; I often built speed and Critical damage to abuse her speed burst and shred the strongest of enemy champions in a second when fully built which isn't mentioned on the video. Now there's only AP build. People who started playing after 3rd season have no clue of all the fun they missed.

    Eve is very easy to counter. All junglers have to do camps. Knowing where she paths from camps, there's a limited amount of places she can now approach even when invis.
