Is the 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross a worthy competitor?

    While the name may hearken back to the days of legendary Mitsubishi sports cars, the 2023 Eclipse Cross is anything but sporty. That doesn't mean, though, that you should skip it if you're in the market for a compact SUV that now comes standard with AWD, a slew of safety features, lots of cool tech and really aggressive styling.
    For 2023, Mitsubishi keeps this turbocharged crossover much the same at first glance, but does throw in some new standard features, some new visual cues to enhance aesthetics and once again provides one of the best warranties in the business. If you can get over the somewhat plasticky interior, and the engine's subdued nature, this easy-to-maintain Mitsu could be just what you're looking for.
    Does this 2023 Eclipse Cross hit the mark? Let us know in the comments below!

    On a trip I drove 407.3 miles (100% highway driving) and it took 13.6 gallons to fill up in my 2022 Eclipse Cross SEL w/touring package. This averaged 29.9mpg and with a 16.6 gallon tank, still had 3 gallons of gas remaining in the tank. A year and a half after purchasing, the Eclipse Cross has been trouble free.

    8.2 s, 0-60 mph is actually pretty good for the segment. The Toyota Corolla Cross has a 0-60 mph that's over 10 s, same with the new Honda HRV. And most of the leather in the back seats is real, since Mitsubishi says "leather appointed."

      @overdrive_reviews  Před rokem +1

      Mehh it’s decent but, it’s a turbo engine - the two you mentioned aren’t! I thought this was a smooth power delivery, but could’ve had more oomph because of the turbo and “Eclipse” moniker.

    • @nightdrive2646
      @nightdrive2646 Před rokem +4

      With the classic GS-T and GSX Eclipse's of the past, they did have 2.0 liter turbo engines, and were quick, but achieved only 19mpg city. So while I understand the criticism with the cross lacking some power, the Eclipse Cross does get 25mpg city and is WAY more refined than the older eclipse ever was. I currently own a 2022 Eclipse Cross and a 2009 Eclipse GT (3.8 liter v6), and previously owned 1st and 2nd generation eclipse's.

    TLDR: This review is FIRE! Thank you!
    Solid review, thorough and objective on pros and cons...and yeah, I agree...at this price point relative to others' current pricing, it ALL matters. For me (not saying I'm right), if the EC can be had IRL for $5-8k less than same-equipped competitors, then okay: buttons and Win 95 UX, engine/wind noise, hard surfaces are more easily dismissed. FWIW, I owned a Mitsu ('93 Dodge Stealth 5MT - captive import of legendary 3000) for 10 years ('94-'03) and 100k+ miles and it ran like a top. Gorgeous in and out, amazeballs ergonomic interior (that starter button placement on Eclipse Cross, yeah, ummm WTH?!), was plenty quick and sporty for its weight (164hp or so) with an engine that purred like a lion when you punched it, had soft touch buttons and killer Mitsu stereo with 10-band equalizer - and it was the friggin' *base* model, go figure. Stupid comfortable all_the_time, still my favorite 10-hr+ road trip car ever (great, simple, manually tuned lumbar support standard on base model then!) and I've owned pretty nice Acuras, GMs, Hondas in the interim.
    Context: chintzy bean counters have taken over Mitsu after unfortunate accounting scandals of past decades - not current management's fault, though - Mitsu got left holding the bag after MB/Chrysler divorce (that marriage should've never happened!) and have never quite recovered...but I digress!
    I do give them credit for maintaining a US presence, sadly more than we can say for Suzuki which was also a value-prop car brand...my wife owned an XL-7 w/ 100k wty...which was a very capable/nice ride until about 90k when it started giving up the ghost - that warranty was MUCH needed! For me, the value isn't_quite there with EC vs. Toyota, Honda, etc. but everything is crazy expensive now. Likely still WAY better quality than Hyundai/Kia craptasms. Don't misunderstand me, fanboys, I'm also a big Mitsu supporter even with current shortcomings.This is, after all, the company that cared enough to bring us the Starion ESI-R, 3000 GT VR-4, Lancer Evo, etc. - a simply incredible (!) history of cutting edge tech, performance and styling that rivals and/or surpasses any other non-boutique major brand!
    Great and thoughtful review once again, I can tell you're a true car guy and care about quality everything...thanks for taking the time and effort. It really shows in your writing, delivery, cohesiveness and production values. Sorry for my long post, I just love to talk cars! Liked and subscribed! 👍

    Went to see one at dealer. I fell in love with the body but I found the interior very old style like this 2023 was a repeat of 2022, 2021 and so on. That was a major let down for me. But the body in red color has the wow factor. I really have mixed feelings but in a nutshell, I was a bit enthusiastic.

    • @overdrive_reviews

      I’ve never driven the Corolla Cross! Can’t really weigh in there. Toyota is a higher-quality product, most often, and has a higher resale value. They’re also generally more reliable. On the other hand, Mitsubishi has an incredible new car warranty - 10 year/100K miles. And you get a lot of bang for your buck as far as amenities, tech and AWD systems.

    Agree the radio tacky 1995 😃 for a company that knows electronics well. They should upgrade Tom Tom to 2022 model. A cheap recall would do it.

    Where did you get your mpg numbers? I see 25/26 and Mitsubishi says the seats are leather. You do great reviews but your irritations are not the norm as I owned many Mitsubishis and many luxury cars but I trust Mitsubishi vehicles for long drives as they are very reliable and very easy to maintain yourself.
    My beef is the EC. Competes with the Outlander ES price wise which makes no sense.
    Now the Sport competes price wise as well. Makes no sense.
    I always keep a Mitsubishi around for my everyday driver ... Simple and basic.

    From my experience the eclipse cross is insanely quiet , you barely hear the engine at all. You literally have to floor the pedal to hear the engine.
    It's definitely more quiet than a rav 4. It also has better acceleration than the corolla cross its competitor as well as the Honda hrv.
    0-100 in 8.6 seconds is good enough acceleration. This Is not meant to compete with a Ford mustang or other sport cars.
    Other nice touches are lights on the door handle, lights in the door pockets. It's a nice cool effect at night.
