As someone born in 2003, Nu-metal might be my favorite genre of music. I’m high school, our weights teacher would play a lot of Slipknot, Korn, and Linkin Park.
John Davis is the OG of nu-metal...I remember buying "Life is Peachy" on tape back in '96 and was blown away. Then, when Follow the Leader was released in '98...I couldn't believe KoRn was even more awesome.
I'm one of those old guys that has been a Korn fan since their first album hit stores when I was 18. I remember the numetal tag was brought in strictly to be insulting because elitist metal heads hated it and "rap-rock" didn't stick or even really make sense. They also insulted each other within the various metal types, like death metal fans hating on "sold out" Metallica and anything with some clean vocals or actual melodic guitar work being called crap. I'm glad now people just see numetal as another subgenre of metal, but as a guy who always enjoyed almost every type of metal throughout my life, I still don't like the term much.
I don't think Nu Metal is a bad thing to be called. Korn is Nu Metal. They came with a new sound and continued to build on it. They have always been at the top of that list and are way beyond the majority of others in the same sub genre. I don't consider Metallica to be a thrash band anymore. They left that behind in the 90s, but they still carry that label because they were one of the first and they are the biggest band to come from that sub genre. Korn is Korn, but they will always be labeled as a Nu Metal band. It should be a badge of honor, considering how many others are not around anymore.
I miss that era of music I haven't boughten much music since 05. I like that newish group polyphia though. Amazing technical ability catches my ears now.
Nu Metal is dope AF but I always saw Korn as just Metal. He SCREAMS, dude. HE SCREAMS. The guitars and drums are BRUTAL.
