  • With my channel name being "Garbage Trucks of San Jose", it'd only be a matter of time before I finally got the motivation to head towards West San Jose to find GreenTeam & West Valley trucks to film.
We got to West Capitol Expressway around 6AM and biked to the top of the city's famed Communications Hill neighborhood. Almost immediately we saw a lone Expert 2000 heading to the top of the hill, with Julio behind the wheel. Being that it was my main objective to find one, that's what we went for right off the bat. We stayed with him for a little over two hours before we left.
Biking down Azores Street to the bottom of the hill (which was in of itself a journey), we ran into one of the company's McNeilus ZRs with Daniel behind the wheel. Collecting at the Helzer Court Apartments, it's rightfully dubbed "Little San Francisco" by the locals, with its SF-esque houses, and steep streets. In the midst of filming that, we ran into one of West Valley's McNeilus Rear Loaders with Robert working on an order for the complex.
After that, we decided to head off and take care of some errands while we were in the area. In the process, we ran across another rear loader on a couple of residential orders with Jesse behind the wheel. Once we wrapped up with him, the McNeilus ZR from earlier came into the area, accompanied by one of the company's Labrie Automizers with Fernando behind the wheel. We wrapped it up after finishing with both trucks.
For those unfamiliar with San Jose zoning, here's the rundown. After 2007, Waste Connections (dba GreenTeam & West Valley) was given the responsibility of residential garbage & recycling collection in West San Jose, as well as designated multi-family dwellings, and certain government buildings. The city gave control of residential garbage and recycling in North, East, South, and Central San Jose to Garden City Sanitation (now also a Waste Connections affiliate) and California Waste Solutions respectively.

I love the variety they got, the dual arm Expert sure is something I did not expect to see, so that was great! I like how they keep it classic and keep the trucks White, the original Green Team scheme I remember from 2010! I honestly believe that they split the city in half and they were responsible for their own halves but makes sense now. Cart variety is neat, are they the only hauler that buys different vendors or how does that work? I definitely enjoyed watching this video!

with the way carts work, it used to be the city that bought the carts for the haulers but after a while, the companies began to buy their own carts (buying to city specs listed out in the contract with logo placement, colors, etc.). overall otto has a contract for a majority of the haulers, but I believe they also have an exclusive contract with garden city to produce 35 gallon otto classics even though they've technically been discontinued since 2017 (I think they're the last hauler anywhere I know still buying them)
the garden city yard buys IPLs for milpitas, greenwaste will occasionally buy rehrigs but they've since gone back to otto. green team will sometimes buy sierra, ssi schaefer and cascade but for the most part they're deadset on rehrig since that seems to be a waste connections thing

prevents a single company from having a monopoly over the entire city which has been an issue in the past

probably a couple months ago, they're keeping the GCS branding, but i think their drivers are beginning to transition to WC uniforms
