      My dad owns the soundtrack to all three movies on record. Even to this day, when I hear the opening themes to all three movies, I can just close my eyes and let the soundtrack highlight and enhance every mental image I can call up when thinking "Wild West".

    You're going to love "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." For a long time in interviews, Quentin Tarantino called it the best directed movie in history. In recent interviews, he just calls it the best movie ever made. I don't know about that, but it's certainly one of the best. You might want to follow the trilogy up with Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West," which is also a super-masterpiece.

    The morale of the story is "Money really does grow on trees." LOL. The "Hunchback" was played by Klaus Kinski, a pretty famous actor in the 70's and 80's. And Lee Van Cleef made his lead debut in this film, after being "the fourth bad guy on the right" in many 50's era Westerns on movie screens and TV. He has a major part in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, so be ready.

      @@S_047 He's right. Not only the editing, the composition of the music, and the reason behind the showdown are better and goes along with what Leone is trying to say with his movies. In fact the same 3 things happens with every movie. in the dollars trillogy you think is all about money and revenge. Later you find out that that is not the case. He suckered you in with his first trilogy just so he could make his second one. He didn't wanted to make more westerns, the genre he loved so much. He's a cinic. In once upon a time in the west he makes his characters dying archetypes not only for the real life old west but for the cinema version of it. The money hungry guys like Mr Morton kill guys like Frank, Harmonica and Cheyenne, like Clint, Van Cleef and Tuco. Not only that, guys like Mr Morton became the protagonists in the next films. In duck you sucker he uses the same setting in his final showdowns at the beginning of the film for something completely different (a rape scene, almost like a cruel joke). And in once upon a time in america there isn't even a showdown. The protagonist refuses to use the gun, the gun doesn´t even have a hammer.

      I'm with you. I saw this film at a drive-in a couple of years after it was first released. For me, this one is the best. The ethereal and haunting chime of the pocket watches, threading through the film, bound everything together. It wasn't all just about shooting up the countryside. There were positive motivators at play, like family ties, friendship and respect. I enjoyed the other two films and can definitely see why others like one of both or them better, but this one had me hooked the instant the chime started playing. I can remember the "early days" of Cable TV and spending an ENTIRE DAY with my dad, older brother, uncle and grandfather all sitting down one Saturday afternoon to watch all 3 Sergio Leon/Eastwood "Man with no name" movies. I was probably 8, 9 at the oldest, and outside of major sporting events (Super Bowl/World Series) it is the only time that all the "male family members" would spend the day in front of the TV together for more than 30min without arguing over what to watch.
    Mom, Aunt, and Grandmother spent the day mostly shopping and whatever they wanted. After making massive amounts of pop-corn and hot-dogs, and stocking up on drinks.... We didn't miss them for nearly 9hrs.
    God, it is still one of my fondest "childhood memories" because it was so rare for us to spend that amount of time together at one time. And as my grandfather owned 2 horses at the time, my brother and i couldn't WAIT to go over to his place in the next time to play cowboys "for real". (Grandpa also owned a couple of rifles, and a large track of land, so we got to pop off a few rounds as well.)
    And this was nearly 40 years ago, and I can still recall where people were sitting, the layout of furniture, some of the conversations that we had that day. It was almost "magical", and hearing the opening theme to THIS movie more than the others cause all those memories to come flooding back.

    Clint Eastwood's character in this trilogy always goes by a different nickname in each movie. In the first movie, the town's innkeeper, Silvanito, refers to him as "Joe," but it's never known if that's his actual name, or just a nickname conveying anonymity - "Average Joe." In this film, he goes by the alias "Monco," which means "one-arm," since he always keeps his gun hand hidden beneath his poncho. And in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Tuco refers to him as "Blondie," after his hair color. His actual name is never known, hence the "Man With No Name" title.

    • @herrzimm
      @herrzimm Před 2 lety +12

      @@mascan7905 - That was my understanding as well. Especially when you consider Van Cleef's characters between Dollars More and G/B/U are obviously different from each other.
      Outside of casting and production crews, there is really no "connection" between the 3 movies. And if you pay close attention, you can tell that technically Good/Bad/Ugly is supposed to be the "first" one if you base things off of Eastwood's character in the other two. It is where he finds his trademark "look", despite the other 2 movies coming out first.
      But at the same time, I can understand United Artists decision to market the movies as a "trilogy" for American markets. I mean, when you consider the fact that they are really "foreign films" more than anything else, and the fact that Eastwood's own career was kind of in "limbo"? Well, it makes sense after the success of Fistful that you would want to market the other 2 as part of a trilogy to get audiences in the seats.

    Two other great perfomances from Gian Maria Volonte (Indio in this movie) are 'A Bullet for the General' and 'Face to Face'. If you're delving into Spaghetti Westerns, those are two good ones to look for.

    Great, insightful reaction folks. I’ve seen these three movies (especially The Good The Bad And The Ugly) many, many times so I’m impressed by your first time insight into a fairly complex plot. Fistful I would give a 9 out of 10, this one a 9.5 just because of the inclusion of Lee Van Cleef (Col. Mortimer), and GBU a solid 10. One of my top 10 westerns, along with Leone’s other masterpiece, Once Upon A Time In The West. You have to watch that one. A dark and sad masterpiece with even more intense showdowns and betrayals.

    For reacting to this movie and the one before you’ve earned my sub. Very few reactors check out these old classics, and even fewer post videos with most of the moments. This series single handedly earned my sub.

    Recommendation for you to react: "The Evil Dead" (1981), great movie!

    The good the bad and the ugly is the best of the three along with the best soundtrack.
