    So powerful and so deep. One of the best psychological dramas I’ve ever watched.
    It was nice to finally peak into Iranian culture regarding cinematography. Will definitely watch more of Farhadi’s work.

    I think its hard for western audiences to understand this kind of movies because of the culture differences . for me this movie is much better than a separation

    • @ooooswain
      @ooooswain Před 8 lety +57

      Definitely but people just need to understand this is a different culture with different morals than us and if you can respect that this movie is absolutely wonderful. The overall message is something all cultures can relate to. Honesty isn't always the easy option but through lies and deceit you cause yourself and others much more pain and suffering. When elly asks that guy in the car ride why he separated from his wife he responds "A bitter ending is better than endless bitterness" that's a metaphor for truth vs lies. Look at the last lie told in this film. She lied to ellys fiance and told him elly didn't refuse to come. Now she has caused herself endless bitterness through guilt and her fiance endless bitterness cause he feels elly never loved him. If she would have told the truth it would have been a bitter ending. Unpleasant but it would be over and done with. Both of them could move on from that. Loved this film.

      The biggest difference between this movie and "a separation" is the fact that in "about Elly", you can blame someone for what has happened, and that is Golshifteh's character. In "a separation" no one is at fault. You can feel each character and their limitations. You can relate to why they behave the way they do. To me "a separation" is in another level.

    • @AliAli-rp3ge
      @AliAli-rp3ge Před 7 lety +21

      why its Golshifteh's character fault ? why its not Elly fault for accepting the invitation while she is engaged to someone els ? why its not elly Fiance fault because of his aggressive Character with his woman that made her look for a new Relationship? why its not everyone fault because they accepted some stranger woman thay know nothing about( even her name) to Join them? its not anyone in particular fault and in the same time everyone fault.

      There may have been an eligibility issue. The movie was originally released in Iran and film festivals in 2009, two years before A Separation. But for whatever reason, it didn't receive an American or British release until 2015, seven years after the film was made. And the way the Oscars work in this category is that countries elect a single film as their submission each year, so maybe it wasn't selected by Iran in 2009, or the nominating committee didn't like it (wouldn't be the first time they chose safe crap over something good).
      A Separation won big at Berlin, got a good studio pushing it for the Oscars, and had a groundswell of momentum. About Elly had to rely on the success of movies made years after it to even get a legal release in America.

    Excellent film. Tense and very genuine. Effective in its understatement. And great performances. I had put it in my Netflix que and by the time it arrived I forgot what it was about. So I was watching it with no sense of category. And I think that's the best way to see it because it doesn't really slip easily into a category. What I liked about it was the portrait of Iranian life and relationships, which I assume was genuine. It felt that way. I only have one question but it's a spoiler so I will find out later if my suspicions are correct.

    Ow Wow, I'm speechless, after I watched A separation which was a masterpiece, I thought it's hard to make a movie reach the same level, this movie did, I really don't think there is going to be a powerful movie like these two movies, btw these are the only three movies I've watched from Iranian Cinema, the truth is, I forgot its an Iranian movie after the first 2 min, I couldn't see the cameraman, I felt like I'm part of the people in these 3 movies, there is nothing like it. I have to admit, my all-time fav director is Christopher Nolan, but I have to admit,
    I didn't know Asghar Farhadi, and now both of these directors are my fav. I don't feel like I'm watching a movie, that's how intense each of these two movies was.

    I saw it. The climax was good, I wouldn't say its the best but it was good. However afterwards the whole film just felt like it was draggin just to fill up the minutes. Then the ending was bland. I would rate this film a 6-6.5/10. I have no idea why this film has such high ratings. All I saw was a group of adults panicking because someone drowned. After the panicking it was just "fuck it, shes dead, so who's gonna break the news to her family?" Then we learn that she was actually engaged and everyone freaks out and starts talking about honor and dignity for the dead and what not (frankly, i find it extremely unnecessary to stuff a 'gender bias issue' into the movie at this point, so what if she was engaged? she was unhappy with her fiance isn't it obvious she would want to find a new one?) If you take out the children and re-filmed this movie with the same characters but this time rather than having them be adults let them be around the age of 12-15, it would still yield the same results. Unlike what was said in the trailer, "a gripping psychological drama, a tense mystery", I almost fell asleep towards the end because it's just taking too dam long to convey the message. IF there is a hidden message in the movie please tell me because as far as I can tell, this movie is overrated.

      +0955interactive I see what you're saying but I think you've kind've missed the point. Farhadi did a great job of highlighting the difference between such an tragedy occurring in say the US and in the conservative country of Iran. See how in the beginning it all seemed quite similar but only in times of hardship are these core divergences revealed. Its a nuanced portrayal of a very terse, controversial subject.

      +0955interactive so that's rude and inconsiderate for people who haven't seen it. You need to understand this is a foreign film and their views on loyalty and marriage are very different from Americans. When you commit to marriage in this culture it's really looked down upon to be unfaithful. I thought the film was brilliant, powerful and some of the best acting I've ever seen. The whole message is that we don't always think of the consequences of our actions. Through lies and deceit we can cause ourselves and the people around us a lot of pain. If everyone in this movie was honest from the beginning all the violence and anger could have been avoided. In the end everyone had come clean and told the truth except the main girl. For all those that had come clean you can see the their aggression and suffering had lifted. But the girl told one last lie in the end to protect herself and as a result she continued to suffer. She was the only one who was still a mess at the end. Beautiful film and a wonderful message. Definitely one I will always remember.
