- Beginners to Carp Fishing are faced with a minefield of information both online with youtube videos and forums etc and in the magazines.
It’s easy to get confused with all this and mistakes can be made in one way or another which cost you fish. In this video I try to outline 5 of the most common mistakes and why they might ruin your session in the hope that you can avoid these mistakes and put more fish on the bank! I hope it helps!

One of the worst thing about carp fishing is the way anglers look down on beginners instead of helping them. Everyone needs to start somewhere.

I think the biggest mistake I made when starting out was over complicating my rigs and putting too much emphasis on rigs.
I tried every rig I could tie, thinking it was the key to success, when in fact it is only a small part of a large jigsaw.
A lot of the top anglers actually use very simple rigs, Steve Briggs is a great example of this, and there are very few people that can get close to his capture list.
Location is everything, the best all singing, all dancing, new fandango, spinning super rig can not catch fish that are nowhere near it
I did the same to be honest mate. I’m glad i’ve narrowed it down to a couple now
i agree with this i was using ronnie rigs and pop ups all sorts, could catch anything so my mate made me a pva mesh bag up on a simple hair rig and caught two carp in like an hour
Last year on my local water, which is a low stock large reservoir of around 65/70 acres with around 200 fish in, I had my best year ever using straight mono hook lengths.
Just 15 lb reel line tied directly to the hook with a palomar knot, 2 cm bit of shrink over ther eye and a figure of eight knot the other end for a quick clip.
The hair was 3 to 4 cm of soft braid tied to a rig rig which was stopped opposite the barb using a rubber stop.
Sometimes I'd slid a small float stop on the mono to mould putty around as well.
Used this rig over silt, gravel and sandy spots with a snowman hookbait and caught consistently all season.
Easy to tie and extremely cost effective.
Worth noting that in more snaggy conditions I would switch to a braid or coated braid hooklink.
Of course, I was on fish as much as possible and even cycled around late at night a couple of evening's before a session to find the fish.
This is only a starting point though as angling pressure and weather conditions will move the fish, but I could make a well informed decision as to where they were likely to end up if anything changed.

Proof in the pudding there nice 1! Noise is something ive tried to keep down over the years, lads turning up exited obviously but banging and crashing around with bivvy mallets and bbq's. Ive set up away from the commotion and caught a few times over the years even on the wrong end of the weather.

Thanks for the video. As a beginner to carp fishing I can see a few things I was doing that may not have been the best practices. Because of the video, I've changed my casting style and it has made a big difference with tangled rigs...

Good video Simon - we need to help and welcome new anglers into this sport.
I’d also add to this - try and be proactive and be prepared to move if needs be. It can be the difference between having a good session or blanking. Don’t be lazy guys 😉 it’s hard, I know but sometimes we’ll worth it. This also touches on your point about shovelling bait out and not wanting to move on to a better spot because all your buckets of bait are in front of you. You can add bait to a swim but not take it out and it’s very easy to blow your swim this way. I certainly was guilty of this at the start of my carp journey. Watercraft is key 👍🏼

Agree on over baiting, agree on keeping it simple my No1 rig depending on situation is the blow back rig on a clean lake bed with a longish hair no kicker tied to a Nash claw, 2nd is a bair choddy fished over weed, and for pop ups always a Ronni 👍
I see so people pull up to the lake and grab the closest peg to the carpark I wouldn't start a session on a lake without doing a few laps first unless I find fish on my first couple of laps great video as always simon love your vlogs

As an angler who is returning to Carp angling after a 20 year break, i often found that one of the biggest mistakes anglers make, is taking way too much gear with them. This can stop you from catching fish, as you are a lot less likely to get up and move once you have set all your gear up.
Secondly, it is reading 100's of articles about which rig works best, a good simple bottom bait rig and a pop up rig will get you started and catch you fish. Once you are more confident, and understand your venue/venues more, then you can make the finer adjustments.

Good subject matter; I would add that it is important to check your hook before every cast. If there is any burring visible of if you can feel roughness when you run your fingers toward hook point and if it doesn't feel needle sharp on your finger you will struggle to hook fish! Carefully sharpen or change hook/rig. Tight linesguys

Great video Simon. Great for beginners and also good for seasoned anglers who need a reminder of those simple mistakes! What app do you use for the weather? Also do you use an app for the moon phases....currently I have a printed A4 moon phase calendar on my office wall but be good if there was a tried and trusted app! Keep up the good work fella.
Superb tips for people comming into angling. Another tip try an get an understanding to what your fishing over features etc depth... understanding different hook patterns for different rigs for different lakes etc..

Really good video Simon, I like this alot and definitely seen some of these mistakes you've talked about! But the most common thing I see with new angler's is a total lack of fish care eg standing up while handling there captures for a photo which is a no no! Not having unhooking mats or fish care products and placing the carp on the ground just in the net! Makes me so annoyed! Tight lines and wet net's everyone!

I think seeing beginners trying to run befor they can walk is quite common. Also getting disheartened after a couple of blanks. Carp fishing is difficult and there is an endless amount to learn so patience and being willing to learn and make mistakes is important.

Not been mobile, its ok to get on the fish to start with but they can and do move off and far to many ppl will not move to another part of the lake on to showing fish. Just because you may have had one fish from the peg you started in does not necessarily mean you will get more.

Simon Dew Carp Fishing Jesus! Do you have any tips for me as I keep loosing fish due to I fish a lead on the reeds and I get them hooked and they rush into the reeds and I don’t know how to play the drag verry well yet. Do you onow any tips for me to get them out of the reeds quick enough
@@joshplays3494 hi there.. If I understand what you are asking in your question is you are hooking fish and they doing you all time by getting into the reeds and snags.. If so and you pick a swim like this and fish tight to a snag like reeds etc.. You should try adjust your baitrunner tension on the rear of the reel.. Tighten it right up and sit close to your rods and for your clutch for a playing fish I would also tighten this up until you have pulled a fish away from any reeds or snags.. Knowing how much tension to set this while playing fish will come with practice

Totally agree with all you say,but nowadays the lakes seem to be so rammed that you have to take the only swim that's available.
This is the sad truth mate it's often hard to get on the fish. I try to fish mid-week if I can and head to quiet corners with less pressure

This sounds common sense to most I’m sure but setting up bivvies etc and bank sticks etc using a mallet. The vibrations and noise will clear your swim pretty quickly.
Bobbin choice is a biggie too, if you’re fishing in close (lighter bobbins) further than 60+ yds (heavier bobbins) otherwise you’ll have bow tight lines in close with heavy bobbins in close which will cut the fish off.
Biggest one I’d say is getting caught up in all the latest rigs, you’ll confuse yourself and end up not enjoying your trip …

Great vid. One of the biggest mistakes I see is whacking in bivvy pegs and just generally being really noisy. That may be ok on a big pit but on most lakes that’s any carp gone from the swim. Also fish the margins as they are often the most productive areas.

Location, location, location.
The best rig in the works is useless if not presented to feeding fish. Keep rigs simple, use bait carefully (you can’t take it out of the lake, but you can always add more to the swim) and be prepared to move.

Biggest mistake most people make is tying the wrong knott.

I would agree with Patrick as a beginner myself i went from having alot of my hooks fall off on a take, to a bait not presenting aswell as it should be. Knot tying is defenetly something ive been working alot on

Great video mate! I'm on a hard lake it's 10acres and very weedy. You got any advice? Fish are pretty big and know what they're looking for when it comes to hook bait.
Try solid bags with a wafter it can be good on weedy waters 👍
using floaters can really help to locate fish few in different pegs.

great video but the music was a tad loud when your speaking but cracking vid also a bit of advice to the noobs when casting out dont let your lead and bait hit the lake slowly feather it down cause a)its a huge splash if not and b)that big splash can annoy people if there doing it over and over again.
A very good video for the beginner but what annoys me is not being stealthy and quiet when 2 mates fishing next to each other in adjacent swims keep walking back wards and forwards to chat and as soon as I see a mallet come out say no more
John Hanson totally agree mate. I understand people go fishing for different reasons and there’s a time and place for a social session as long as it doesn’t affect others

@@michaelleneghan7431 Have you tried the screw in type pegs? I find if you can bang a peg in you can screw these into the ground. Obvously not if its solid gravel or similar, but i don't know of many standard tent pegs that will go in there. Also sometimes just have to accept a pegs only half way into the ground.
Very true John the thing I always try and avoid as well when reeling in is skipping the lead over the surface all the way in. I think it just like drawing a big arrow telling the fish where you are.

When starting a session at your chosen lake/swim, when would you decide to spod or not? I’m always nervous about doing so most of the time because I’m scared ofspooking any carp in the area. So, generally I start my session by firing out a dozen or so boilies around my hook bait & try to get a feel for what’s happening (do I get a bite!) for the first 2 to 3 hours. Is that fair or should I be more positive in the benefits of spoding from the off, if I felt the conditions were right to do? Ps; My general spod mix is: hemp, maize, pigeon conditioner & either some tigers or mix sizes of boilies and/or pellet.

HeyHo Deco hi cheers for your comment. It’s really dependant on the lake you’re fishing. Some lakes respond well to spodding and others it can switch the fish off. It always pays to be cautious at first and avoid spodding at bite times like early morning or last light. I’d probably look into the stock of the lake. If it’s heavily stocked then spodding can work as the fish compete for food. I’d still start lightly with maybe 10 spods until you get a bite. Other waters like large reservoirs where the fish are spread out you can spod an area to draw them in. It’s all about reading the situation you’re faced with 👌

My local 10 acre lake, which I've been fishing for 18 months or so, has 120-150 head of carp(?) to 25lb and 9 times out of 10 I just use a light scattering of boilies around my hook bait and this year I've been doing okay. By that I mean, although I've been catching 1 or 2 carp in my 10-14hr sessions (3 on occasions), I've had enough blanks along the way to keep me humble. Those blanks make me believe I could be doing more to, not only attract carp to my spot, but keep them there! Where I'm at with baiting at the moment is exactly as you've detailed above. I decided on this approach from watching ALL your previous videos, my session results and good old trail & error. My last two sessions on my lake: first day blanked, no spodding. Next day, no bites in first 3hrs, spodded out 6 spombs, landed a beauty within the hour! As you say, all lakes are different (as are the days fishing them!) & I think mine is best to start gently at first, then if no joy, spod! Why not, I've got two chances!
Thanks again for your videos Simon & the hard work that goes into making them, much appreciated my friend. For me, watching them is like going to carp school, reinforcing & confirming basics (which in itself is a confidence booster) and introducing your ideas and tactics when approaching a new water or session.

I use a website called netweather mate it's not an app but you can save it to your home screen for your area so get straight to your local weather really quick 👌

Mistakes not leaving drag on reels.Lake I fish rods have flown in the water they haven't got them back.Making noise asswell can spook carp.Alsoif you've seen carp in area don't have the idea they will stay there for a while they may move quite soon

Can you explain to me about rigs landing in a heap as apposed to a solid bag where the lead is on top of the hook bait?
Plug E the lead shouldn’t be on top of the bait with a solid bag but next to it on the bottom 👍

I understand that but once settled on the lake bed there can’t be a vast amount of difference between the two , they are both near the lead or am I missing something?
Plug E it depends on the type of hooklink you use. I use a semi stiff braid with a balanced bait so the rig lays out flat away from the lead. A solid bag uses a very short supple hooklink so it’s near the lead and doesn’t move far before the fish hits the weight of the lead. Solid bags are good over weed and for casting extreme ranges etc. My semi stiff type rigs are good over harder bottoms like gravel and clay etc. It’s all about being adaptable to the situation really 👍

Any advice on how you handle catching fish at the same time e.g. playing / landing first fish and second rod goes?
Unless you have a mate with you, there's not a lot you can do, just land the first fish and hope the second is still on. Luckily this doesn't happen too often

Yep you're right mate it's already a problem on lots of lakes with massive algal blooms and oxygen crashes causing fish kills. Hopefully angling pressure starts to drop off a little as we go into autumn and the fish get a rest 👍

Haha that's what the tackle companies want you to think but a cheap rod and reel will catch just as many carp as the most expensive in most situations
Could you do a video on how to properly play carp when they’re approaching snags please? I’m always reluctant to pull hard and stop their movement, but I’ve been bollocked for giving the fish line, yet the guy won’t show or tell me how to actually do it. He just says “give up now”. So frustrating
That's a tricky one as every carp fights differently and each situation has it's own challenges. I'd say make sure you're fishing safely in the first place i.e not too close to the snags, fish locked up and be on your rods as soon as you get any indication!
