Yun Overview - Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike [4K]

  • Yun shares the title of "strongest" along with Chun-Li. Genei-Jin is an insane super that briefly turns Yun into an unstoppable combo machine, and can be used multiple times per round. The only thing that keeps him in check is how hard he is to optimise.

    Yun's a prime example of how giving a character less health doesn't really do much to balance them if they have several other amazing things about them. I think Yun ties for the lowest health in the game but it doesn't matter much if he confirms into a Genei Jin combo, does nearly 50%, and is halfway to another Genei Jin barely three seconds later.

    • @ryandeopante5317
      @ryandeopante5317 Před rokem +27

      Gouki is the lowest. Also getting 50% or depends on how the combo is started. Confirming in SA3 with a special move heavily scales the damage and leads most Yun's to opt for a reset to build meter. If the Yun doesn't get the optimal post SA3 meter build, a solid player can easily take advantage of Yun's footsies and low health until next activation.

    • @Glarfugus
      @Glarfugus Před rokem +12

      Health goes a long way to balancing him. It's a saving grace that high damage characters can kill him in 2 openings. Akuma is a similar story, he would easily be top tier if he didn't have such low health.

      Another issue is his fast falling speed and small hurtboxes. While akuma also has very low health he also has slow fall speed and hurtboxes that make it very easy to land high damage combos on him. On top of that, yun has the quickest wakeup timings along with yang and dudley so it limits the other characters' oki.

    @Shodokan123 Před rokem +4

    Thanks for showing love to 3s making the content you are currently. As a yun main I appreciate the video and hope it makes some people want to play the character however there are some things that should be addressed. You are absolutely right that the skill ceiling is limitless however the skill floor is also quite high compared to nearly every other character in the game. Yun is a rabbit hole of a character.
    Yun isn't on the same tier as chun, while hes top 3 some would even argue that ken surpasses yun. Hes unfortunately relatively under represented especially compared to the rest of the "top 5" characters and even some below that. He takes too much damage and you can hardly make mistakes with him especially in some of the more snowbally matchups.
    1. Yun being considered harder is not because he requires optimization (maybe just a miscommunication/wording) but rather because he lacks safety in many scenarios compared to his high tier counterparts. Yun defensively is quite poor compared to many other characters (especially on okizeme) and can require relatively large risks to make the most of things at times.
    Yun requires immense situational knowledge in regards to nearly everything in his toolkit to be used properly (from simple divekick followup interactions to varying combo routes based on many factors in addition to character specific routes). Theres a reason you see very few yuns, mostly because the effort required to get the same results are skewed against yun compared to other characters and the knowledge requirements to even play him at a mid/competent level is much higher. Geneijin is extremely strong but to use it well takes a lot of time investment and understanding of a lot of the finer details of the character and geneijin's functionality itself. Yun is less and less oppressive the more knowledge you have of the game and the character, hes very much a knowledge check character up until a certain point/skill level.
    2. Divekicks are not safe more often that not and put the opponent in an advantageous position RPS wise in many cases, however that requires the opponent understands how to deal with them properly (knowledge check). If an opponent has no idea how to properly defend against them other than trying to parry every single one they're going to have a bad time though. While its possible divekicks are going to be able to be done to be +5-10 on block using divekicks in a way that gets you the results you want is its own skill that can take a long time to properly master compared to other iterations of the twins like in the SF4 series or compared to other types of divekicks for other characters/games. Aiming for "perfect" divekicks all the time is a good way to lose as they are some of the most consistently parried and punished.
    3. Shoulder is only psuedo safe as there are a few situations where it can be hard punished and your turn is at least over afterwards if they are blocked. The way they gets used more often than not is to try to give safe activation which is in truth a very risky thing to do the higher in "skill" you get at the game as strings/situations that lead into it are easily parryable as all shoulders are blue parries outside of EX. Many shoulders are simply able to be reacted to from players doing them from "greedy" positions that are too far away (like perfect max distance) and not being used as a means to stop specific movement decisions from the opponent pre-emptively. Shoulder has a lot of risk vs reward behind it even if its "safe" on block in most situations.
    4. Yun's specials are defining however not something that he necessarily "shines" for. Zesshou (dash punch) is EXTREMELY hard to make safe and requires a 13 frame hit confirm from his crouching MK to reliably get this from a low attack (outside of c lk x 2 confirm which is actually quite difficult compared to other characters due to the c lk chain/cancel functionality compared to someone like ken) otherwise to use this it must be done from a link combo or LP-LK-MP Target Combo though it does get good followups for much of the cast if you hit with it. Shoulder was already covered above. Upkicks are poor as they are not invuln and are not a good anti-air choice, these are mostly used in combos or during geneijin enders. Zenpotenshin is his most defining move just as it is yang's as opening your opponents up is easier since this command grab cannot be teched and you get a combo into okizeme/setplay off of it (You do cover this).
    5. Yun's normals in geneijin do not win every trade situation. While its a general rule of thumb that its "yun's turn" after a trade for most of the cast theres still plenty of instances where thats not true. Any trade that occurs and the opponent has a 3 frame or faster option that is not a throw will be able to combo off of the trade. An example of this is ken, if you trade geneijin normal into his super or EX dp ken can do either a LP or EX dp off of the trade as a combo. There are also some trades where characters like hugo can just SPD/Super yun as well, chun can c lp > super... you get the idea.
    6. Yun is best played as a control character. While his mixups and rushdown can be strong his defining characteristic is how his tool set plays into controlling pace and position until he can best take advantage either with geneijin or with setplay from specific types of knockdowns (character specific). Playing him safely and in most cases optimally isn't just rotating through RPS scenarios like some might believe, while he can snowball games off of a few mixups most of the cast can do so as well (dudley, yang, ken etc) and many of his mixups require a lot of risk and commitment. For a mixup/rushdown character games can more often than not be a lot slower paced than it may seem (at least at the higher level of play, especially in specific matchups).
    If you plan to do more than overviews for characters and you'd like some extra help for yun you're welcome to reach out on twitter or discord.

    As a crap yun player I just wanted to highlight that the people making genie jin so good are the top players. To do these horrendously nasty combos (and getting meter back) takes extreme skill and knowledge per character like mentioned in the video. Also genie jin allows you cancel things that shouldn't really be cancelled, you can double kara moves and maybe even triple kara moves to do crazy shit. Example is the kara command throw (must be done super quick while in genie); Med punch~lk~zenpou+mk/hk grants you exceptional grab range. True kara palms needs a double cancel too. Mk launch into genie jin is cancelling mk into superjump into genie jin (pretty safe activation even if the mk is blocked) and I can't do this still. This method and the classic 1,2,3 punches into genie dont activate damage reduction properly so the damage output is crazy high, I dont think any other leading combos permit this low level damage reduction.

    Third Strike needs to be re-released, but not the Online Edition. We need a "Perfect Edition" that includes the gameplay balancing of Third Strike, with the ability to choose character specific storylines in Arcade mode and have ALL the stages from Second Impact and New Generation (some of those stages were creative and beautiful and im a sucker for them). Music too from the previous games included would be ace.
    The only thing that sucks about FightCade is how you are locked to your opponent's character's stage all the time. Which is especially boring when the same characters pop up, so you're stuck with the same stages and music.
    If there was this mythical "Perfect Edition" ever released, Capcom I would pay the full price day one.
