I appreciate the 5 minutes of Seth being anxious about "drawing a card" from an empty library during a shared fate video
Yeah, I should have thought that through before worrying so much lol
We played Shared Fate with Leveler in Type 2 back when Mirrodin came out, you know
You can't lose from drawing from an empty library while Shared Fate is on the battlefield since Shared Fate replaces your draw (at no cost).
5 mana enchantment that needs this much setup is classic against the odds 👌🏻
Shared Fate is an Against the Odds classic.
My favorite part of these videos is when opponent says "It's Modern time!" and Moderns a turn 2 Karn into play.
Frequent turn 2 "I win the game" plays is exactly why I don't play modern anymore. That, and Modern Horizons.
Stupid monkey
I wonder how many opponents facepalm as soon as they see they have matched up with SaffronOlive. They are queuing up for serious hard-hitting modern games…and end up looking into the dark mirror that is Shared Fate. Love this stuff!
I'm pretty sure the answer to "You're matched against SaffronOlive. Do you facepalm?" is always YES!
I'd be thinking "nice, free win probably"
@@Esper_Compleat I love it when he wins though!
@@Esper_Compleat In Arena if you play a couple copies of Gaea's Blessing, you tend to autowin some games.
If I saw my opponent was SaffronOlive my thought would be “I have no idea what’s about to happen, and I’m excited”
Now THIS is some honest-to- goodness old school against the odds. Nostalgic and stupid, just how I love it
Good Lord Seth. I am still trying to emotionally process the jank that crawled across my screen. 0/5 is a proper against the odds score. This was inspired, even for you. GGs WP!
45:10 you could've pushed the borrower right there - you had revolt due to fetching earlier in the turn
23:00 if you mystical dispute the inquisition, they will probably get baited into paying, since they can, losing them the opportunity of holding up double counterspell. Your damnation would have resolved and you might possibly stand a chance
You can't mill out with Shared Fate on the battlefield because the draw gets replaced. You only lose if you try to draw from an empty library, not simply for having one.
Also, game 2 match 3, seems like you should mystical dispute the inquisition. You aren't spending that mana on anything else, and there's a chance they pay for it or counter back.
100% agree
Lol, good call.
I also feel like countering the Brazen Borrower would have been worth it. As you said they had enough treasures to make it less effective so making them use two of them and a counter spell while you had the chance might have been fine.
I have to wonder if a discard heavy deck would be an interesting way to go here. Consider that Shared Fate doesn't draw you cards, it just lets you cast them from face down exile. An opponent who can only cast your discard effects would have drawn a dead card, effectively. I wonder if shared fate would fit into an 12 rack style shell.
Just have to make sure your opponent doesn’t get any Rack or Waste Not effects. Discard with no win conditions!
You would play 8 rack without the racks, you have shared fate as a win con. You just need the discard.
Mindstab would be my first inclusion. Saff is constantly agonizing about what might still be in his opponent's hand when Shared Fate comes down. Why not clear that puppy out?
Oops. I misread the listing for Mindstab. I remember never paying the mana cost back in the day, so it didn't register that Mindstab isn't like a reverse Ancestral Visions. It actually HAS a mana cost and therefore is less impressive than I was thinking. Still, setting up a few turns early and potentially scaring an opponent into misplaying a counterspell seems fine.
I want to see a white black version with dranith masitrath
I can't remember the last time an Against the Odds deck went 0/5. These are some of the most entertaining games
Especially when it’s 0-5 while also winning games
Welp, that’s what I get for reading the comments during the intro lol. I guess I won’t watch this video.
@@Crunchatize_Me_Senpaiwhy not? Seth is so good in these videos, the fact that he doesn't win in the video just makes it even better
@@GamingNinja999 It’s just because I know how it’s going to end now, and 0/5 tells me the deck probably never does its thing. My fault for reading the comments.
@@Crunchatize_Me_Senpaiit does do its thing. 0/5 in sets but did win games
48:20 Seth repeatedly scared to death of decking with an unkillable shared fate in play 😆
You do know Boseiju, Who Endures can target an opponent's Golos right?
If he had tutored two golos out of the deck with the betrayals then boseiju their golos they had no way to win anymore
they could win with emrakul
I sent Seth a Shared Fate deck when the poll went live. It actually got some wins in my local modern haha. It uses restore balance and borderposts as an early lock.
I do love Restore Balance. Sounds sweet.
@@MTGGoldfish thanks! I'd love for you to check it out!
I had an idea to try to break the symmetry of Shared Fate using the Aftermath cards from Amonkhet.
Opponents can cast the front half, and we can cast the back half.
Win condition would be Eternal Scourge, since we can cast from exile.
Just wasn't strong enough for Modern.
Watching you be forced to play "Monkey, may I?" was rough.
I remember when Ghazban Ogre and Savannah Lions were the strongest one drops in the format.
Well, time to go yell at the clouds since I'm old.
I've had this card sitting in my binder for AGES, I've always wondered if it could be made playable. Kudos to you for digging up such an old Against the Odds card. Can't wait to watch this video.
A buddy of mine built a vintage deck with Shared Fate back when it came out. Once he got first turn Shared Fate and then Time Twister. The look on his opponent's face was hilarious.
Hey Seth @MTGGoldfish!! Last match you didn't need to worry about milling out!! Shared fate replaces the draws so you cannot lose because you never tried to draw from an empty library, you would try to exile from an empty library , which is not a problem
Had same thought. Kinda hoped he empty library and go 'oh'.
Maybe I was missing something but why did he never boseiju the golos?
known second golos in opponents hand
One thing about this series, is the lists are always so well tuned. No matter how janky, it always feels like a well constructed deck
In the last game would you have actually lost when your library hit 0? "Rule 104.3c: "If a player is required to draw more cards than are left in his or her library, he or she draws the remaining cards, and then loses the game the next time a player would receive priority." There was no drawing going on, and you weren't doing it from your own library anyway.
Or would your opponent have lost when your library hit 0? Rule 704.5b:"If a player attempted to draw a card from a library with no cards in it since the last time state-based actions were checked, he or she loses the game."
What a wild ride. Your skill astounds me, honestly. I'm sure I'd get stomped piloting this deck, but it looks so fun.
I saw this card when I was digging through my old cards. Love seeing it played here!
I built a deck like this a super long time ago. At work now, so unfortunately I can't watch yet. Can't wait to see how you did it and how well it worked.
The thought I had was to lean into the fact that you need the right colors to cast the spells exiled with Shared Fate. If you just play 5c good stuff with a lot of multi-colored cards, like a Niv-Mizzet deck or something, most of your spells will be out of color and uncastable for them anyway, so you get to play "real" spells and they still won't draw anything useful most of the time. Sure it makes the downside of sometimes giving them something useful to do much more real, but it gives the massive upside that you can actually win the game off of your own deck.
Good to see this style of deck coming back after all this time i also built a shared fate sinking ship when this card was released.
45:00 Nooooooo you could have casted the fatal push with revolt on your turn off the fetch you thinned with when they end step flashed the brazen borrower!! (Out of context, that sentence sounds wildly hilarious)
I just got the biggest smile. This was my first ever built modern deck. Its like og lantern
This makes me so happy, when I was in college I had a bad kitchen table shared fate leveler combo deck. It was pretty hilarious.
You have an amazing job, coming up with such masterpieces
I've been waiting so long for this, my only modern deck is a shared fate deck.
Cut // Ribbons is my spicy addition to cards your opponent can't use. I play wheels to both empty their hand and fill mine. I love your take!
now this is classic Against the Odds. Well Done.
I think there's a one drop that can compete with Rags and it was printed in the same freaking set. (Dragons Rage Channeler, my word...)
Interesting v2 of this deck, this really brings back memories of when you did two part Against the Odds videos one for deck tech and one for games.
When do we revisit Azor’s Elocutors?
This is the God tier content that makes me watch goldfish; modern
51:00 it sounds like you're worried about decking out, but shared fate is a replacement effect, you only die if you draw from an empty deck, and you've replaced all draws with exiling cards, so all that happens when your deck gets empty is your opponent runs out of your mediocre gas. You were also considering dashing ragavan earlier, which would have been a mistake. Dashing the monkey would have given it back to your opponent.
In commander i once had an opponent cascade into inevitable betrayal and take a It that betrays out of my deck. Flavour win, game loss.
Real OGs remember the Original against the odds shared fate deck!
One of my favorite control finishers in super casual EDH since then!
This is one of my favorite cards of all time. I used to play it in casual rooms on mtgo. I would make a useless singleton deck and use tainted pack to mill my whole deck the turn before i did shared fate. The deck was meh but really fucking fun
I remember playing this deck back in the day when he made a against the odds/budget magic list for it
I saw that Stuffy Doll won the poll and was pretty sad cause I really wanted to see Shared Fates, thanks for doing it still!
Shared fate did matter in that second game in match 1 because it gave you the bounce land needed to put otwara back to your hand!
Hmm, good point!
Brewed a deck like this long ago. one of the all-stars was jace, vryn's prodigy since it returns to it's owners control when it flips. Also when it loots, you can't discard cards from exile so its entirely possible to set it up so it just taps to draw a card.
I have been working on a commander version of this deck for over a decade. It was a joke deck made because my friends were tired of my jank shenanigans. It almost made them quit. I call it my Kim Jong Un-Eye deck with Garth as commander. It's tutors, mana rocks, leveler, ways to cheat in Omniscience and Enter the Infinite. Play my deck for free. Reconstitute with Feldon's Cane and play about 50 of my opponents cards using Shared Fate after. Also an extra turn. It's definitely a Juche deck.
Hey great deck! I love shared fate and the little tricks you included are really cool. I have a suggestion though (if you ever played this deck again lol) Spellskite is a perfect fit, it helps protect your setup and can block early game aggro decently, but your opponent cannot use it to win the game since it has 0 power. I really liked it in my shared fate deck I had years ago. This makes me want to build a commander deck around it but im afraid it might be too mean/annoying for commander haha
I would give anything to watch you play a Commander deck built around Shared Fate. Please Lord
It's finally here!!!!!! The mad lad finally let democracy fail and is giving the people what he know we deserve. Yay Shared Fate vid.
You know, i feel like trying this deck with the amulet package isn't the worst idea
Actually would be pretty clever. Arboreal Grazers have 0 power so are non-threatening and Dryad of the IG is a 2/4 so if your opponent plays 1 themselves later on, they just bounce off each other in combat.
Oh, that's genius... but did you really win with shared fate?
@@derrickthewhite1 I mean, isn't the whole idea to turbo it out?
Just don't have any of the amulet win cons lol
@@ooberazn13 Fair enough. Actually, can it be used as a fun bit of tech even with the win cons? Primeval titan pulls out of their deck... which means no valacut unless they draw it, and you're presumably dumping your hand on the board really quickly.
@@derrickthewhite1you gotta win faster than getting hit with a 6/6 trample is the hard part there. Using their deck (assuming we can get to that point lol) to out speed that is certainly not guaranteed
One thing I would change about this deck is adding Time twister type cards. The draw seven is really powerful to clear out the opponent's hand after Shared Fate is played so that they're only getting bad cards while you get the good cards that might have been in their hand or graveyard. Another thing I like to do is play spells that put cards into the library as opposed to killing or returning to hand. This stalls out the opponent while letting you net the gains if you drop Shared Fate quickly enough.
29:45 "Lets thin our deck for the opponent" XD
This was great
A tutor that can get any card from a deck built to only have cards that can't win the game feels like some kind of profound meditation on the futility of existence.
Used to play shared fate in a dragons storm deck because of dragon storm is worded (it allows to fech a dragon from our starting deck.
Restore Balance would have been a great fit for this deck. Greater Gargadon will still work as a win con for you, but not them. Another cool piece of tech for this deck is Tolaria West since it transmutes into the suspend spells. With As Foretold, it's not hard to have spare mana lying around. -4 Rhino, -4 Sprawl +3 Balance, +2 Garagon, +3 Cantrips/Interaction. Run it back!
"I guess you could argue mana dorks are better than Ragavan"
Ragavan honestly is a mana dork. Which makes me wonder why deathrite is still banned since the monkey is also a non green situational mana dork with two other abilities that can hit for two a turn.
It's probably to slow now, but I have a large amount of love for my Gal Noble Hierarch as a 1 drop. A multi colored mana dork with exalted. It doesn't hold a candle to the monkey now, but its my person Tier 1 one drop.
Yeeeesss! Thank you for giving Shared Fate a chance, Seth!
I remember you playing this deck years ago, like around 5-7 or so
Dude that deck is siiiick i love it!!
Thanks!
24:22
best 1 drop arboreal grazier
no question!
The last game of the fist match seemed pretty winnable... You could boseiju early opps golos, and also used the tutor for another golos after he killed yours.
Really interested in this timeless amulet deck. Anyone have a list for it?
M1 our deck gets countered by an opponent playing even worse deck
Amulet of Vigor really should eat a ban in Modern. That is some Legacy/Vintage power level bullshit.
As a UB Mill player, I literally devour the souls of Ammy players. Even crushed one's dreams after he sideboarded x3 Endurance and Emrakul lol
No it shouldn’t lol there are much better cards. It also just completely folds against any artifact removal
Would love to see One With Nothing in this list!
Is there a world where shared fate works in a removal + discard deck instead of the as foretold package?
24:25 When looking for a better one drop you might want to look at the power 9
My buddy had a Shared Fate deck back in the day that would play Leveler too Exile his deck then drop the Fate to force his opponent to play his nonexistent deck instead. Trolly, but fun
Does set up a hard lock with draneth magistrate
Couldn't you blow up Golos with Boseiju since it's an artifact creature? Or is that considered a bad use of that card?
Remember that time As Foretold one and Seth basically just built a tier 1 deck?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
I don't understand why when Seth has an As Foretold and an Ancestral Visions in his first hand, with blue mana available, (or any 1 mana suspend card with mana available) he doesn't suspend the card immediately, and he waits to cast it on turn 3 with the As Foretold. By the time he casts As Foretold he would be casting the suspend card from exile anyway.
Yay Seth is back, been missing you
Match was absolutely a moral victory for this glorious jank pile
What about a shared fate deck full of discard spell that area good Early but useless in the late? And also kroxa as a finisher since it can’t be escaped by opponents
This makes me think of my codie deck in pioneer where I use true polymorph to turn someone's creature into codie so they can't cast permanent spells.
I desperately wanted to see Seth hit zero cards in library with Shared Fate only to realize that means his opponent REALLY doesn't get to play the game anymore.
I've wanted you to play a good shared fate deck for so long; you managed to play a bad Shared Fate deck in two videos now.
Things that are important for Shared Fate: Mana Flexibility, Staying Alive, Deck does not contain cards that work against Shared Fate.
Here's a good one, if you ever consider doing a third video, Wall of Denial and Supreme Verdict go a long way to make Shared Fate playable.....
Artifact: Temple Bell 4, Chromatic Lantern 3
Enchantment: Tamiyo's Compleation 2, Sprit Link 4, Ghostly Prison 3, Annex 2, Mirror Mockery 4, Shared Fate 4
Instant: Ethereal Haze 2, Dream Fracture 3
Creature: Wall of Denial 4, Supreme Verdict 4
Land: Exotic Orchard 4, Glacial Fortress 4, Hallowed Fountain 4, Island 4, Plains 5
Why do you have a ‘league record’ stat, when match 2 is the 4th stage of a league, match 4 is in the 2-player queues, and match 5 is in a whole new league?
45:06 You did have revolt here you know.
Since shared fate is a replacement effect, wouldnt the concern of milling out be mitigated?
This deck could run kaheera for free as another way to win the game. Probably would be pretty good
You might have been able to survive the Ragavan snowball if you used mystical dispute on it. You'd have to hope for your opponent paying for it but still worth the long shot.
You could run Kaheera, if I'm not mistaken it's completely free in this deck
This was a good against the odds
Thanks!
Very interesting deck, although the modern meta today seems to be miserable.
Very fun deck, even if it was kinda awful. But honestly, one thing this deck did was make me want to see what the best As Foretold deck in modern looks like.
Needs Teferi's Puzzle box
My lacrosse coach beat with this deck last year and I can confirm it was a painful experience even thinking about it makes me angry.
Tutoring for a land hurt me so bad seth.
I played shared fate before in 2 different ways, 1, with bribery and cards like it, another was a punisher style deck, both cannot do anything after shared fate is on the table
In Match 5, he could have pushed the Brazen Borrower, as he had cracked a fetch earlier in the turn.
28:05 The opponent missed their land drop last turn on purpose, so they could get 2 landfall triggers off Tireless Tracker this turn
Would it maybe be worth running the cascade cards like shardless agent, since when the opponent plays them it would still exile cards from their own deck (and likely be less useful than the cascade payoffs in our deck)
I went back and forth on Shardless. I had it in the deck at first, but then i was worried about the opponent cascading into an answer to Shared Fate in their deck, although maybe that's not likely enough to really matter.
@@MTGGoldfish Fair enough! Love the vids btw ;)
PSA: shared fate means you actually can't lose to decking out, because you will never "draw a card from an empty library"
No way you put crashing footfalls into a "harmless" deck 😂
I think this deck needs Mindstab.
(edit: I thought for a moment that Mindstab was the exact inverse of Ancestral Vision, but it actually HAS a mana cost. Still, this hand-destroyer would not be out of place in this deck.)
It's nice to revisit old against the odds.
Oh and Seth there's only one 1 drop in magic that's better than the monkey and no it's not a mana dork, it's sol ring.
And really that's it.
Well ok fine... Ancestral recall.
So 2 of them.
Well ok fine mana vault.
But really no other.
There's amulet.. is it really better though? Not really? Same tier maybe but slightly lower...?
First, where are your pain lands?
Second, where are your dredge and flashback cards? 4 Darkblast are probably better than 8 4 mana sorcery speed board wipes. (Dredge replaces the the draw of Shared Fate)
Thada Adel and Bronze Bombsheell are some pretty spicy ladies to include in this deck. Your opponent can't play the bombshell because the state based trigger will cause it to be sacrificed, and Thada will only find the garbage. I'd only do a 1 of for Thada since we don't want our opponent to have a way to deal damage to us.
I prefer the borderposts for mana fixing over utopia sprawl because of the pain lands allowing for some accelerated play.
Temporal Mastery and Vanishment are good miracle cards. In fact vanishment would have got you the Emrakul.
I will need to add the green splash for channel abilities.
Honestly, I'd drop the gimmicky As Foretold // Yahenni's and use these other cards -- especially since you have rhinos in it.
I do like the Triomes for Plains and Mountain for fetch lands. I like the idea of Forbidden Orchard.
Also, because of the way Shared Fate is worded, you cannot lose to an empty library. The draw is completely and totally replaced. You can mill out with dredge but only because dredge has a cost associated with the replacement effect.
So once you've stabilized the board with Shared Fate in play, the opponent should have no way of removing shared fate.
Once you've "combo'ed" them, you're free to share the contents of your deck and they may offer a concede or a draw based on the time left -- actually I advise this in paper, because a judge can rule that they aren't able to win in the current state and are stalling the game out.
