The reason why we play Imperial Guard is that some of us loved the idea of unaugmented humans basically the same as humanity today taking on the terrors and horrors of the 41st millennium with nothing but a laser rifle some thin armor and faith in the Emperor.

As a life long guard player, I’ve definitely come up against “why would you pick the regular humans?,” a lot. I think it makes my army more relatable to myself as a player.
I love how the guard plays on the tabletop, orders, units that need to support each other. Definitely fulfills a napoleonanic generating fantasy, but I definitely understand the criticisms.

Completely agree. I personally find space marines boring. But the thought that in the 41st millennium, there could be an imperial guard named something like Geoff or Kevin, who's about 5'10, 180lbs, and has a wife and kids, in amongst all the craziness, just makes them more relatable

As an AdMech player, the steakpunk and binary is exactly what I like about it. And to go in and watch that y'all rated Necrons high.... My heart!!! Oh the agony! Dark Mechanicum supposedly being the classified Codex is super hype though. I'll be entirely disappointed if it's just AdMech with more bits. There should be some overlap between the armies though. Introduce a bunch of cool Legio Cybernetica models that are part of both armies that do just have extra bits for chaosifying it. Trying not to get my hopes too high, but man are they already.

Honestly Ultramarines are the poster boys for a reason - it’s cause they’re SICK, the ultimate epitome of what it is to be an Astartes! I understand people being frustrated that they’re plastered onto every space marine thing and the share doesn’t go around to Salamanders, Imperial Fists, the other codex complaint chapters: but ultimately I still think they’re rad and I’ll always love the boys in blue.
They just ain’t edge lord enough for ya’ll 🤣

I'm an imperial guard player so I'll throw my two cents.
I don't think I'd play them if they were "just humans", I think a big part of the appeal for me is that they have relatively unique horde gunline-infantry playstyle whilst also bringing a bunch of tanks and artillery. I always play horde armies, and in 40K the options are pretty much Imperial Guard, Tyranids and Orks, and I already tried my hand at orks when I was little. I always preferred using ranged weapons in 40k and Orks/Tyranids lean a bit more into melee. Swapping to Guard was the right call for me, I love the heavy armour of the Kasrkin, the look of Scout Sentinels with their chain saws and chicken legs, and the command squads. Thats actually part of the appeal aswell, our main leader unit is a squad of 5 rather than a single model, as someone thats not hugely into single-entities and hero units, that is what really grabbed me from the start.
Plenty of people have said this already, but relatability does help. I also believe strongly that without the imperial guard, the astartes wouldn't feel as cool for so many people since you need regular humans in the game for the super humans to feel super.

7:24 "I just don't understand when you have so many cool armies you'd still pick bolt action."

5- Tyranids, just never intrigued me or spoke to me. I do think they are a decent threat in the lore, but it feels like they're really gonna need to pull some chicanery to actually beat them. They are a decent looming threat, but as an army I would never even consider them.
4- Aeldari, this is a defensive measure cause you put Votann at 4, and Aeldari at 4 on your best! For real though I've just never been into Elves in any media, especially not 40k.
3- The guard, I don't like hoard armies. I like vehicles, but I'd rather play an army that has actually sci-fi fantasy elements with it. I keep them out of last cause of the Fall of Cadia.
2- Death Guard, Morty is a bitch. Nurgle is pretty based, but I' usually just not a fan of their asthetic.
1- Admech, I will never understand Admech. I don't understand their rules, I don't get why people like them, I don't really care about their lore. Just never got my attention.

@@the_kieran_show I do think the Guard is hurt by how little variety there is in the modern range. I got into 40k in second where you had so many distinct mini ranges for it unified by vehicles, but go back to 1st and you had Guard on horseback and Guard on jetbikes and other things encouraging the idea of building armies at all tech levels depending on your planet.

  • @EmperorFawful
    @EmperorFawful Před 11 měsíci +4

Funnily enough for me it's vice versa.
Favorite army is Tyranids, but when it comes to the Imperial side both Adeptus Custodes and Adeptus Sororitas are my favorites, while the least favorite army is pretty much the majority of Space Marines, because they're just super soldiers, formed into knightly orders after half of them went crazy and started a way-too-overhyped civil war within their empire.
I don't know, I really do not like Space Marines that much. I do not despise them, don't get me wrong and thanks to me owning a Leviathan box, I'll come around and think about something, that will make these guys hopefully more interesting for me. Maybe a Renegade Non-Chaos chapter that goes by Deathwatch rules, because I might like them more as independent bounty hunters in single strike task forces, that doesn't strictly follow the Imperium's code.
Still can do the Imperium's work with both Sisters of Silence and the Sororitas, while having few better looking elite super soldiers accompany them in battle, if at all. These alongside some Imperial Guard regiments embody for me humanity's struggle with the outer threats more than 'here comes a Legion of Supermen, ready for battle'.
Again, just my personal opinion! I'm more interested in Xenos factions than I am into a main bulk of the Imperium. Portions of the Imperium however do interest me thanks to Warhammer 40k Pen & Paper sessions, where we played characters for the Inquisition or the Imperial Guard.
In that regard Space Marines/Chaos Space Marines just got for me the shorter end of the stick, because they were never that appealing to me compared to the rest of the franchise.

I think these are all pretty solid takes tbh!
The Sisters and Nids ranges have been fantastic over the past few years. I'd probably start a Sisters army if they weren't so damn detailed! It'd take a life time to conjure a decent force 😂
Whole heartedly agree on the Xenos take, I think there's far more variety that's accessible, they (GW) do a fantastic job at keeping them fresh too. #TauForever

    • @EmperorFawful
      @EmperorFawful Před 11 měsíci

@@the_kieran_show Agreeing with the army range, both are awesome. Still need to build my Sisters Combat Patrol and branch out from there, but Nids have priority first.
Tau are also fun. Visually both the hover vehicles and the auxilliary forces + their kitbash potential peak my main interest.
But if I have to start another Xenos army, I'd probably go for a mix out of Aeldari and Drukhari (Voidscarred Corsairs battle line units + Drukhari Reavers with Ynnari rules; Piratelord with Yvrainne rules as leader until Ynnari hopefully don't need Yvraine as their warlord or until Corsairs can take more than 250 points of Aeldari units into a Drukhari army.)
Though going into a full Wraith Construct army seems also tempting. ^.^

I fell into a rabbit hole with Adeptus Ridiculous, took a small break from you guys. I'm waiting on a new printer, so I'm not painting and assembling as much right now, so it felt good to listen to a bunch of lore. That being said, I'm happy to be diving back into the backlogs. I love the Custodes take, Sisters are way more intriguing. Also, Orks don't belong? They have such a cool set of lore, but the Tau I absolutely understand. Battletech/Gundam just feels too clean for 40k, let alone their kinda odd lore.

    For me it's like:
    5. Death Guard, the army has no identity right now on the tabletop, which is sad.
    4. Imperial Knights, they are cool, but they do not really fit the game format
    3. Chaos Demons. The fact that their lineup is designed to work for 40K and Age of Sigmar is bad for the army. They are like 90 % character models. Yes, I like my cool demon characters, but they lack troop variety ... a lot.
    2. Space Marines, I know they are the posterchild and the most played army, but they always get their equal attention cake while a lot o other factions really need a lot of attention cocncerning their rules, miniatures and troop lineup. Also goes for books. We need more books featuring other factions and characters to flesh them out.
    1. Leagues of Votann, they have no troop variety and are as barebones as it gets as an army which reflects in the drastic points and rules changes GW has done in the last months to desperately try to make them work, resulting in a super expensive army to collect with no miniature variety at all. They also could have done a lot more with the concept than "Space miners". They are Space Dwarves, do something cool with the concept.
    Honorable mention:
Tau - as a Guard player I kinda see them as just a more shooty and mobile Imperial Guard. And their plot armor for not being whiped out yet in the lore is extreme XD
But that's just personal bias, I can understand why people like them and their look. Mechas are cool :P

Please note that I think all of these have at least SOMETHING going for them - and all have some pretty awesome models. These are just the worst of an overall pretty solid bunch of factions.
So without further ado, my objectively correct opinions:
    5. (Chaos) Knights. Should not be a faction of their own, end of story. Spectacular models, but just plain stupid as a faction of their own. Make them easy allies for their side of things, done.
    4. Deathwatch. Should not be a faction of their own! Awesome background, and a few neat characters... but hardly any actual range of their own? Their background is excellent for the likes of Kill Teaam, but they just feel WRONG as a "full" army in 40K. They started as unique units you could ally in, and should have stayed that way.
    3. Custodes. Should not be a faction... I sense a pattern here. Some truly spectacular models, but... there are only 10000 of them, dedicated to protect the Emperor on Terra... yet they are playable as "a proper army" all over the galaxy? Just plain retarded...
    2. Grey Knights. See above. At least they have some genuine models of their own, but they share the same problems as Custodes (too few in numbers, way too specialised in their role), just way worse. Like Deathwatch, they should have stayed a special unit as an ally option for Imperium armies.
    1. Space Marine variant chapters with their own codex. Same, same. This started way back in Rogue Trader and with dedicated codizes in 2nd edition, but I still believe there are way too many chapters "deserving their own codex". No, they are not!

Let it be known that all of our least favourites are still solid in their own right. They wouldn't be eligible teams if they weren't!
You're absolutely on to something with 'shouldn't be a faction' that's a really interesting take. That being said Chaos Knights for example, would you just have Knight Houses in one book? Both loyal and traitor?

Have to agree with Orks. I've always felt that they are a hangover from Rogue Trader era 40k where things where obviously pitched as standard fantasy tropes in space. They don't really fit with the grimdark themes of the modern game. Same can be said for Votann and Tau.

I don't get excited when I think about them except for a select few models) 4. Demons (bad range, just KOS in game especially Slaanesh) 5. Genestealer Cult ($$$, cool rules but models don't do it for me.)

Necrons. - Some paint jobs and models can elevate them but bog standard Necrons are so bland.
Genestealer cults - Some infantry look nice, everything else is unfocused garbage
Tau. - Its the faction for gundam fanatics.. They're nicely design but just out of place in 40K,
Leagues of Vohtan - Boring vehicle designs and bland designs all round
Drukhari - Outdated models, Cringe Emo aesthetic, will stab you from using them.

@@malmasterson3890 I can think of some things I like about most of them, except for the LoV who I just really dislike. Grey Knights have very cool helmets but man some of that early lore they got soured me on them from the start haha. What were your top 8 anyway?

1- Leagues of Votann (They've got a ways to go, but I was so hyped for Space Dwarves and I personally like the asthetic they chose, just not the default League's color scheme. I like the Vehicle & Bike focus rn, and I hope they lean more into that. I'd love to see the train make a return.)
2- Grey Knights (I 100% understand why people, especially some old vets, don't like Grey Knights, but the concept & origins of this faction drew me in immediatel. Combine that with the insanely good CP Box and I was hooked.)
3- CSM (Abaddon and the story of the Fall of Cadia was what sold me on 40k. Also, I just love the asthetic)
4- Necrons (Excellent books, gorgeous models, easy to paint, lmao)
5/6- Both Knights (Just really fun projects to do & watch. Pretty much the only faction that I genuinely enjoy just for the hobbying of builds & painting.)
7- Dark Angels (mostly just The Lion for 40k tbh, 30k DA is where my true loyalty to them is)
8- Custodes (TTS and Henry Cavill pilled, tbh. I love their sub divisions, but I want to see them and SoS used more in the lore. The aquilan & Sisters in particular.)
I tend to really like Elite armies, which is probably why if I was being more realistic I'd actually move Votann down to like 4th. I don't like how they've treated them in 10th, Yaegirs were cool, but we need the rest of our range.

My least favorite 40K army has to be Chaos Daemons. For one simple reason. They're not a cohesive army, most people skew into only a single Chaos God or Monster Mash it up only with Greater Daemons and Be'lakor. They're 4 smaller, seperate forces that should just be part of the dedicated armies associated with their specific Chaos God. AoS does the same thing and the Daemons there are integrated into those armies quite well, so I dont see why 40K can't do the same.(in a world where Emperor's Children have their own Codex at least)

poster boys doodoo, but I extend that thought to almost much every faction and when it dominates the entire range, I don't care about cadia, I don't care about ultramar, don't particularly like abaddon
I think it's daemons though for worst for me, I don't think they fulfill the "fantasy" of what the army is supposed to be properly, there's a couple of standout cool models that do fulfill it, but it's all named characters with 100+ quid models, bloodletters just kinda suck, newer daemonettes are just ugly, nurgle's core unit is so lame I always confuse the name with the death guard chaff, horrors are fun, but that's really it

    • @Shakespeare563
      @Shakespeare563 Před 7 měsíci

@the_kieran_show mostly I find the space marine aesthetic boring, bunch of flat plates and even the more flavorful chapters like space wolves don't have as much flavor as I would like (if we're gonna do space Vikings, I'd like to go way more all in on it). I like the diversity and flavor of guard regiments (even if the models for everyone except krieg and cadians are woefully out of date), I like the little scenes that you get on like the heavy weapon team units of these little guardsmen helping each other. When you get multiple space marines together on a model, they're just stoically standing/sitting next to each other. Plus if I can bring in the fluff, I personally find space marines to be the least interesting part of the setting. There are some space marine characters I like (garro from the HH books is compelling to me) but it's a hard sell to get me to care about a space marine, whereas guard characters are more relatable and have more compelling drama to me

    5. Tau: Would not have been on this list because they are actualy cool but... KROOT. The Tau gunline makes sence, if you are not a Xenomorp. Shoot em, do not go close and stab ... SHOOT EM! => Very WH40kish. Just because half of their force is failed Tyranid rejects they are here. If you realy wanna play with xeno's, do like me, man up and go Tyranid (or Genestealer Cults, the only good Chaos Cult).
    4. Daemons: I love them in AoS and in Warhammer Fantasy, not in WH40k. In this part of the universe they all sound like Slaneshi pleasure ships... Also, in many editions, stupid summoning rules.
    3. Astra Militarum, aka Imperial Guard: I only like the Vostroyan and can get behind other folk hyping up Da Krieg, but man, Cadia? Catachan? Why GW? They are the 2 most boring armies of the game and I do not care about their named characters or their units lorewise. All penal sh!t units for all I care. Also, you gonna spend 1000€ in a fantasy game to play a bland HUMAN???
    2. Chaos Space Marines (in general, not the Death Guard => awasome / Thousand Sons => cool): In WH40k, they are still Legio astartes in the 100k marine warbands, deamon infused and they still can't win. How to spell looser? ==> Chaos Space Marine.
    1. Leagues of Votan: Weak, pathetic force on the table. I'm a gamer first and foremost and lets face reality here. On a tournament, I do not even want to play against them for the free 25/0 win. Why? Well, everybody and ther dead cat wins against them by showing up. So you get ZERO resistance points for defeating a strong oponent. So if you are tied with another player, but he did not play against Leages of Vomit, he goes to the final 2 and you can go join a Chaos cult out of despair not to be seen next to the LoV.
