I don't know if I'm the only one, but I put on a different cornette deep dive barely audible, to help me fall asleep each night.
I was at Wrestlemania 10. Second Row behind the trio in white shirts spelling out WWF. My dad was with me. 25 years almost to the day was back in MSG for Supercard of honor. I could only think of my dad and wish he was here again.

2020 was good for one thing - it introduced me to Jim Cornette. God bless this man.

Dub same here, for some reason it was on the air in Raleigh on one of the independent channels, It and USWA both came on this channel. But sadly I remember, and I’m sure you remember this back then just because you and I liked it, if ur friends were like mine not all of the wrestling fans I knew liked SMW. Even back then there were fans that would only watch wrestling if it wasn’t WWF or WCW. I think 25 years later people like it because they missed that style of wrestling which was pretty much the wCW/southern style of wrestling. You weren’t going to get the “you said 4 flat tires but I only said I had A flat tire” angle in WWF but we got in both WCW and SMW.
Smokey mountain was before my time but I definetly enjoy it for what it was

@@bitteroldman No, it doesnt make sense to haul a oxygen mask into the room and resuscitate someone who was just put out with a sleeper during a match, while the opponents back is turned, and they shoot up like you hit them with adrenaline. That only makes sense if you have an IQ of 10. It would be better if you just admited that sometimes people are hypocrites. But you can't do that, because you are a bitter old man.

Smokey Mountain was actually the best promotion in the states for entire years of the 90’s. People say weird shit like “WCW and WWF were 1&2 at different times and ECW was the third major promotion.” ECW only ever lost money. WCW had 3 years of profitability in it’s entire history under Turner ownership. WWF was doing similar houses to SMW in the early 90’s for the most part as businesses was down. SMW was never worse than the third place promotion and for very long stretches Smokey was 2. And then on occasion for little stretches SMW was the best of all four.

This(all of Jim's wrestling commentaries) is honestly one of the very few things I can listen to without a background to back it up...

It's a miracle that Jim didn't have a stroke, heart attack, or aneurysm just by booking Smoky Mountain and going to the WWF tapings, just because booking Smoky Mountain AND going to the WWF tapings is a bit much, but at the same time, WWF was short on talent as they were until the late 90's where business popped.
I haven't watched or cared about wrestling in 20 years but Jim is one hell of a story teller. Maybe that's why he was such a successful manager, because he can MAKE you care.
This isn't the first time I've listened. In a huge follower of both podcasts... I have to admit, I like it better on CZcams. Just wrestling... The way I like it...

I love listening to Jim Cornette, I just started listening about 3 months ago and immediately I was hooked and now I listen to the old podcasts as well as his new podcasts whenever I can.
Jim Cornette: It's amazing I made it through this period without having a breakdown.
Also Jim Cornette: And that's when I had a breakdown in a Dairy Queen drive-thru still talked about 25 years later.
Because as he stated in the video that post producing Smoky Mountain Wrestling TV's, all the days and nights working etc and also the sponsors they had didn't show up for the Hyden Kentucky show.
I was at that show in Hurley, Virginia. Grew up about 20 miles from there.

I think Corny stole this line from the great Ian Anderson, who wrote it as a lyric in Bungle in the Jungle. It could be a complete coincidence as I've no idea what kind of music he likes.

Guys like Tracey Smothers, Brad Armstrong, The Heavenly Bodies (Prichard/Del Ray) and Dirty White Boy Tony Anthony had came around 10 years prior in the territory days, they would have been so much bigger. Underrated right there.
I didn't live though the 80's and I really don't have any first hand experience of what hairstyles were popular at the time. I did live through the 90's though and there is no way the 80's had more mullets than the 90's. Somehow the 90's fly under the mullet radar and they seem to get associated with the 80's. The whole WWF roster in the mid 90's all the way down to the refs had mullets.
I agree with that, I think the 90's mullets are more pronounced, know what I mean? The back was longer and the sides and front alot shorter. The 80's was like, feathered and layered all around...not sure which is more comical/sad.
No matter what decade it is, hockey has the most mullets. Even more than the wrestlers in the same last few decades.

Say whatever you want about the man: But he sent his guys down to work in the Smokey Mountain Wrestling promotion, and payed for them, even if it was so that Jim and he could make a statement about the quality of WCW at the time- Vince is always *all in* when it comes to this sort of thing.
There are a lot of stories like that. For all of his faults and eccentricities, there are aspects of Vince that do make him seem like a genuinely good guy. Even Cornette who hates Vince's vision of wrestling seems to not think bad of him as a person.

I heard Jim on one of his podcast talk about him being basicly the ideal man for raw he didn't have anything to do with naming it though. I always wondered if Vince worked Jerry with the story of if he went to the joint Jerry was going to run things. This was around the time Watts was about to be canned and wcw was looking for someone to run it and cut cost which Eric did at first in 93 till summer 94 then he got a cubby for Hogan which made him turn into a slut with uncle Ted's money. Jerry could have ran it better then Erectile Bicthchop.

I remember seeing the Moon Dogs wrestle at an event in Memphis in the early 90s. I was really young then so when I got older I always thought I’d seen junkyard dog and just remembered the name wrong lol. The funny thing is I think the moon dogs wrestled junkyard dog so I did see him either way

Growing up here in KY, the moondogs on USWA were terrifying.
Some of their Smokey Mountain stuff is hard to watch. Even in some of the crazier hardcore promotions (which aren't really my thing) I don't think I've seen any wrestlers that seemingly have less regard for their opponents' well-being, but I guess it's what got them over.
Yessssss Mike! I loved the USWA, watched it here in bowling Green KY as a kid. Good stuff.
I love listening to jim recalling the events and stories of the old promotions. He has an excellent memory. Now if he would shut his yap about politics and stick to wrestling!

Jim Cornette's memory is fucking amazing. I know that he has his calendar that will read from, but there is tons of stuff that he talks about that isn't in that book.
Weird as hell to hear about Dungannon and Hurley from the great Jim Cornette.
Vince only told Jim that WWF would pay their guys that appeared on the SMW show. According to Sean Waltman it was like going to do an autograph signing , meaning “you work for WWF so u go do this thing” there was no extra pay for doing that particular SMW show.
If the guys are under contract they get paid wherever Vince sends them.
My biggest take-away from this is that New Jack can actually wrestle.
He was always a pretty good wrestler but that was overshadowed by Paul Heyman having him do stupid shit in the name of being extreme.

What strikes me as odd is that when Jim mentions the infamous Hyden Kentucky Dairy Queen incident, Brian Last is like 'oh yeah I know what it's famous for' and then a second later he says 'that part I didn't know'. For someone who remembers almost everything with Smoky Mountain Wrestling doesn't remember the Hyden Kentucky Dairy Queen incident. Sounds like he didn't see the video.

All they could really do was work with Owen and Bulldog. I don't think many others could do their style of matches.

Cornette talks shit on ECW and hardcore wrestling, which is fine, because he's right about some things, but did he ever stop to think that maybe the reason that SMW show did so well is because he had a Deathmatch, Cage match and Chain match all on the same card?
A lot of people would agree with you, and there are many promotions built around hardcore wrestling. But I think Jim would say the reason it drew is because he had built the storyline to that point and hadn't burnt out the gimmick.
