      Everyone's hard wired differently. Ever since I was a kid I tend to "mirror" those around me, but I never go out of my way to be an ass. If people are kind to me, I'm the best friend they ever had. If people think they can play me, I blow them right off and they think I'm an ass. But the thing is I just don't bother to waste my energy on them. So in that way I'm not really an ass, I'm just being nice without saying anything. I do think Justin has it in him to go off on someone though. It comes thru in some of his backhanded, but hilarious comments about things. His recent stab at his ex kinda shocked me. For his daughter's sake, we could have lived without hearing that. Although I'd be all ears to listen to him go on about it in private.

I really don't like recovery "catch phrases" or terms but if there's one thing that really stuck with me, it is the constant personal inventory. @avgriffin Před rokem +3

      True, but also is a conversation between you and your self as interesting? Most us musicians do say it's for me and it is, but me personally the human connection of pub gigs I've experienced is the best thing in the world. It's genuine expression, and people are validating that by enjoying it, you are creating a good time, and let's face it, artists often are seen by society as useless until they blow up, so that is very cathartic.

    • @musicsurfandrats
      @musicsurfandrats Před rokem +1

      @@avgriffin I see your point and I also agree. But I have a few reserves about that Artist-Audience connection and what it actually is, but I'll keep it to myself. I will share though, that I personally enjoy writing the most. I write in the hope that the next song is gonna be better than the last, one day if the music gets to be great and also have that component that "talks" to people then the big audience will come. Writing music is one hell of an addiction aswell. Also for us as a band, playing abroad is what we enjoy the most, so we book ourselves some small tours far away from germany and europe and enjoy the combination of travelling and gigging a lot. More than anything I feel that by sharing experiences the band grows stronger together. That is to me the best part of playing live, doing it with people I enjoy being with, that I cherish and trust.

    • @le_th_
      @le_th_ Před rokem +2

      In your early 20s it's entirely normative for your narcissism to "blind" you, as your prefrontal cortex isn't yet fully wired into the lower brain until about the age of 25 (even later if you're a male). The prefrontal cortex is the part of your brain that helps you think about consequences before acting and/or speaking...and not just about consequences for yourself, but also consequences for others.
      Now, if you've been diagnosed with NPD or covert narcissism as an adult, it's unlikely you will ever be capable of feeling empathy for others because narcissists can't handle the 10 years of slow therapy it takes to peel those uber fragile layers of onion skin to accept that your own parents never loved your unconditionally and only loved you performatively (and when you performed well/in a manner that brought them narcissistic supply as your parent). If it's just that you're high in narcissistic traits, there's hope.

BUT, for me, I’ve always written music to soothe my inner angst, to make sense of the world, and to tell the truth in its most purest and expressive form. It’s perfect when people hear it and validate it, but that never stops me from loving it with all my heart. So when a douchebag that I know either has taken steps to try to make my life harder in any way whether that be by actions or words - trust n believe when we meet you will know where we stand simply by my honesty and in the end tho it may not be to your liking, you would at the very least, appreciate my honesty to you amongst the rest of the lies you may hear that day.

I used to drink Jack Daniels like a fish in my 20's, drank 40's like a fish in my 40's and when my wife said 'Lets have kids!', we just stopped drinking altogether for a year with not even thinking about it twice and after 2 healthy beautiful babies 11 mnths apart, we went out one nite to celebrate some free time and had a beer after 3yrs and could have give or taken it - but we never really went back to drinking like we did back in the day and I dunno it as pretty easy for me, much easier than cigarettes which I quit a zillion years ago after smoking since I was 16. Coffee!... now thats a different animal.

    I’m a barber and musician of 15 years and I totally live by that philosophy of always be nice, regardless of what you know, think or feel about the person you’re engaging with. If that is your natural character and you take pride in your intelligence, you will never feel the need to mirror the actions of a renowned bad person (arsehole). I can safely say it’s absolutely carried my life to great heights and I’m so grateful I took my dads advice as a kid of “kill em with kindness!”. Awesome content and very insightful! Thank you Justin.

    I know what you mean about being a likable person. I’ve known some very likable people, that I was great friends with, and those people would often get away with behaviors that you wouldn’t tolerate at all from someone a little less charming.
    I don’t know if there’s much to be done for it. The folks who do it don’t know they’re doing it, and those on the receiving end usually don’t add it up.
    Being a human being is about grace. We all learn and grow and make mistakes and then we die and grow pretty flowers. Gotta do what you can when you can.
    Cheers, JH.

    "Somebody's got to look at it, somebody has to listen to it". Not necessarily, in my opinion. If you are using your creative talent to make money and make a living, then yes, I agree. Other peoples approval IS important in that situation. However, if you love creating just for yourself and your well-being, your creations CAN be put aside. The amount of unfinished WIPS (works in progress) I have, is fast filling up my craft room. I also have a very large collection of finished projects. It doesn't matter though...at least to me. I'm always looking out for the next challenge!
    It's the art of 'creating' that inspires me and keeps me passionate about life. Nice one both, loved the first podcast xxx

    I tend to believe some people are driven to create stuff simply due to the joy they experience through the creative process. It's not about the finished product; whether it's "art" or not is for others to decide. If an offshoot of the creations turns into something that can be monetized--all the better! But the driving force on the part of the art-teest is sometimes simply *creating* the thing. I love this channel!

But I never saw the mask during the whole 20 years i follow them... i always saw the brillant artist and performer... "A Son of Freddie", and when I learned his passion for Freddie and Queen, it was a sign for me that i was true. You cannot write such guitar lines, or such lyrics or perform like Justin, if you are not "touched" by God Freddie magic gift. He just needed to be understood. Nobody is alone completly. ❤

    I write because I love the end result of creating something that I and others may like, so yeah, seeking validation and praise. Then to create something with other band members is great as you create something together and all the connections that come with that. But I also write as a great form of self expression, to get shit out, a form of cleansing/therapy and if no one gets it, that's ok, 'cos it works for me.

    I think I understand what the therapist was talking about when they said "likeable" in that way, because I have someone in my life who I would say is very similar to Justin in many ways. They, too, are a musician (guitarist and vocalist, mainly, but dabble in other instruments), and they also are carrying a lotttttt of trauma (though their trauma is largely to do with loss, rather than addiction).
    Through being a highly-accomplished and talented musician that's in great demand, and through using humor both as a coping mechanism, and as a way to avoid people feeling sad or sorry for them, they've developed a persona that is "very likeable". They're also inherently, incredibly kind, but sometimes I do feel like they're still (after a couple years of knowing each other well) playing to me like I'm an audience member even when we're just supposed to be hanging out. That can be fun a lot of the time, but sometimes I do feel that the fact that they're so "likeable" (while that is coming from a genuinely good and kind heart) can create a bit of a barrier and feel like a deflective wall.
    I don't think they're necessarily putting said wall up deliberately -- I actually think it's second-nature, since it's helped them survive tremendous pain thus far.
    But I can see why the therapist said "likeable" as if it wasn't necessarily a good thing. The confidence and constant niceness can actually sometimes feel like you're only getting to see the "likeable" person through a charming, crowd-pleasing filter, rather than in their totality ("warts and all", as they say). But the "warts" and vulnerability, while not generally characterized as "likeable" (because they're unflattering), can often lead to some of the most genuine and deep points of connection as you get to know a person better.
    Similar to autotune, actually! Likeability can feel like autotune, but for the personality that one puts forth in interactions. It can be very pleasing and palatable, but it's sometimes missing the sharps and flats (highs and lows of being an imperfect person) that convey and inspire emotional interrelation.
    I hope that all made sense....
    Regardless, I clearly love "likeable" musicians, as this channel is my favorite one on CZcams, and this friend of mine that I've spoken about is one of my favorite people on earth.
    Appreciate your thoughts and honesty as always, Justin! I'm excited to keep watching what comes next.

    To throw something in that wasn’t mentioned about “why make music?”, a big part about it is the journey and process of making the music. The process of making a lackluster song could be amazing and make it an amazing song to the artist because of the impact the journey/process had on them (since the end result is only part of the equation), but to someone who only sees the end product and wasn’t part of the journey/process of making the song, they only see it as lackluster because they don’t see the full picture.

It's the process that counts as much as the result, for me. When I was young, me and my friends fronted as hard-asses wearing our NYPD(Ramones)leather jackets, but inside we were all mooshes. We were all sweethearts really, but we looked and were punk AF.
