Get Out Gear Down Puffy Camping Blanket - Review
What is it : This is an ultralight summer time down blanket that can be used in numerous ways. For an example, I’ve taken this across the country as part of my overlanding kit, I’ve taken it backpacking and after a long testing period, I am ready to share my thoughts.
    Agenda Free Link : amzn.to/3ZGcr7M
    Price : $70
    Materials :
    20D Ripstop
650 Fill Down (80/20 blend of duck down and weathers)
    Weight :
Company claims 1.1lbs with stuff sack - accurate
    Measurements :
    77”x50”
    Colors :
Black, Blue, Grey, Green, Orange, Blue
    Versions :
Down and Synthetic - The Synthetic version is heavier and is slightly less expensive.
More about it in a minute
    Features :
    Durable Water Repellent coating
Can be worn as a poncho with included snaps
    Roll top Stuff bag
Temp Rating : This is going to be very, very subjective as everyone is different when it comes to temperature and what they find comfortable.
For myself, it has kept me warm down to 50F while wearing clothing; shirt, socks and pants. I tend to run hot.
For Susie, it has kept her warm down to around 60 and she runs cold.
Keep in mind that this is a 1lb blanket, don’t expect to be rocking this by itself in cold weather and you’ll be fine. Again, temp rating are very suggestive; there is going to be someone out there who says they used it below freezing in a blizzard on Everest and they were hot…..but that isn’t going to be the case for most people. The temp range that I stated is reasonably accurate.
    Review Pros :
    Excellent warm weather insulation option;
Overall quality is good; stitching is good, snaps are good.
Nylon material is comfortable against the skin.
    Extremely lightweight
Excellent supplemental insulation layer; in other words, when using this with additional components it shines; use it with a sleeping bag liner, use it to add some warmth to your existing sleeping bag.
Example : I have a sleeping bag liner from Carinthia and in conjunction with this blanket, low 40’s is easily achievable and together it’s a lightweight kit.
    Good color options
    Very compressible.
Stuff bag is excellent - good size, easy to stuff, roll top
Price is comparable to other offersing
    Review Cons :
With that being said, for what you are receiving as far as down goes, less than a pound, this blanket feel expensive. Susie thought that it cost $35 and was shocked to see a price tag of $70.
Small - some individuals will want and need a larger blanket - this is not very wide. Because it is so small, it is easy to become uncovered as you toss and turn throughout the night.
    Thin
Snaps - As is, I do not find them to be useful - I would have liked to see snaps on the top and bottom - it would help with staying warm in cool conditions as it would prevent the blanket from falling away when tossing and turning.
A foot box would be very beneficial and would be easy to add to this product.
Down loss : Susie and I both have one of these blankets and we both experienced some initial down loss which has stopped. I never saw where the features were coming from but when we got them and first used them we both had feathers on us during the first couple of nights out. Feathers might have been in the stuff bag…not sure

    Summary Review :
    I have gone over a lot of pros and cons and I’m sure that you are wondering, do i recommend this or not;
There is a time and a place for this product and I wish that the company was a bit more forthcoming about when that time was. The company claims that it is comfortable 45F with a sleeping pad but I do not find that to be accurate.
There are the issues with the measurements and then the difficulty to distinguish the down from the synthetic versions.
I do like the product and there are times and ways to use it where it works well; for some it will be worth it and for others, this is not going to be a beneficial product.
Comment down below, what do you think of this down blanket? Is this a product for you?

I've got a couple of these blankets. I actually used them this summer for camping in South Wales (UK), also they were handy when flying internationally with my family. They're light, and compact. Much better than the airline blankets.
They pack down really small too.
I got one, and as soon as I received it, my wife stole it and I had to get another...

I have this blanket and love it. It's not a sleeping bag and is not designed to wrap around your whole body. I slept on my Insulated Nemo Tensor with this blanket over top of me last weekend. Temp got down to 48 degrees and I was toasty with just a t-shirt, shorts and wool socks. There is plenty of blanket to tuck under your body on both sides and at your feet, either on your back or on your side.
The weight is what sold me and I think it's worth the $70.

I've had this product for about 6 months now and love it. It's not going to keep you warm in the colder seasons by itself, but used inconjunction is perfect as an extension. Overall, no complaints and it's served me well so far.

I was just about to buy this based on other reviews - it seems to do just what I need - add about 10-15 degrees to my sleep system for a low cost in weight. But, then I thought, I better check with TOGR! It was good to hear that you basically confirmed what I had already come to think about this product. But, with more detail and thoughtfulness than other reviews. That's why I love what you do. Keep at it man, what you do is very appreciated!!

  • @powerguymark
    @powerguymark Před 2 lety +5

Excellent review! I own several of these and you are correct on every Point except for maybe the warmth/fluffiness. (Maybe I just sleep hot)
I bought each of my kids one of these, but they were going unused so I decided to buy a snap kit so multiple blankets can be snapped together. Shooting for three. Along with installing snaps to allow it to be put together like a sleeping bag for use inside of a 2go systems breathable mylar lined bivy.
I found the fluffiness and dimensions quite nice.
If you leave it out of the stuff sack for long periods of time they fluff-up quite nicely approaching the smaller dimensions that were listed by the company due to its fullness.
Three blankets along with the bivvy and a 24-in wide piece of reflectix should be amazingly warm, lightweight, water repellent and breathable.
Highly recommend ditching their bag and using a dry bag.

About 5 years ago, a similar down blanket was available at the Costco near where I live. I bought one and found it to be well worth the $20 I paid for it. Went back and bought more for all my family members. They have worked well for mildly cool weather and to supplement other sleeping gear. No snaps. To make a foot box, I gathered the end and secured it with a woman's hair elastic. Worked well for my primary top quilt in a hammock. I used additional cover as needed.................
    Thanks for sharing.

I have this blanket and really love it. I read in the Amazon reviews to either wash and dry it after getting it, or to just put it in the dryer with some clean tennis balls for 15-20 minutes. I chose to wash mine, and I couldn’t believe how much it puffed up after washing and drying. I have used it to extend my sleeping bag’s warmth, as a layer for a sunrise hike when I knew we’d be sitting on top of a bald for about an hour, and for various other non-hiking/backpacking activities (another sunrise viewing at a sports camp, in poncho mode). We love it for a throw around the house, too. I live in the south so I think it would pair well with a sleeping bag liner as a summer backpacking quilt, too.

Just discovered your review. I have one of these blankets, and agree with everything you say in your video. I modified mine with a bunch of extra snaps so I can make a footbox or turn it into a sleep wrap, as well as use it as a campfire poncho, which has improved its versatility and made it more useful. It's not a blanket for cold conditions though - you only have to hold it up to the light to see the gaps in the insulation, even after a good shake. Thanks for a comprehensive review.

I've been using mine for over a year and it is a great additional blanket to bring. Like you said it is to small and not warm enough on its own but it is the perfect addon to a 30 or 40 degree sleeping bag for cold weather camping. I've used it while camping in low 20 degree weather using a 20 degree bag that typically starts to feel cold in the 30's. With this blanket stuffed inside I was nice and toasty.

That's how I use my Horizon Hound one; I wrap it around my fleece liner, do up the snaps at my neck like a bib, & then zip up my sleeping bag over the top. It's fantastic for that - I get basically another (Australian) season out of my 3-season bag that way.

I agree with each and every comment and assessment you made about this blanket. I bought it because it packs pretty small and it is relatively light. Susie was right on when she said it seems like it should cost $35 or so. That's exactly what I thought. All that having been said, I use it inside a very light sleeping bag and I think it keeps me warm down to about 40F. Maybe a little lower. Now, if I had the choice I'd purchase the poncho liner. Good job, Luke. Keep up the good work.

I almost bought those Costco blankets. Those truly are underfilled. These are not, in spite of this reviewers assessment.
The down quality is only 650 so it takes little while for them to fluff back up to their full potential after stuffing them in the storage bag.
The trick is to get them out of the stuff sack as soon as possible when setting up your sleep system to allow them as much time as possible before bedtime to fluff out.

Yep, I brought two from Costco, $20-$30, they are stored in my vehicles for emergencies and I use them to supplement my car camping setup. Susie is right, this does feel like a $35 product. It seem like this product is slightly larger though, I remember it barely covers my feet and it slides off easily.

I have a 12 year old Jacks R Better No Sniveler down quilt rated to 20 F that weighs a half an ounce more than that. Then again, it uses baffles instead of sewn thru quilts and 850 goose down instead of the 650 hodge podge. It'll stuff into a smaller bag than that too, thought I rarely compress mine that much. It has a velcro hole in the middle so it can be worn under a shell layer as a huge insulation layer, attachment points to be used as a hammock underquilt and ties for a footbox when used as a topquilt.
My Wiggy's insulated hammock liner weighs closer to 26 ounces, but it uses Climashield with similar features. It's good to about 50 F but is almost oblivious to moisture.

Thanks for featuring this product. I have the similar Horizon Hound down blanket, about the same dimensions and 1lb. Puffy and light. I wouldn't use it as a stand alone cover because I sleep cold. However, I've found it great to use inside of my sleeping bag when I want to add some insulation or as a cover during a nap. Also good for walking around camp on a chilly morning or evening, with it snapped around the shoulders, poncho mode. If you keep your expectations realistic for it, it's a useful product.

Where I live the coldest time of the year is usually about 40° and rarely drops below that for more than 24-48 hrs at a time. Most hiking/camping within 4 hrs of here is the same for 10-11 months out of the year. This plus a 20° bag should be perfect for my needs. I think that it does fit into a smaller corner of the market but it seems like it's a perfect fit for those hotter climates where nights are still in the 60s to 80s or warmer. Thanks for the review.

I always have the same problem with all these down blankets, no matter how much they cost. They're all too short/narrow for me. I'm 6'2". If the blanket isn't 78"+ long and 55"+ wide, it's too small. I usually take a Snugpak Jungle Blanket (regular) in my pack during the summer. It just barely fits.
I'm seriously considering buying a 50F quilt from Loco Libre or UGQ to fill this need. It will cost more, but will fit me.

As one person stated below. Costco had a similar product that I paid $20 for and works great with my sleep system in colder weather. I wish I had purchased more at the time because they would also great around the house as well! $20 was an amazing deal but I am 6’ 200lbs and it’s a bit short if used on its own.

I have what I believe is an identical blanket with a different brand name, that I ordered through a small "cottage" outdoors supplier. My intended uses were what you indicated it's best suited for... great as a stand-alone blanket for mild "summer" conditions, and supplement to sleep system for colder conditions.. whether tent camping, back of my pickup/canopy, or around home etc. I tested mine in a backpacking tent in back yard for numerous nights in different temps. I also tested it on two different insulated air sleeping pads.. both pads full length and extra wide, similar R value. I knew to unpack the tightly compressed blanket hours before sleep, but found it continued to improve loft/warmth over added days being left spread out on my sleeping pad. (I purchased a cheap mesh "laundry bag" for long-term storage/good ventilation.) I am about 5'8" and found it long enough for a "blanket" but agree it'd be too short for someone closer to 6 ft or taller, as a stand-alone in cooler temps. I'd say I'm a "medium temperature sleeper".. and I routinely sleep in light/medium wool sox when camping in cool temps, plus thin "tights" and long-sleeved soft shirt, to make getting up in the night easier, as well as comfort if one or both arms is outside of "cover". After 2-3 days to optimize "loft and warmth", dressed as described, I was very comfortable with blanket (as a blanket) and R 3.7 sleeping pad with temps down as low as upper 40's, and would have probably been OK down to 45 or a bit less. HOWEVER, that's inside a 2 person backpacking tent, in ideal calm, dry conditions.

I bought the down fill and I live in Florida. When it’s in the 30’s I put it over top of my down sleeping bag. 60’s just as a top blanket. I have the double fill for my dog to use keeps him warm. I am next going to try horizon hound trek. I live in a hot climate so mostly as a top blanket.

I have one by Horizon Hound & once it's fully lofted (it initially takes like a couple of days, because of being stored compressed for extended amounts of time prior to shipping), it's really nice.
You have to hang it (at home) when you're not using it, to avoid the same effects again; never carry it in the sack for more than a couple of days, or it'll be thin + sad again for hours, like Luke's one, when you do pull it out.
It's lovely to use, but you have to understand that it's not _a quilt_ & it's unfair to judge it against one; it's only meant as a supplementary layer when you're feeling a bit too chilly, but not full-on freezing, in your clothes or sleep system. Using the snaps to wear it as a cape, or down your front, when you're sitting outside, it's great to keep the chill off, & using it as effectively a liner inside your sleeping bag/quilt - or on top, but you have to fasten the snaps around your neck bib-style to keep it from sliding off in the night, because it's a very slippery fabric - gives you a very toasty few extra degrees.
      It's also wonderful as a couch snuggle-throw.
If you want extra warmth but don't care about weight, then, sure, get a wool blanket, but if weight does matter to you, these really are a great instrument in your comfort toolbox.

I've been using the Zefabak Down Blanket Black-500 at 28oz, 600 fill, duck down 90%. Works very well. I've used it alone, no sleeping bag, but with sil tarp cover in freezing temp (32F), and it kept me surprisingly warm. I'm a believer. But as colder winter approaches I'll have to switch back to an appropriate sleeping bag for my backpacking trips. Still, the down blanket will go with me in the car and back into the backpack next Spring. Blew me away.

I have the down version of this blanket. I also have a wobbie, and a swagman roll by helikon-tex. All that being said this is bay far the most compact of them all. The wobbie is the heaviest, and most bulky. That is why is stays in my truck as part of my emergency kit. The swagman roll is the most versatile, and most expensive. This down blanket is the one I use most because of the weight, and packability. I use it in the Colorado mountains in 40 degree weather combined with an insulated sleeping pad and sleeping bag liner. I am typically a cold sleeper, and I stay warm throughout the night. I only have a 3 season tent (The North Face Stormbreak). I have not had an issue with poor loft, and I have owned this blanket for a little over 2 years, and it still fluffs up pretty well. I think your review was accurate, and fair all though I was fortunate enough to purchase this blanket for $40, and that seems like a bargain compared to the overpriced swagman roll. As far as the advertising goes, and poor reviews I agree that people are unaware that there is a synthetic version, and confuse the lower priced synthetic version for the down version. I think their advertising is taking a page out it the Rumpl blanket book because they have some advertising that requires you to be thorough when reading the descriptions as well. Thank you for the awesome review, and keep doing what your doing. 🤙🏽

Looks a lot like the Lowland Outdoor down blanket which is 8+ rated. Good lightweight down blanket which is extended by using the Urpro Waterproof warm fleece on top of it. Together they make a great combination and are still light weight but with option of using either layer separately or combined for the extra warmth. In winter I go even further and add the Snugpak jungle blanket as a middle layer. Total weight combined is about 2.2kg.

I've got a Ozark trail fleece "sleeping bag", it's a light weight roll up polyester fleece sleeping bag that's the warmest dang thing for being so thin, I found it in a dumpster in an apartment complex, it was brand new, people move and throw everything away. I've been using this "blanket" for almost 15 years, I don't know that you could use it by itself in cool weather, but it would keep you from freezing in an emergency situation, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a lightweight blanket, it also makes an excellent sleeping bag liner.

Very cool!! I almost bought a synthetic thermarest packable blanket this year. Rumpl makes a nice puffy blanket too. I think they offer both down and synthetic?.. Nemo also which you have reviewed in the past. These are a great way to go in warmer months if you dont like to be enclosed in a sleeping bag or if you move around alot in your sleep. I run warm myself so blankets like this i could probably get 3 seasons out of if dressed properly. Good find Luke!! Stay safe! Hike on!!

I have one of these as well as a Puffer Wolf brand blanket. I like the Puffer Wolf better. It’s slightly more puffy. I would never consider this blanket for anything more than an addition to my existing sleeping bag, although my wife has used it as her main sleep system in the summer and loves it.

  • @mysterylovescompany2657

I forgot to mention the first time I watched this; I have one of these, & when Luke says the pictures are false advertising + "it will _never_ look like that", he's not quite accurate.
I hang mine, + only compress it for travel, & when allowed enough time to loft up after unpacking (a few hours, after a bit of shaking) + when stored in a lofted state so it "remembers" it, the baffles do indeed get that fluffy.
Luke's is just flat because he doesn't give it the time it needs to loft.
