New Apple Pencil (USB-C) - Unboxing & Hands-On!

- Apple last week began shipping out the new USB-C Apple Pencil, so we thought we'd check it out for MacRumors readers who might be interested in purchasing one. The USB-C Apple Pencil is compatible with all iPads that have a USB-C port and that are running iOS 17.1 or later.
When it comes to design and feel, the USB-C Apple Pencil is much like the second-generation Apple Pencil, featuring a matte finish and a flat side where it can attach to the iPad, but it's worth noting that it's shorter. Unlike the Apple Pencil 2, it is not able to pair with an iPad automatically, and you'll need a USB-C cable for pairing purposes.

I have the 1st Gen. The charging is so funky but it works great (along with Notability).
Funky chain!
Big fan love your TEC vid
Very informative
What would also be cool is if you could also use that new Apple Pencil with IPhones that can run IOS 17! :)
pressure sensitivity should not be IRL DLC
It seems like it works like all those cheap pencils available. Ones that don't have to be paired. I have one for my iPad Air. I bought the Air because I wanted to see if by having a M1 processor I'd use it with my work. Film Editing. It didn't work out that way. My previous iPad was the 9th generation it it was just as functional as this iPad. The iPad has one function it does well, drawing. Otherwise it's too locked down to be an effective tool.
why isn’t my connecting to my ipad? i did everything. nothing showed up. i have the ipad pro 12.9 6 generation.
This fits on the iPad Mini 6 the best of all !
When Apple Pencils are $20 I’ll buy one.
Real
Keep dreaming.
Oh am what will Apple ever do without XxBloggs money
😂😂😂😂 i wait 2 years
When ur not broke you’ll be able to afford Apple products 😭
Very useful video. I think this does fill a niche. I have a 1st Gen pencil. Bought the 5th Gen iPad Air earlier this year. Bought the Lightning to USB-C adapter for Pencil they sell.
Turns out I didn’t read the fine print on that adapter close enough. It’s only compatible with the 10th Gen iPad, which doesn’t support the 2nd Gen Pencil and my iPad won’t pair with a 1st Gen.
So that was confusing. Looks like this Pencil does pair with both. But the product page doesn’t mention it’s missing the pressure sensitivity.
If it was just the charging difference I’d probably save the $60 CDN. But losing the option for pressure in art apps to me is a lot bigger than the double tap.
So I finally pulled the trigger on a 2nd Gen to take advantage of their Black Friday gift card deal (which makes it more like a $25 difference).
do you have to pair them with the cable every single time you use it? or does it stay paired after the first time?
It stays paired
shouldve reviewed it with the ipad 10 since that what it will be bought for
I wasn't able to see the charging thing on the top and I just unboxed it do you have anything that could help.?
If there’s silver at the top that means it’s a 1st generation which has a lightning connector that attaches to your iPad without a cable.
If there’s no sliver at the top and it doesn’t have the pull-out cap then it’s probably a 2nd generation which charges by magnetically attaching to your iPad.
I wish the USB C pencil had an actual C male, like the 1. Gen has a lightning one to just plug it straight into the iPad.
Since my 10. Gen iPad is not compatible with 2. Gen Pencil, I have to get out a charging cable every time I want to use the pencil (and with my 1. Gen pencil a lighting/C adapter on top of that).
Would have definitely upgraded to the USB C pencil but if I have to get out the cable either way there is literally no point.
whats the point of not having pressure sensitivity. Its just the same as any other old stylus then

Hi Thank you about this video. I just wonder if I wanna check the battery left about the pencil(USB-C), It is the only way to connect with I pad? or I just can check it on widget without any connection like fairing thing...??
You can check it on the settings of your ipad
Or add the widget
I actually like it that it doesn't charge while attached to iPad so it doesn't over change the battery. Wish they made this design from the beginning.
Wait, that's a thing? Doesn't the Apple pencil just turn off charging?
it doesnt over charge
@@um4ryno but it’s constantly draining iPad battery
@@Lola36230 The Apple Pencil is around 1.1% of any iPad's battery capacity. It won't drain it at all, especially since it never really goes below 80% during normal use I find.
@@Lola36230actually, it does not. as soon is charge stops draining the ipads power. Besides, it's not like takes 80% of your iPad battery 😶🙄
To use the pencil is it needed to be USB C connecter all the time or does it impairs with the iPad?
You can connect it once to pair with your ipad, unless you restart your ipad
@@annalynm.6115 so you dont have to pair them with the cable every time you use it, right?
@@pbibss5673 no just once then use it normally, unless you restart your ipad. But it happened to me once that I need to restart the ipad but upon checking the pencil is still connected
i don't underestand what's new about this "new" apple pencil?
90 euros for non pressure sensitive stylus is ridiculous, it`s priced similarly to high end wacom styluses with 8k pressure levels.
if it was 50 euros it could be acceptable but nah
iPad 10th gen (Oct 2022) is only compatible with Apple Pencil (USB-C) OR Apple Pencil 1st gen WITH a USB-C adaptor. Weird that it isn't compatible with Apple Pencil 2nd Generation. I was curious about WHY Apple created this iteration that seems like a backward step, and was expecting that it would be MORE backward compatible than it is. My husband suggested that the USB-C option is to make it compliant with European regulations, which is probably true. And, as you mentioned, it is a more economical choice. For me, (especially by finding that one seller who discounts the Apple Pencil second generation) the Apple Pencil 2nd gen is the only logical option - sometimes it is more cost effective to buy the upgraded product ONCE, instead of repent and buy the upgraded product after having purchased the basic model! (But, seriously, Apple does some weird and dumb cost-cutting maneuvers on their premium priced products - NO cable? Really?)
Kind of disappointed they did not give this one a pressure sensitivity feature, as an artist.
That was the only way they could make it cheaper. The first and 2nd Gen Apple Pencils have those features so if you need that, get these.
KISS solution for normals who just want to take notes, or do simple drawing tasks.
I just got one and I use it at school and the noise tapping on the screen is really annoying !!
Try to use paper like screen protector.
can you use it while it is charging?
yeah
But does it write while changing
It should
Why couldn’t they just make the 10th gen ipad compatible with all pencils?
money
Go Browns!!!
can i use this with the ipad 10?
Yes, its really meant for the iPad 10
Interesting take on the new pencil. Luckily, I am a stylus moto g user.
I have a ninth generation iPad so with the lighting port, if I were to buy an Apple Pencil USB-C can I connect it to the iPad using the iPad charger cable? the cable has 2 ports, a lighting (which goes into the ipad) and a usb-c (the one that goes directly into the charger). If I were to use that cable would I have any problems or incompatibilities between the pen and the iPad?
one of the biggest doubt for me tooo
I think you can't use it even tho you have the cable. It only supports the 10th gen and higher (written on the Website of Apple)
Better off buying gen 1 if your planing to keep your 9th gen ipad
It says in the apple website that is not compatible with 9th gen
It wouldn’t work because its old
No pressure sensitivity then it's a garbage.
100%😅
i have an apple 10 generation pad but this pencil is not working what should i do?
Me too and I don’t understand why
wrong pencil for your ipad, you need 1st gen with an adapter
@@martazoa2736wrong pencil for your ipad, you need 1st gen with an adapter
@@sqphviewdym its compatible with 10th gen
I am using 10th gen, you have to connect it first using the usb cable to connect with the pen
Apple Pencil 2 is always on sale for $89. Much better value than this new pencil.
Of course it is, but it is not compatible with the 10th gen iPad…not to mention the fact that it is more expensive in other countries, which can cause greater price differences. Otherwise, if my iPad was compatible with the second gen, I would have definitely bought it, but it is not, so I bought the USB-C version.
@@avaar8099 the first gen pencil is still a better option just because it has pressure sensitivity. There is no real value of getting this new one other than the name brand. The apple pencil was always the best option for ipad mainly due to the pressure sensitivity. Without it, theres no difference between it and another off brand stylus
@@avaar8099does it work well? i want it for study
I got on in Iraq it was 750 dinnars😊😊😊😊😊 5:39
$50 would be a better price
So I can't use it with 9th Gen iPad.
Yes you can
I find it interesting that it’s comparable with any newer iPad even though it’s the most compatible with the 10th generation.
How it did not work with me
what ipad do you have? could be wrong ipad
I use the Apple Pencil 2, never liked the first generation, I really don’t see who this pencil is for?
for people with a iPad 10th gen
For people who wants 70% of apple pencil 2
@@matthiasverfaille7451 apple pencil 1 is much better for pressure sensitivity
i bought the 2nd gen pencil for my new ipad air 5, and i thought NO WAY I JUST BOUGHT THE MORE EXPENSIVE ONE. turns out this one doesnt have the same features, now im still happy with my 2nd gen apple pencil.
Apple just really can’t get a handle on how to charge an Apple Pencil. We’ve had so many different versions it’s honestly ludicrous
Anyone else buy an apple Pencil and almost never use it except to sign things?
I honestly use mine everyday. 😅
These are mostly for college students and artists
This pisses me off severely. I bought an Apple Pencil 2 today for my 10th gen just to find out it doesn't work with the 10th gen even though it works with my daughter's older iPad mini. Awesome. I already have a Pencil 1 that I've been using but I'm tired of having to pair it with a USB C adapter, I wanted the ease of use that comes with simply attaching it magnetically to the side. But, no. Apparently landscape cameras and snap-on keyboards are more important and the 10th gen iPad was released without the capability of using a stylus that attaches magnetically. Completely backwards. Seriously. Ain't NO goddamn way I'm pairing or charging a fucking stylus with a USB cable in 2024.
So the reviewers of ipad 10 were full of it with their conspiracy theories 😮
Dude just buy two, unbox one without filming first to plan your recorded unboxing...
second comment, but who cares 😶🌫️
First comment !!!
I hate it
ipad 10 and this pen are the biggest shit of apple
This thing is a piece of crap. swapping it for a 1st gen pencil for my 10th gen iPad so I can actually use procreate. I can't even swap it and give it to my kid because he can't use it on his 6th gen iPad. What a dumb design. WHY doesn't the 2nd Gen pencil work on the 10th gen iPad? What is apple doing?
I need this quick 😩🫣
Were buy i m from.
can i use this with the ipad 10?
Yes
You can.
