    Patti's voice is a force of nature. It's sad that she never got the credit she deserved by the music industry. But when it comes to an ability to move an audience with the sheer power of voice Patti La Belle is in a class by herself. And no one and I mean no one can touch her. Even though time has taken some of her power she is still a force to reckon with. Aretha maybe the Queen of Soul, but Miss Patti is a Goddess.

      Patti Labelle is the Godmother of Soul though. She was given that title some years ago. Aretha is the Queen of Soul, Patti Labelle is the Godmother of Soul, and Gladys Knight is the Empress of Soul. And in the 80s they did give her the title of either the Godmother or the Queen of Rock n Soul, because in the 80s and even in the early early 90s during a little period of time Patti did a couple of songs that had a bit of a rock edge to them! And she did them and did them WELL, because she had such a PIERCING voice! I wish she would’ve did more rock type songs!

    • @melregissings
      @melregissings Před 2 lety +1

      Why do you have to mention Aretha? No need to slight the queen in order to lift up Patti. Anyway, Patti was always renown for her powerful performances and vocal acrobats. Her recordings didn't move people the way her performances did. That's why she blew up in popularity during the 80s the height of live television.

    • @newman8180
      @newman8180 Před 2 lety +4

      @@melregissings First of all I was not slighting Aretha. I called her the Queen of Soul because that's what she is. Just because I called Patti a goddess doesn't mean I was disrespecting Aretha. So the question is why are you trying to make a mess out of something that wasn't intended to be. But I do have to agree that Patti in the studio is not as powerful as Patti live and uninhibited. Most of Patti's best performances have been performed live.

    Great review, I agree no one has that kind of projection live or otherwise. I have seen her live 15 times since the 80's and yes she can go higher and has been singing for over 750 years. LOL There is an acapella version of her performing, Something in the Air Tonight by Phil Collins from the late 80's simple stunning. You asked if there was anyone who could be heard when she hits her high notes. There is a video with her and Teena Marie singing Somebody Loves You Baby from the 90's and she mates Patti's projection and volume. Please check it out.

    • @KajiVocals
      @KajiVocals Před 2 lety +2

      Shirley Bassey does. And quite larger actually. Patti's projection is largely in her head voice. She wouldn't be able to project her midrange like that because of her approach. She'd lose her higher belts if she did. Patti is a high soprano singing big. It seems massive to us because barely anyone in pop actually has proper projection. Patti's friend Angela Winbush has a similar projection as well. Teena whom you mentioned has a higher and smaller voice than Patti but still projects well.

      @@KajiVocals
      I honestly think it's all the hollering that makes her belts big in that E5-G5 range. She approaches her notes like she yells. It worked for her for a while. The headvoice "woop" is baptist/gospel and probably some classical approach because she sang standards on the early Bluebells days.
      High belting is a different technique altogether. Probably rooted in gospel. I'm sure opera soprano singers use totally different techniques for notes above the soprano passagio. Most gospel sopranos have G5 for days, and go to C6 using a mixing belt technique, which is essentially a mastery of screaming but with focus 😂
      If I try to imitate what Patti does, the best I can describe is It's attempting to control a very high yell 😂
      Both Mahalia and Patti were/are accused of screaming but both use that same technique for belting. Their technique makes that yelling sound good.
      Christina Aguilera screams without a focus or support, rather. Compare her to say Lashaun Pace or Karen. She wouldn't make it in a battle for the long hall 🤣 her throat would give out.
      It sounds like yelling because it is based on it. But RnB, Soul, Gospel called for that style for the messaging.
      Both Patti and Mahalia can give "clean" vocals with that style, though. Check out Mahalia "Lord's Prayer" in the studio.
      Rick James also has a nice tenor voice. I don't think he's trained, though.

    • @melregissings
      @melregissings Před 2 lety +1

      Patti's sound is heavy at the top but it's not as resonate as some other high belters. There's a video of her belting with Natalie Cole. Natalie's voice had more ring at the top but not as heavy as Patti's. Heaviness doesn't mean more volume. But it sounds like it's louder because of the force. Starting around G5 Patti's belts start to lose tone. The notes are still big and easily accessible, but it lacks that clear piercing tone that you would here in a young Aretha or young Whitney. Patti's head voice is very big for a pop singer. Not too many in pop who can sing louder than her in head voice.

    • @melregissings
      @melregissings Před 2 lety +1

      @2:37 is exactly what I'm talking about. very heavy belt, but lacks tonal clarity because of placement.

    Let me tell you about that head voice Patti is sneaky because she holds that back. I was on stage with her once at The Rockport Music Festival in Massachusetts, and I thought I was cute. I tried to hit that head voice note. SHE pulled her microphone away from her mouth held it at arms length away and hit a note in full voice, a whistle note but it was loud .
    If she had that Mike to her mouth she would've busted my ear drums.
    She just winked at me and finished singing, the song. That song was If the shoe 👠 was on the other foot.
    ALL I could do was wipe the drool off my face. That was around 1998
    Been completely bald ever since .
    I believe Too close to heaven is one of the songs from the musical that she starred in on Broadway, Yourr arms too short to box with God!

    • @melregissings
      @melregissings Před 2 lety +5

      I don't think she has the musical ear to execute a lot of complex runs. Patti was more focused on tone, power, and range. She's not thinking much about melody or lyric when approaching a song. That's what made her different from Aretha or Gladys.

    Patti DID have classical training briefly (as a lyric soprano, not dramatic funnily enough). As from singers who would not be drowned out by Patti - Shirley Bassey. She would actually overpower her. But in terms of singers she dueted with. I can only think of Michael Bolton who managed to not be overpowered.
