Many families have welcomed new PCs into their homes, thanks to back-to-school and Labor Day sales, leaving older computers to be donated, recycled, or sold. That makes this a good time to learn how to perform a factory reset.
What is a factory reset? That's when you wipe your computer's hard drive and reinstall its operating system. Doing this reverts your computer to its pristine state, deleting all your personal information, applications, and files in the process.
Getting rid of a computer without performing a reset could put your data in the wrong hands-and you and your family at risk for identity theft.
If you're planning to sell your old computer because you're moving to a new system, or you're trying to make some extra cash to afford a more premium device (such as the Dell XPS 13, Surface Laptop 2, or Huawei MateBook X Pro, preparing the old hardware is a necessary process to prevent giving away your personal information to a stranger. You'll also need to make sure the device is working correctly to get the most money while avoiding problems with the buyer.
When preparing a device, there are three main steps you want to do for a successful sale. The first step involves creating a backup, so you don't lose your files. Second, you want to wipe out the drive using a secure method to make sure you've removed your personal information and applications beyond recovery, and install a clean copy of Windows 10 to resolve performance and other potential issues. And the third and final step involves deciding how to sell the old computer, and crafting a good product listing if you choose to go with an online service.
In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to prepare for selling your desktop, laptop, or tablet without compromising your personal information, or giving away costly software.
Before you give away a computer, you should make sure that your most private, sensitive files are irretrievable. You don't want them to fall into the wrong hands.
But that's not all. You should also return the hard drive to its factory condition, so that the new owner can set it up as they choose.
Let's discuss both topics.
Securely wipe sensitive files
If a file contains information that you'd rather not fall into criminal hands (or government hands), merely deleting that file isn't sufficient--even if you empty the recycle bin. Deleted files can be restored with simple, free software.
Instead, you should wipe those files--overwriting them with new, meaningless data. As a general rule, the more times the file's former location on the drive surface is overwritten, the more secure the wipe.
This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 operating system (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba,Lenovo, and Samsung). - Věda a technologie

thank you for for getting right to the point. very simple steps never knew windows added basically a factory reset option
You should have toggled the Data Erasure option to the "On" position if you wanted to do a more secure reset. With it turned "Off" you removed the pointers to the files, but you did not erase the files.
@@-TheRealCozmik- yeah but it is more safe
That doesn't make it more secure, in fact all that does is remove your files. With it off it actually goes through your drive and overwrites all the data which is way more secure but as it says it takes a while to do.
@@ExySmexy SO after resetting wont recovery tool be able to get data on it?
@@commonsenseii nope
Excellent explanation, very useful, but I have just one doubt, and in case you have multiple disks, doesn't it just erase the disk where windows is installed? thanked
This man knows his stuff. Followed every step and it fixed my computer 🤓 awesome , 💯💯% guarantee 👍
Glad to help
Do you need to reinstall the drivers?
Very helpful!! Thank you sir !
Thank you. That's exactly what I needed
Glad it helped!
So I the information is on 2 or 3 different computers, laptops if you do this on 1 will it do it to just the one you do it to or all
After wiping my computer, it says: "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key." Is this normal? I just want to make sure that someone is going to be able to set it up for their self, and that they're not going to be able to use my Windows license. Would there be any issue?
Does this whipe every hard drive or just the one with windows on it
I built my own pc and I wanted to sell it for some profit and I wanted to keep the drivers for the buyer will resetting the pc delete those driver files?
Would this deleted Drivers and windows 10?
It worked. You saved the day. Thanks so much.
You're welcome!
Guessing I did something wrong. After Windows reinstalled itself, it still came up with my profile name at the start screen. And on top of that, it won't take my PIN to log in and see what I might have done wrong. I can't do anything with it beyond the start screen except to restart, sleep, or turn off.
Help?
What keyboard you use ?
Is that backgournd pic from Darrington WA?

And is it can be recovered ??:

Hi, I have an old machine I want to give to a friend for his kids. If I follow this process, when they turn it on, will it be like a new pc and they will be able to register it to themselves etc? Or would I need to buy them a new copy of windows and do a fresh install? Thank you for the help.
New copy of windows and a fresh install
Thanks man, sure is helpful.
You're welcome!
I don't have those options on my Toshiba Windows Vista Home Premium (that i can find). And no "repair computer" option. It only allows me to system restore, but no apparent options to factory reset to prepare for laptop donation. C drive in system properties just takes me another way to system restore tha t does not make it donation ready. Is there another way to set laptop for donation? Thanks!
Do you know if your computer has a propriatary CD disc or something?
Does this also delete all my account passwords like social media password, steam account password which I'm logged in with?

Does the person buying your computer need a windows 10/11 key or no? I’m about to sell my old PC to a friend of mine but I’m not sure if they’ll need a key or not
I am wondering that too
No they don't, usually the OS key is linked to the motherboard (for laptops). You just need to remove the device from your Microsoft account and that's it
I’m at selling mine an building a new one how can I keep the files and put them in my new pc
Dylan get another hard drive (external) and back-up everything.
Dylan that’s what I’m doing atm aswell
OneDruve
I wiped my pc via a free tool bitraser file eraser so that no one can recover my personal documents.
Thanks man😊😊
Glad it helped
Just put every file on a flashdrive!
Can someone recover even after this using a recovery tool?
I reset my laptop myself sorta this way and yes you can still recover but it takes alot of mucking around and you have to have some idea of what your doing so if you sell it to someone that isn't tech savvy you should be fine
can someone (like the FBI does) go into the laptop and dig info out of my old laptop - like bank info, and more?
Can someone just recover your files?
you didn't finish the tutorial... could you click the "Reset" button so I may see what happens? Thank you :)

Nice
You're welcome!
I had a black screen when logging out any tips
1 year later still no help
It’s alright
It turns out that I had a virus in my computer, but it’s alright now
1 year, still no reply
3y later, still no help
This won’t take long 20 minutes later still saying same thing
Golden Rule for selling your computer. Never sell your computer with the original SSD/HDD included. Remove the current SSD/HDD that you are using. Buy a new one and install windows on it. Never ever take the risk of your sensitive files being recovered even if you secure delete it. SSD's are cheaper these days. You can buy a 512gb or 1TB for an affordable amount and a clear peace of mind along the way. For selling your phones, I never sell or give out my phones. I wait for it to die on its own before buying a new one. I just couldn't take the risk of my personal files like passports, ids to be recovered.
How can the data from ssd/hdd be recovered tho
@@cozymeru this is done by ripping of ssd silicon wafers and passing light through them then noticing changes in light and counting 0s and 1s and then using binary decompilers and other things.
What to do after the phone dies?
@@kaigyuro8033 just throw it
If i remove my hdd is that all or do I have to take all my information off or is taking hdd out enough?
Good video but you seriously need a new mic.
Glad to help.
First
Thanks
