Chaos Over Amsterdam! - Second VATSIM Flight in the 737-800 - EHAM to EGKK

  • Today we take our second flight on Vatsim in the Boeing 737-800 from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport (EHAM) back to Gatwick (EGKK).
    Looking back, this was possibly not the greatest route to have chosen for a first flight. It was incredibly busy and I felt like I barely had a moment to catch a breath. Maybe a longer flight next time!
    My thanks to the controllers for their patience and special shoutout to the Amsterdam radar controller, it was busy!
    I use the “Thrustmaster TCA Sidestick Airbus Edition” joystick when I fly Airbus and the "Thrustmaster TCA Yoke Boeing Editing" when I'm flying Boeing, or anything that uses a yoke, along with the “Thrustmaster TCA QUADRANT AIRBUS Edition” throttle quadrant with a set of Logitech Flight Rudder Pedals.

    I was your London Control (South) controller. I just about remember your flight. The more you fly, the more you know what to expect what ATC will say. Best of luck!

    Expedite climb means increase your rate of climb. You can switch over to vertical speed mode and input a rate manually, but I prefer to select the MAX RATE button on the CLB page of the FMC and let VNAV do the calculation. Then when ATC calls later to resume normal rate you can cancel.

    • @agentwolf1297
      @agentwolf1297 Před 7 měsíci +2

      Also a couple of other suggestions; I noticed your PTT was on the side stick not the yoke; I have the same setup as you with the TCA yoke and the airbus stick and throttle and I suggest using vJoy to assign a virtual input to both the trigger on the yoke and on the side stick so they can both act as PTT buttons. Also, if you are willing to invest in new hardware, the Logitech radio panel is a dream for VATSIM and makes switching frequencies so much easier.

    You can connect GSX already for the push. And when you are cleared for push and start, just release parking brake and you are ready to go. So there won't be much time between clearance and the pushback.

  • @Ashleigh_T
    @Ashleigh_T Před 7 měsíci +5

    @7:50 when he asked to expedite climb when passing FL100, the controller is asking you to keep the same V/S after you pass FL100 rather than the normal accelerating from 250kts. This is because to accelerate from 250kts (to 287kts in your case) levels off your climb. Likely there was traffic nearby at that altitude, so he didn't want you leveling off to accelerate yet. The way to perform this quickly, would be to just hit the speed intervention button when he requested to expedite. Then you would have maintained an indicated speed of 250kts with a climb at approximately 3800fpm (that you were doing at the time) rather than what happened where it reduced to 700fpm to accelerate. Then when he said "normal rate again", hit the VNAV button to allow the aircraft to start accelerating on the new climb profile.

    This channel is exactly what is needed for someone thinking of flying with Vatsim. Too many channels tell you how to do it once they have been doing it for a fair while whilst this channel shows you the pitfalls once you start, oh and the short flights are the best to get used to the flow think of it like rubbing the belly whilst rubbing your head, Brilliant flight from two difficult airspaces.

    In Amsterdam Schiphol you always taxi on the right side if there are parallel taxi ways, thats why the atc didn't say bravo. It should give you that information somewhere on your charts. So Schiphol = always right side taxi!

    Best way to learn my friend is to be thrown in the deep end, or at least this is what my Dad did for me at the swimming pool, I learnt to swim Though!!
    AirNott, i can't recommend highly enough to you 'Vatsim Radio' You, like me are a Vatsim Noob, and this has helped me out no end. No need to plan future Freq's as you can see who is online and what your next controller will be, then you just click on the Freq needed and it will put it the Active or Standby radio Freq on the aircraft. Flying these Jets without the help of a 1st officer is bloody difficult, and when on Vatsim at busy time, and you on Final, last thing you want to do is Dive down to the radio panel.
    Bloody well done though. When i land and come off Vatsim, i am literally sweating and have the hand shakes, but it is a great achievement.
    PS. It also helped me to listen in on Vatsim as an 'Observer' at a busy time on a Tower/Controller or Appr. You learn the lingo, learn that other people make silly mistakes, and often have a good laugh at some of the controllers comments to us lowely pilots.

    One thing I've heard, no need to say "with you" but I probably will. I guess it would just be something like "XYZ approach, Ryanair 226 flight level 140 descending level 110" or similar

    Remember to follow the Standard Taxi Procedures in EHAM unless advised by the controller. Taxiways move only oneway like the one you took on Bravo but can't take Bravo from the opposite direction. I have had Ground telling me "Eurowings and RynAir are waiting for you to taxi" and will ask them to follow me till the Apron.

    Well done on your first two flights, an impressive start! Showing it on CZcams will also help many other beginners!
    Just to add to the many great tips that have already been given: stay ahead of the plane and plan your next steps: what actions to perform next, what is the routing going to be like (altitude/speed restrictions, climb/descend) and so on.
    Keep monitoring the systems to see if the plane is doing what it should be doing (as you found out when the glidepath wasn't capturing, well caught!).
    Listening out to instructions given to traffic ahead of you also helps, you might be given the same shortly.
    Also, prepare the flight by looking up airport briefings on the various VATSIM sites of the airport you are flying in and out of, they often contain important notes about restrictions and procedures.
    Schiphol for example uses a one-way taxi system with taxiway Bravo going counter-clockwise, which you would have been able to see on the parking stands chart, the (useful) Navigraph diagram that you used for taxiing does not show that.
    Maybe try doing some longer routes for your next flights (1,5 - 2 hours) to give you some breathing time between departure and arrivals? The two routes you've done now are quite challenging because everything happens very fast. Oh, and when first contacting a controller, don't forget to start your transmission by stating the name of who you are contacting (xxx Ground, xxx Tower, and so on).
    Good luck on your next flights and enjoy!

    • @AirNOTT
      @AirNOTT  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Wow, thank you for such a thoughtful reply. Yes, I think you’re right, next time, a longer route is required! Still confused as to why the plane didn’t pick up the glideslope, weird!

    I love the video AirNOTT, Im someone who is thinking of getting into MFSF and Vatsim so watching videos like yours is really helpful. One thing I noticed (i say this as a complete novice so I could be wrong) I think the aircraft didn't capture the glideslope on landing as you only had 1 of the 2 autopilots engaged, I think for autoland you need both CMD A and CMD B engaged for it to work. but otherwise, you did really good and I'm looking forward to your next video! If this was really your second VATSIM flight, you're way ahead of where I was....I'm now at about 113 hours on the network. I targeted taking 20 flights before making any judgement calls on whether VATSIM was for me. Now I feel bored if I *don't* fly on VATSIM. 🙂
    Re: frequency changes, I was once flying into KBUR, and was being directed by SOCAL approach. Usually I watch the frequencies on the VPilot app to see what is available, but I didnt' this time. I was hand-flying my PMDG 737 on visual approach, and was told at about 6 miles to switch to Burbank Approach, which I didn't even know existed, let alone came online a few minutes prior. It was hairy trying to dial in a frequency with autopilot off...I was hearing "glideslope" warnings! I really should have gone around or maybe said "UNABLE to switch frequencies, SHORT FINAL", but somehow managed to contact BUR approach, got cleared to land at 3 miles out, and land on a very short runway (~5000 feet).
    I really like the feature on the EFB for the FBW A320 where it shows active VATSIM frequencies nearby, and you can instantly tune your radio to it.

    Important: READ what is written at the very top of the SID Charts ...There are important numbered instructions like if you have to stay on TWR Freq or not ..EHAM, EDDH and a lot of others require to change from TWR to APP by yourself e.g after passing 2000 ft ... EHAM has its own page for Depature Instructions (10-3) .....And being on ground at major Airports: Dont just LOOK on the Ground Charts... READ the Instructions on the GEN, DEP, ARR Pages ... what is the way how they handle Push-Back, Taxiing e.g.... :) But, nicely done at all !
