I thoroughly enjoyed this video. So often the videos on CZcams demonstrating movements like turn on the fore, turn on the haunches and side pass are done using horses that already know the movements so as a viewer and someone who wants to teach their horse, it is difficult to see the progression from the horse not knowing, to learning, to completing. I thought you did this really well and I have definitely learned from it. Now I am exciting to go and practice it!

Thank you for this video. I watched it in the past but I am ready for this exercise with my mare. I love that you have a horse that is not perfect at it. I find a lot of videos on youtube where the horse has already mastered the movement and I don't see the struggle with teaching. I need to see the struggle with teaching because that is where I will be when I start with my horse. Thank you for teaching.

thank you so much! this video was very helpful. and thank you for using a horse that doesn't know the exercise so it will be easier for us watchers too.

That was very helpful. I've been working (or trying to work) this exercise with my horse. I get it now. I'm guessing it will be easier for both of us with this info!

I realized how old this is but I had a trainer work with me and my paint mare few months ago and all of this just clicks and lines right up with what he taught me and it's really cool

Very very helpful to me thank you so much for posting this. However somehow I managed to leave out the whip and ask her to move with my hands.

Excellent video! Broken down very well. Great that you pointed out the prerequisite before attempting to teach this. Many hear they need to teach something but don’t know what to do first which only causes confusion and frustration.

This is slightly random but the first few seconds with the camera behind the horse for a side pass was really useful visually for me with this whole stepping under business. Thanks for that bit of the clip! :)

Thanks for this video, my pony new pony has voice commands but doesn’t side pass and I wasn’t sure where to start. I’m looking forward to working her again and seeing how she goes with the yielding.

What would you do with a horse that completely ignores a whip or crop?

    • @somesleepyhorsesandme8801
      @somesleepyhorsesandme8801 Před 5 lety

Equestrian_Taylor210 I would definitely get them to respect the equipment first. I have the same problem with my filly, so before I do anything I make it very clear that the whip is an extension of my hand and she needs to listen to and respect it.

I'm just saying but I wouldn't hold the lead rope like that because about 3 years ago my friends horse bolted when she was holding the lead rope like that and it took off her entire finger.

This is a very helpful video!! How old is this mare? Could I do this method with my horse? She is 2yrs 10mo old, would she be mature enough in the mind to handle this sort of thing? She is still young in mind and body. I will try this with her and if she doesn't do to well at first then maybe I'll wait a little longer. My girl is a Quarab and has roughly the same attitude as this mare does. Pushy and stubborn at times. Thank you!

As another commenter has mentioned, my horse also refuses to respond to any pressure from a whip or crop. I can yield him with pressure from my fingers, however, he won't respond to the tap of a whip. What can be done in that case?

if you break your steps down, and train the horse to move off a light touch, you won't have to 'rap' your horse, which was annoying/stressing her, and stressing me every time you rapped her.
I personally don't ever want to train my horse to raise the head and chase away from a whip. Natural Horsemanship is just a gentler spin off the old Western Breaking.

this is not a side pass, this is moving sideways, in a side pass the horse is bent and striding into the bend.

flying notes movind sideways and a sidepass is the same thing

Very helpful but seriously no need to whack her like that. Remember she's learning & probably getting frustrated too.
