I think he knew. He knew it was one of the archival staff, and it wasn’t Sasha or him, and no one in the world except Peter Lukas is capable of being attracted to Elias, so I think that very serious and slightly sad sounding tone in Tim’s voice was because he knew it was Jon and he knew Jon is quite unkind to Martin at that point in the story, so he’s literally telling Martin that Jon will never see him as an equal if he keeps bending over backwards, and to not give too much of himself away to someone who isn’t reciprocating
this is what reading fanfiction is for, it makes it much easier to pretend TMA was an office comedy and not... all of that horrendous stuff (the amount of everybody lives/no one dies fics is sure to make most if not all TMA fans happy if one knows how to avoid the ones that they do not wish to see)
