Got to admit it. My grandpa in Mindanao own a Spanish Mauser which is a family treasure when the Spanish arrived in the Philippines he was a rebel fighting of the Spaniards when the Spanish introduced the Mauser rifles to the Philippines he was lucky enough to get one from dead Spanish soldiers which he kept treasured and passed on to our generation
Does it still fire? The tropical environment of the Philippines makes old rifles rot.
Yes but the ammunition box that carry the original rounds where soaked by water and some may not fire because it was stored for to long cause the bullets to rust
The box is wooden.. So expect the ammo quality not good but the rifle is in good shape my grandpa loved it he always keep it clean everyday when his still alive
My father is the holder of it unfortunately he used it in the mountains of Sulu and northeastern Mindanao command his a soldier by the way. I don't know where he found bullets that works. Probably he used the good ones then reused it
Do you know if your Abuelo was in the Philippines long enough to fight both the Spanish & the U.s. army?
37:38 'We have a thing of rare beauty and we have Mae'
oof, that burn
That's the second time I've heard him say that. One of these days Mae is going to dope slap him.
I don't think Mae is so fragile. @@jimvandemoter6961
Square bottomed bolts make the Mauser world go round.
Nice. Freddie would be proud
😂😂😂😂😂
Great Queen reference…now i want to go listen to it..;)
Some 1893/33 rifles still saw service in the Korean War under the Turkish brigade. There's a photo of them still using their WW1-era German mauser webbing. They had the bonus of using enemy 8mm ammunition from the Chinese. One commander was even a Gallipoli veteran.
They showed up with their Mausers but were quickly issued M1 Garands and taken into the US supply system as they were attached to the US 25th Division.
I know, right? Why wouldn't you use M1 Garands if they were available? @@Mike-tw1pi
@@GeneralJackRipper Bad lubricants + cold weather? That and rifle grenades are pretty much the only disadvantages the M1 Garand has to a 1893 Mauser.
@@hailexiao2770 The M1 had a rifle grenade attachment.
Well, that and the ubiquitous "BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, PING," mode of operation.
@@GeneralJackRipper The M1 did have a grenade attachment, but since it didn't have an adjustable/automatic gas system and bullet trap rifle grenades didn't exist at the time, you had to put a blank round in the chamber, and doing so with the en-bloc system is tricky. In a Mauser you just open up the action, jam the blank in the magazine and close.
As for the PING, nobody really hears it in combat, and even if they did your buddies are still firing anyway, so it's not like the enemy can actually take advantage.
"Everyone thinks we're experts. But we're just determined idiots"
I need this paraphrased for a Tattoo
Extra fresh C&Rsenal. Smells like cosmoline, and cordite. I love it :)
My god I love these videos I'm glad I'm off work
Sapper 12b I actually watch these at work 😬
If anyone is interested, the music playing while Mae was shooting is "Nikriz Longa"
@Canadian Metis Man I think the music is right since they are not looking into ww1 era rifles, but older ones.
Also getting pre 1923 recordings is painful
Tolga, thanks for the info. I really like the period music. it adds another layer to the narrative.
@@jimvandemoter6961 you are welcome
What cosplay costume did you wear for the Project Lightening?
I personally can't wait until you get out of the restrains of ww1. I love what you guys have done so far, and I'm still very excited for everything coming for ww1, but I believe your videos will be improved once you don't have to worry about staying within the scope of the first world war (such as covering the BAR but restricting yourselves to the original version). I'd love to see some second wold war content obviously, but even older episodes like the Dreyse or from neutral powers like the swiss guns would be some excellent content.
I like the WWI basis, because it covers the basis of modern fire arms: it's a great jumping off point, from a historical perspective.
I know it's not rare, but my 8mm converted Turk 1893 gets run hard and it's been an absolute champ. Even handles hot ammo like a champ. No signs of lug setback or anything.
I just found you and this video. I love the old long guns. I could geek out on this shit all day.
There goes my afternoon!
34:51 I can confirm as a person who has read about the Gallipoli Front in WW1. Some landing attempts in the peninsula failed due to well-positioned Ottoman soldiers, also Ottomans were in the upper hand in terms of snipers at that front, according to the resources. A certain Sergeant Yahya managed to hold off a landing conducted by the ship HMS Lord Nelson by only himself and his 67 men, for 32 hours, until every single soldier in this small unit is either dead or wounded, including the sergeant himself. The British landing force consisted of about 3,000 troops.
Currently on my honeymoon in Hong Kong. Looks like the wife is gonna have to give me an hour.
Congrats!
Should have set it to play at a faster speed.
@Boomstick McNugget Hong Kong has actually gotten really nice recently, nothing like it was in the 90s, it's much more like Singapore nowadays, very nice and very clean
An hour!? That's not really fair considering you'll only be giving her about 30 seconds. 🤣🥒🐱🕰👎🏻
Just kidding. I'm sure you're phenomenal in the sack. I saw the shot and had to take it. Internet banter. Seriously tho, congrats.
Tom You are joking right?
I'd rather not arm wrestle Mae, I've seen her positive push/pull action for demonstration!
Plus her ability to force the bolt where it should be, awesome Mae!!
I assume Mark Novak repairs you finds that are few and far between!
This is my favorite Mauser channel by far! Hit the like folks. This man works hard to give us such great content.
Othias, I was planning to go to bed early but noted your new video, so not tonight! Your work is simply awesome and I enjoy every video you make.
I love all the history behind these video. Very through with the information
In glad my money is backing this channel 👌 another stunning video! Great work C&Rsenal team 👏👏👏👏
Thank you, very impressive. I learned my history from you. Amazing knowledge you have.
Gotta love and other video for my drive home. You guys are awesome keep up the good work!
Better Catch Phrase (for this episode): "And Paul Mauser Got Busy."
Mae is correct: A gorgeous rifle. And another wonderful C&Rsenal video production--makes me glad that I got fired last week to catch up with THE BEST DEEP DIVE GUN HISTORY SHOW EVER.
Othias, I think we could spend the rest of our lives researching-producing-and-watching "The Mauser", and not run out of material.
An old teacher I had had the great definition of the term "Expert". X is the algebraic expression for an unknown. A spurt is a drip under pressure, Thus an Xpert is an unknown drip under pressure. Actually, i don't know of anyone with a better understanding of great war arms then Othais. Thanks for another great episode.
Loved that last minute!
I love the channel. I also subbed just now, even though I'm sure I was subscribed and belled. Keep going you galz and guyz!
I missed this one, awesome!
Damn... I was hoping to hear more about the Spanish mauser... I have one that was a Spanish American war bring back...
Excellent instructional video! The music helped you visualize the troops on line… the smell of cordite/smoke/flies and camel dung. Looking at one of these rifles right now! 👍🏼
I have a 1893 Turkish Mauser that has been converted to 8mm given the new sight and hole through the stock and magazines cutoff switch cut off and the block still there but is straight wristed. Love the gun cause its super smooth shoots light and is just a joy to shoot plus ive hit 650m with it
Great video as usual. A great way to start my weekend. :) (Shift worker, so today is my Friday night)
wow this is a really beautiful gun
Holy crap...put that catch phrase on a T-shirt! Love it
Great video. I actually bought one of these for 100 buck a few years ago. Great to get the info! Thanks!
@C&Rsenal could you guys mention what wood type and finishes were applied on the model you are reviewing?
Thanks,
Love the channel!
The Automen Empire? ROBOTS!? ROBOTTOMANS!?

I'm just thinking about the Cybermen from Doctor Who with fezes on their heads.
Love all these vids but cant wait for the 1911 vid. My very favorite pistol!!!!!!
O lord, the worst thing here is: Seeing there is a new C&Rsenal video, I can't watch it since I gotta leave for work... I guess i'll just enjoy it even more once i'll come back from my 11hrs shift.
Still, looking foward this, good job, C&Rsenal, as usual - u guys roche! (rock in French) * litteral term mind you.
Was just about to sit down to watch some anime on Crunchyroll, than this notification popped up. I guess anime is going to have to wait.
I like where your priorities lie.
Is that like japanimation?
Mike, that is so cool! I just discovered Crunchyroll. I've been an anime fan since the video tape days. The first tape I bought was Akira in 1989. After that I got stuff that's even older. I'm old school.
Question: You stated extractor was not 'snap over' yet you were dropping round into feed way and bolt readily closed.
Question 2: I know this is post WW1, but many of these upgraded to 7.92x57mm (as well as the Commission 88)are these safe to shoot the 7.92 round? BTW: Ian did a piece on some very hot Turkish 8mm, that damaged self loaders. Should this be avoided in those Turkish bolt guns?
I got a question. What is the status of the chauchet with your show?
Oh well work will have to wait. Lucky there are no bosses on 3rd shift.
Could you do a video about the Spanish mausers? M1895 cavalry carbine please!
Have y’all released any posters showing Mae hip firing that MG? Will you be? Was it a German Watercooled? Please, do tell!
I have a Spainish m1916 Mauser in 7.62x51 if you're interested in using in a video it have the Guadia civil mark on it
those are the(a) bomb! lol
My m43 spanish mauser has the same mark
Best catchphrase :D
this show is better than something youd see on pbs
Keep it up othais
This is a little late, but I've read in David Stone's The Kaiser's Army that the Mauser 98 can fire up to 30 rounds a minute. It is no surprise the Ottoman soldiers were able to put a high volume of fire into British/ANZAC lines. This this also shows how well trained they were.
Just bought one of these, it’s hella front heavy!
18:50
HA got ya!!! The 1903 Springfield has one! And i thought the asme thing, that it was the only Mauser with a cutoff, till i got a 1903 ottoman and found out about the 1893
I've read a lot of back and forth arguments regarding the safety and strength of the small ring Mauser actions. I understand that a lot of this pertains to rifles converted to higher pressure NATO ammunition. Were there any concerns about testing this example?
Edit: I should have saved my question for after watching the entirety of the video before asking this.
I love that catch phrase. :D
Concerning your comments on the magazine cutoff. I suspect this was connected to the US rifle trials of 1892 as at least one of the US prototypes had a magazine cutoff and used the rimless 7.65 cartridge.
I really like this old ottoman music.
I own one of these rifles. a reproduction magazine cutoff was added to the rifle. Overtime the repro cutoff lever began to not work and once it received the gun the repro lever was barely pushing down the follower. Is there anyway to get an original magazine cutoff lever? Or is it too rare to find one?
The Turks stopped using the cutoff in the 1893/05 upgrade So there really isn't very many originals out there. The straight 1893's that were not upgraded that are out there were probably captured examples.
I thought the catch phrase was "War were declared!"
Hmm.... I never realized it. A lever action is easier to check the loading area and bullet as you cycle. You don't have the bolt blocking the eye sight to inspect it.
BEST CATCHPHRASE EVER!
My addiction is satisfied for another fortnight.
At 11:50 the drawing shows what looks like a 10 round capacity?
What was the first ever double stack box magazine? I can't really think of any that came before this rifle.
I think it was the lee metford that was first
Cana regular gew98/K98 bayonet fit on a turkish 1893 mauser? Im about to buy a turkish 1893 and itd be cool if my gew 98 bayonet would fit. Even thought its not correct
8 days late, but nope they won’t fit, the Mauser 98 and 93 have different bayonet lugs.
@@churchowl3052 ah ur right i was j/w cuz i already have a gew98 bayonet. I just got an 1893 turkish mauser from old steel for 400$. its all matching and has a mint bore! I ended up finding one of the older style bayonets with the quillion (shortened blade tho) those older bayonets are cool
24:00: Othias proves a Mauser bolt is secretly a retractable ballpoint pen.
Question Were did Mauser NOT go over the World other than Australia, Love you Work.Thank you John for the gun
48:19 what gun is that in the upper left hand corner?
C&Mauser!
All Mauser All the time!
Model 1893 7.65mm, Model 1893/05 still 7.65mm loss of magazine cutoff switch, Model 1893/33 same as the 1905 upgrade but change to 8mm Mauser barrel and different rear sight.
I would like this guys making a Verdun gameplay
I agree, the rifle is a rare beauty. I suppose Mae is too.
Can you please do a video on the Argentine 1909 rifle in 7.65!
If you can procure one for him I'm sure he would
I saw a couple of mausers in 7 mm in a gunshop. I didn't see the markings so I don't know how made it but it was a bit of a bent bolt and cock on close with dates with like 1923 with one and a sporterized(but at least a decent job) one with a checkered stock and rebluing that was dated at 1892. The sights looked like \|/. Also they seem to lock on the follower if you don't press it don't not sure if that is typical or a special feature. They were 200 and 260 dollars receptively but I'm broke also not even sure they could handle modern loadings.
The autist in me(cause I am) wants to know what those are but my google-fu is weak.
Stay determined!
Technicly...
I want all Mausers you will include.....please.
I cant wait for the swedish mauser video
Isn't "War were declared" a good enough catch phrase. Awesome video as usual btw.
AH, got my Mae fix!!!!
How long has Mae had that ring?
She married the Reichsrevolver.
I hate how late these come out every day because i lose sleep over them 😂
Dat Mae expression after hearing catch phrase. :D
My grandfathers catchphrase throughout his time in the trenches was "Don't worry they can't hit anything at that dist.....
Two things:
At the time of WWI Istanbul was known as Constantinople.
Is Mae wearing a wedding ring?
Not really, Istanbul was Istanbul after the occupation in 1453. At least that's how it was known nationwide in Ottoman Empire anyway.
Nice, just nice. One more thing to look forward too. The other one being beer. Turkish today :)
So which was the trigger Mae found most unpleasant ? She is going to be one of the very few people, period, much less with contemporary people,to have experience with this many different rifles. Julian Hatcher and Elmer Keith are long gone. Who else would have this experience ?
There is one for sale at local gun store. I should buy it to re enact All Quiet on the Western Front 70's version. ( Joking)
Do a mae top ten rifle, a top ten pistol, and a top ten revolver episode. Obviously separate videos.
Do one for Othias as well.
Minimum 2 hrs each
35:06 ...effective use!
the magazine cut off might have been for the us, Mauser did take the 1892 to the trials there
I just picked one up for 150.00$ it’s fun as hell to shoot the Turkish date on the side is 1313.
Can't wait for project lightening.
neat
I have some of that fn 7x57 173 grain nickel plated round nose Venezuelan surplus manufactured 1936
Sleep is for the uncommitted.
More like decaffeinated.
Is that a wedding/engagement ring Mae's finger? If so, congrats!!!!
25:56 i kinda like the music
Is there a Way where declared. t-shirt?
I’m thoroughly enjoying this series, but every time the Ottoman Empire is mentioned the only campaign ever talked about is Gallipoli, could be because it was one of the few successes they had, the Ottomans fought all over that part of the Middle East, were there no other after action reports or comments made, either by the Ottomans or by the British/Commonwealth troops involved?
kahraman dedelerimizin ruhuna fatiha
The mag cutoff was ordered at the behest of the German delegation, most notably Liman Von Sanders, who thought the Ottomans could do with accuracy.
Is Mae getting/or is married? What's up with the ring? Great show as always. Keep up the awesome work.
Aren't those two a married couple?
Was wondering the same thing....
Mae get married over Christmas?????
Jeez, can't people just wear wedding bands without people insinuating they're married!?
@@peterlynch1458 Oof...please tell me you're kidding. I don't think they are from the south...
@@fuzzydunlop7928 Ahhh...nope. Thats bit like wearing an army uniform and then yelling "why does everyone keep asking me where I served!?"
So, if the Gewehr 98's only real flaws are the length and the rear sights, does that mean that the Karabiner 98AZ is top dog thus far?
