    This is a crude circuit that has the external transistors incorrectly connected. It is nothing more than a simple emitter follower that is outside of the control loop so the voltage regulation will be poor. There is not current limiting that is in any way predictable. The proper configuration is easily found in data sheets or applications notes for the LM317.
    edit: Forgot to mention - the proper circuit requires a PNP transistor

      Yo hice un circuito de esos pero la realidad no conectar aparatos de alto amperaje probé conectar un taladro de 12 voltios DC y se destruyeron los transistores y regulador 😢😢

    I've seen several people do this basic circuit but NO one is showing an amp meter or using a thermometer to check the heatsink to see how heat is being transfered to that piece. It is really important to know this to see how effecient the regulator is actually. These are nothing really more than a linear regulator and therefore cannot be all the efficient as there has to be lost power in heat. A switching system would be much more useful, For sure if all you want is a linear system then these are fine and simple.

    Primeramente mis felicitaciones por su prollecto muy entendido y facil de hacer exitos en sus demas proyecto que dios le siga dando mas sabiduria e inteleigencia. Bueno amigo mi pregunta es la sigue te ! Si toca las 2 puntas de la salida se quemaria el circuito o alguno de los transistores ? Ya que no le veo un sistema de protecion contra cortocircuito es lo unico que le aria falta a este proyecto espero su respuesta gracias buen dia exitos en sus proyectos...

    Hello. When charging, my battery shows 13-16-18 volts. Can I stabilize it with such a regulator so that the output from the battery is stable at 12.5 volts while it is charging and the voltage on it jumps from 13 to 18 volts?

    Hi sir,,, can this be used to inject voltage on a shorted motherboard,,,
    This circuit will not blow or shut down then come back on after I release it from the shoerted board.
    To make my question short and clear,, I am asking if this circuit will withstand short circuit on the load.

      Yes it should be related. But it is connected by the heat sink. From the body of the transistor.

      They are important. Without them, bipolar transistors will not share current equally and there is a tendency for thermal runaway. If one transistor starts carrying more current than the other it will run hotter. That results in a reduction of the base-emitter voltage, meaning it will take even more of the current and runner hotter still. The emitter "ballast" resistors do increase losses in the circuit, but they are essential.

    Lm 317 can handle maximum 1.5amp ,so the output current will be around 1amp only,need othe transistor to boost ampere's also.As per my opinion.

    O problema destes circuitos caseiros ,e disto ninguem fala va-se la saber porque,e a sua queda de tensao,quando se aplica uma carga...uma lampada ou motor na saida de ajuste,ou seja por exemplo uma lampada de 12 volts 21 watts quando ligada na saida de ajuste a 12 volts reais,nao tem o brilho que deveria ter ao ser ligada a 12 volts reais,e se na maioria dos videos de facto mostra a lampada la ligada com os 12 volts e o brilho normal,e porque a voltagem la injectada de momento nao sao os 12 volts reais mas sim uma voltagem superior talvez 15v 20 v ou mais para ela dar o brilho normal,e para provar isso e muito facil em antes de por a carga lampada e regular a saida ajustavel para os 12 volts sem carga e so depois ligar a lampada,entao ai pode-se verificar a queda de tensao de 12 volts reais para 7 volts 6 ou 5 volts,porque de facto nao pode ter uma quebra tao acentuada,no aceitavel talvez 0,5 volts,dai a grande lacunas destes circuitos caseiros,nao quero dizer mal destes projectos e bem haja quem os faz e ate sao interessantes,mas na realidade tem este senao.

    It is misleading to read what is written on the transistor and put it in the title thinking it will be in the whole circuit. Pass 12 volts, 10 amps through this circuit for 1 hour. The circuit will burn. It will burn like crazy. It only works in small jobs. Efficiency is fifty percent.

    Even for you, this is a low point. You never connected the collector of the second transistor.
    Voltage is adjustable, but not current.
    And why not use a bunch of car headlights in parallel as a load, rather than a puny little flashlight bulb? Give us all a thrill and let us see actual high power.

      @@homemade_101 Sigh. Maybe it does and maybe it doesn't. The hole on a TO247 case is insulated. There is nothing in your setup to guarantee that both tabs will punch through the oxide layer on the aluminum heat sink, or that a low-resistance connection will be formed if it does. You could get away with this if you used TO220 packages as you have in other videos, but this one is just bad.
      Also, while I have your attention, the thumbnail says 50 amps, and that is just complete and utter hogwash. You don''t have the base drive to do it, and the heatsink is completely inadequate. Like I say, I dare you to show a video of this setup driving 500 watts of 12-volt car headlamps. I double dare you.
