Sophocles's classic play Oedipus Rex epitomizes the themes of Greek tragedy: prophecy and the inevitability of fate.
King Oedipus of Thebes must confront the fact that his reign may be the cause of a plague ravaging his city. His origins, his kingship and his relationship to his wife are all revealed as the manifestation of a dire prediction.
These realizations serve as material for some of the most iconic scenes in theatrical history. Bloody and rich in symbolic meaning, they illustrate the Greek obsession with destiny as few other plays do.
In this typical Greek tragedy, a chorus introduces and comments on the story in Oedipus Rex and converses with the characters.
Ancient Greek playwright Sophocles’s Oedipus Rex was performed circa 30-426 BCE in Ancient Greece. He was by far the most successful of the major tragic playwrights in ancient Greece, though only 7 of his 123 plays survive today.
The play Oedipus Rex contains many powerful themes, such as fate, blindness, and self-discovery. Other powerful motifs include oracles and crossroads.

another symbol left unmentioned was that oedipus gouged out his eyes with his jocasta's (his mother's) brooches. the brooches held up jocastas gown, taking them off would reveal her naked body. Oedipus, who had slept with his mother, uses the same instruments used to unveil his mother's body to him, to incite his own blindness, his own punishment

If I'm not mistaken, the romans had this ideology which suggested that the ones who die can see each other in the after life, even if they were the shadows of what they once were when they were alive. So Oedipus blinded himself so that he would not have to see his mother in the afterlife.

The Sphinx terrorized the people of Thebes for years. She gave the people of Thebes riddles and whoever couldn’t solve it she would devour (eat) them. Oedipus saved the people of Thebes from the Sphinx by solving her riddle, and because she was outsmarted by oedipus she killed herself and therefore oedipus is known as a hero to the people of Thebes. Because their king had recently passed, (killed unknowingly by oedipus), they ask Oedipus to become their new king and marry the queen of Thebes, Jocasta (later we find out, she is also Oedipus mother). So if the Sphinx never existed, oedipus would never have gotten rid of her and become a hero, motivated by the people of Thebes to become their new king.
