- Wiera Gran (1916-2007) was born on April 20th. Adolf Hitler was also born on April 20th. This coincidence had a particularly dramatic dimension for the artist during the war and during her stay in the Warsaw ghetto. She describes it in her book "Sztafeta oszczerców” (A relay of slanderers) - the relevant fragment has been copied and is located at the end of the video.
In the video - a film recording donated to Jerzy Płaczkiewicz by Wiera Gran, Paris, November 2003. The entire tape.
In December 2018, the original copy was handed over by him to the National Library, Warsaw.
MARIA DOLORES (Garcia - Ref-Ren) - Wiera (Vera) GRAN - Paris, ca 1959.
According to Polish lyrics written by Ref-Ren Konarski, this is the story of proud Maria Dolores from Barcelona, whose strong ego was broken by the fact of abandonment by a young lover:
"... Ole, Ole! He was young and he had black eyes!
And he kept swearing that he loved me,
That for me, that he would always jump into the fire ...!
Ole, Ole! The street is now dark and empty,
The lanterns are out, the stars are gone,
There’s no moon overhead already ....
Ole, Ole ! The echo of the last words is dying somewhere:
Adios, you are my only one, you are my dream, Maria Dolores !...”

Oh boy!! What a voice - what an actress!! Miss Gran held me transfixed to the end, bringing tears to my eyes too; this is a fitting tribute to the legend Herself. You did a wonderful thing by donating the original film to the National Archive, a most magnanimous gesture on your part. Thank you, as always.

Lepiej chyba przeczytać i posłuchać co ma do powiedzenia sama Gran. Napisała książkę a dodatkowo jest jej kilkugodzinne nagranie-świadectwo z Nowego Jorku z 29 października 1995r dla USC Shoah Foundation. Co do Tuszyńskiej to podaje ona zarówno inną datę urodzin artystki niż sama Gran oraz myli datę nagrania dla USC Shoah Foundation

I love Wiera Gran since long and always searched so hard for any opportunity to SEE her sing, but couldn´t find anything except the scenes in "On a heym" - which are great indeed, but, nevertheless, they are quite artificial. Now I finally see this and it is just breathtaking, she was even better than I ever dared to imagine. She is a wonder.

That is a whole life story combined tightly with art - and a personal moment of trust of the artist and a gift once given to me. I thought after some years that it should be given to everybody. The process which was not easy: to transfer the contents from the ancient tape to the digital format by a specialised laboratory (and to pay for it....!). I am happy with the result, as I see by the reaction of my kind visitors - thank you, Julian !
