  • Kontiki fishing isn't everyone's cup of tea. It is my last type of fishing I like to do and really I only do it these days to show others about Kontiki fishing. It's a great way to spend the day at the beach fishing with your family and kids, perfect with a few mates and it's great for the older generation nown that everything is basically electric. I've even talked to a few fisho's that had to give up there surfcasting due to injuries but now are able to head out with a couple mates and still have a fun day fishing with a tiki.
I actually grew up as a kid fishing the kontiki with my dad and his friends. Back in the mid to late 70's we would drive up Muriwai beach in our old 1960's Austin cambridge where we would set our 25ft long kontiki bag. back then we did work a little harder fishing the tiki. We would need at least 3 of us. We would tie one end of our bag then stand up wind with the other end open facing into the wind were it would inflate. We would quickly tie it off then clip it to our old winch that stood on a beach spike similar to todays surfcasting beach spikes.
We always had to wait for those strong E-NE winds so it would blow our kontiki bag out to at least a K offshore. Winding it back in an hour later was where we really worked for our fish. Back then we didn't have a hook limit so we use to run up to 40hooks. We were allowed more fish also so when the tiki was full of fish we would have to wrap the 200lb line a couple times around our body and up over our shoulder once we walked 50mtrs down the beach, we would walk back to the winch were it was manually wound back on to the tiki winch. Having 3 people, one would wind while the other 2 rotated wrapping and walking back to the winch.
These are fond memories that will stay with me forever and you to can have them with your family and friends.

Hello from Sunny South Africa. Thanks for another epic vid. I have a question for the contiki fishermen. Fish like reef, aren't you worried about your hooks getting stuck on reef... or do you fish sandy bottom only?

Cheers mc7203 and hello from NZ...
Yep these are used off beaches or sometimes rocks that have sand out in front of them. They do snag occasionally when trying somewhere new that may have low lying reef or even wrecks.
Most of our beaches are reef free (especially the west coast) but you do have to really know your spots. The main line is 180/200lb with traces only being 50-80lb so most times these get stuck and break.
Have had a couple of break offs due to sharks only no snags.

A lot of it will be like lumo beads and lumo tubing - I find pink to be a great attractant but also anything that glows.
