    WCW / nWo Halloween Havoc 98 took place in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 25th 1998. The show has become infamous thanks to the semi main event; Hollywood Hogan vs The Warrior. Hogan vs Warrior took place back at WWF WrestleMania VI and at Halloween Havoc the two squared off again in a rematch. The match, however, turned out to be one of the worst matches that World Championship Wrestling ever put on PPV and Warrior would leave the company shortly after.
    Elsewhere on the card The Outsiders wrestle eachother when Scott Hall (representing nWo Hollywood) takes on Kevin Nash (representing nWo Wolfpac). Bret "Hitman" Hart takes on Sting in a dream match, and Rick Steiner tries to finally get his hands on his brother Scott Steiner.
    The main event, DDP vs Goldberg, was widely viewed as the best match of the night. The problem, however, was the fact that up to 20% of homes didn't see this main event due to the PPV running too long.

      In a way, you could see what they wanted to do: create a more serious storyline built around a real life situation, and the WWE has been able to do more serious, blurring the line storylines nowadays well and with enough care given to them (sometimes you have to do some risqué things to illicit emotional responses). They made a similar like story work with the Jericho vs. CM Punk feud in 2012, which brought up the reasons CM Punk was "straight edge" (also because the two performers have always been able to pull those types of stories off well). Thing is, it felt like more exploitation than anything else with those two storylines due to them not knowing how to pull storylines like that off. If those stories happened with today's WWE, I bet they would've taken better care to it. Might have still been cringe to watch, but at least not as exploitive.

    Halloween Havoc 98 is a perfect example of dream matches on paper not turning out great in reality. If you looked at this card without having seen the PPV it's absolutely stacked! DDP v Goldberg, Hogan v Warrior, Nash v Hall, Steiner v Steiner, Sting v Bret. I think this is the point where fans started really losing faith in WCW with the messed up PPV ending and then showing the match on free tv the next night

  • @jbanks979
    @jbanks979 Před rokem +33

    Part of the reason the NWO storyline was almost insulting at this point is that every single NWO adjacent storyline is “this member is going to turn face we promise 1000% this time PSYCH! WHAT A SWERVE”
    They already did the Buff fake face turn at least three times this year.
    Warrior v. Hogan is what happen when pat Patterson is not pre scripting every move

    • @martynodonnell
      @martynodonnell Před rokem +5

      NWO storyline should have ended shortly after Starrcade 97. Sting should have dethroned Hogan clean, leading to the split of the NWO shortly after. Issue was WCW had very little new ideas and the creative clause people such as Hogan had meant the older stars wouldn’t get out the way, so that new stars could be born.
      The Hogan VS Warrior match was all about Hogans ego and getting his win back, from 8 years prior. WCW heavily dropped the ball with Warrior, who let’s face it outside of the 80s and the early 90s, was very out of place in wrestling. By the time the Halloween Havoc match came around very few of the fans actually cared about the match.

    • @mangrove
      @mangrove Před rokem +9

      They were overdoing it with swerves well before Russo arrived. Thing is, a Buff face turn could have done well, especially after his neck injury. Easy storyline to write, and they pissed it away.

      If he won, Nitro might've held onto the ratings war and went back and forth a bit more going into 1999 a little longer. Goldberg was better at chasing the title, but holding it was boring.

    • @rockajabroni5975
      @rockajabroni5975 Před rokem +19

      They could've implented that spear on the ringpost as a way to stir controversy, claiming Goldberg concussed himself. Then Nash wins WW3 as planned, loses to DDP at Starrcade where Goldberg wins a nr1 contender's match. Laying the groundwork for a rematch further down the line.

    Why was WCW so afraid of turning Buff Bagwell face? They had two good opportunities to do it and decided not to. I think having a face Buff would have been good during this time and you could have had him team up with Rick legitimately. instead, its just the same story over and over again and you can see why people got tired of it. I think that was a lot of what was causing problems for WCW during this time. Too much wanting to keep the status quo.
    EDIT: I forgot this was the PPV where it got cut out before the main event. And people had to be livid, because this was not only match of the night, but probably Goldberg's best match in his WCW run. And while his stock was already rising, I think this match helped elevate DDP even more.

    Interestingly enough, WCW would go on to win the following Nitro in the ratings. After a series of losses no less. However, it would also be their very last win of The War. Bitter sweet victory for WCW, likely that bump in the numbers were the PPV viewers just tuning in to find out what the hell happened the night before. This is a pivotal point in the decline of WCW.

      It's the very definition of a hollow victory. They wont that night's ratings war, but mainly cause many people wanted to tune in just to see what happened between DDP and Goldberg due to their own incompetence that cost them a lot more money.

      @BrianRobinson-pg7sh The vast majority of men aren't interested in seeing other men in a sexual way. T*s are offensive to straight men because it's viewed as if they're trying to trick or deceive dudes into seeing them as women. It's dishonesty; but it's stupid because it's pretty obvious to spot a man that's dressed as a woman. Not only are we expected to accept their "lived truth" they also try to force normal people into changing the way we speak around them. I'm not on board with any of it & I'm not going to be kind to these liars. I don't know what Steiner said, but he's an old school badass. They don't get much more masculine than the Steiners. So I would imagine he wasn't kind. More power to him.

    Let's face it. There was no way that Hulk and Warrior were going to repeat or succeed their epic encounter at Wrestlemania VI. That match stunk worse than unwashed gym socks. As for the main event, maybe if they dropped some unneeded segments such as the Nitro Girls, then maybe those who purchased the show would've seen the entire main event. Even though they played it on Nitro the next night, many viewers felt robbed.

      Yeah and it's surprising that nobody in WCW realised this thing. Hogan carried warrior at mania 6 and 1998 Hogan was simply too beaten up to carry ultimate Warrior in a match. That's the reason why Hogan took all the responsibility for this match

    I have so much nostalgia for the DDP Goldberg match. I had just barely gotten into wrestling and this was probably the second or third PPV I’d ever seen and I just remember being so enthralled and I loved both of them and couldn’t decide who should win. I didn’t want the streak to end but if DDP had broken it I wouldn’t have still been happy.

    This was the second wrestling PPV I ever watched as a kid and it felt like a spectacle to me. Every match seemed huge and important, the set was awesome and they hyped the PPV for WEEKS much more than normal. While I was looking forward to Hogan vs Warrior, it was the DDP vs Goldberg match that solidified me as a wrestling fan and the one I was most excited for. I have pictures of back then and I am always doing the diamond cutter in them, he made me such a fan of his even though he lost. The match still holds up today and is probably the best WCW match ever, and was between two homegrown WCW stars, which were rare lol.

    At least there's the DDP/Goldberg match. DDP should've won. Not sure if it's mentioned here but DDP (obviously) thinks giving him the win would've been the right move, and I agree. Should've built him up as the huge underdog and gave him the win like Tyson losing to Douglas. Would've been a cool story.

    This was my first WCW PPV I attended live. It's a shame that thebfeed cut off for most, because I easily consider this Goldberg's best match. Sure, they replayed it on nitro the next night but there was no suspense to it by then. Playing Monday morning quarterback, I would have saved DDP versus Goldberg for Starrcade, and put Page over clean. He deserved it, and would've continued to be massively over with the fans. Oh well..

    I've never found a source to back this up, but I heard from the rumor mill that the original plan waa for DDP to beat Goldberg. The week of the PPV was when TV Guide had a series release with different WCW guys on the covers and Goldberg's had him with the belt. Apparently either Bischoff or Kevin Sullivan said if people then tuned into Nitro and Goldberg wasn't champ it would confuse them.
