    I trimmed my coleus today. It was soooo hard! Some of my leaves were as big as my hand. And this is my indoor coleus. I am trusting what you said Jim because you are the expert and your coleus are beautiful.

      No worries Cynthia....This early pruning maintenance will pay off!! It is difficult clipping the leaves particularly the big kongs ....but its necessary. After a bit of time when the Coleus is nice and full I'll just trim the tops and and worn damaged leaves which isn't as tough to do.

    I have 151 coleus plants in my front/side yard with 92 different varieties. Some of the planters can't be seen because my coleus are so big and bushy! I also have some that just keep wanting to flower. These plants I got early spring when stores started putting them out. The plants were very root bound. My opinion is that the plants were hold over from the growers during the pandemic last year, so the plants were already a year old when I got them. What sucks is that they didn't/aren't really get very tall because I have to keep pinching them and fighting them to live through the summer.
    Also little green worms eating giant holes in my leaves. The funny thing is, the worms have a preference on leaves. They ate my henna coleus leaves but never touch indian summer coleus in the same pot! Crazy! Anyway, your plants are stunning as usual. Wish there was a way to post pics so I could share pictures with you of my coleus plants. The rings around my trees are absolutely gorgeous! Have a happy coleus day! And thanks for all the great info you put out!

    I brought mine in during the winter & snipped off the flower ends. The plant got up so huge that I was able to bring it back out side in spring. I will definitely snip it off to encourage inner growth, although it was amazing to see that the leaves got larger than my hand! Thanks for the video.

      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Linda... Yes Overwintered Coleus will do well in a bright window...and regular maintenance trimming including especially seed stalks will get you into Spring. One thing you will have to do eventually is repot as a Coleus Root structure gets soooo massive it eventually takes over an depletes much of the soil as you will notice when popping it out into a newer bigger pot.

    At the age of 36, I got my first lil coleus. It's a purple one with a purple stem that just got its first green/pink leaves in the middle of the purple. I think its a mix of a couple different types, I don't know, it doesn't look like any of the coleus types but like a hybrid of the watermelon and the all-purple one. If that's even possible. Anyway, it's my baby. It lives on my dresser in my bedroom and only wants to grow tall but not set many leaves. So today I drew out the scissors for the first time and cut the top leaves off in the hope that it becomes bushier. It's not meant to grow here in Northern Scandinavia, within the Arctic circle but I mean, it's inside, in the warm, far away from wind and cold. I hope it survives being "cut off" in the top and sets a few more bushy leaves. This video made me become brave enough to try ...

It's not really good to let them go to seed but I do let a few of my mine so I can get the seeds. Then the next year I have amazing colors because of the bee pollination of the different flowers. Hi Jim,
    Thank you for all nice videos you are sharing.
    I want to ask:
    1-why you trim the seeds?
    I did trim my seeds from last 2 months but I did not get new anymore????
    2-if I cut a giant monster stem with some leaves from the top for germinating? will I get new leaves?
    Thanks from your big fan From Yemen

      Hello Follow your Dreams!! When a Coleus plant starts to develop seed stalks its actually telling itself that it's time to renew and triggers the end of its lifecycle....it will begin to decline because much energy is diverted to seed development rather than Plant leaves, color etc.
      I absolutely like to collect Coleus seeds..... but during my Coleus growing season I trim or pinch off early seed stalk development until about September...then I will let them develop as Eventually the Winter frost will kill it here. This I do to Coleus which I want seeds from. Hope this clarified your question

      Oh ABSOLUTELY!! When your Coleus grows branches & branches...You can snip off a branch...cut the leaves leaving two and root ot in water ..... in 4 -5 days roots will appear and you can pot it. Or you can place it straight in a pot with moist soil...but the soil must remain moist to promote the roots.

      Hi Anthony....I keep Rootings specifically to be planted in my larger Outdoor planters. So I wait until after the last Frost date which is generally late April Early May. Technically once Rooted...you can pot them indoors.....and keep them as indoor Coleus as We March towards Spring you can fertilize...but keep them warm, Well lit and watered

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  Před 4 lety

      Hi Sandra!! Yes potted Coleus can be brought inside during Winter. Most Not All will make it thru Spring...however they will "molt" or lose many leaves and also due to shorter days the leaf color will become less vibrant...and finally the overall growth of the Coleus will drastically slow...basically the Coleus will be in Hibernation.
      To increase the success of making it thru Winter....Additional Light and warmth can be created by using an LED Plant light

      Hi Marsha!! Thanks for your question. I hope you SUBSCRIBE as well and take a look thru my many Coleus videos!!
      Coleus can be potted or planted straight in the ground. Either or. I personally Pot most of mine but I do plant a bunch around a Maple Tree in front of my house.
      Just be sure that wherever you decide to put Coleus you (depending on your location) you dont plant them or place them outdoors too early...both Maturity wise and time of year. I'm in NJ....I dont place my Coleus outdoors until May when all danger of Frost and temperature are clearly above the 60's.
      Also familiarize yourself with "Hardening your Coleus " which is a way to gradually introduce Coleus to the stresses of being outdoors. Check my list of videos as I cover that.
      Lastly Coleus ARE PERENNIAL However they are not like traditional Perennials like say Black eye Susan or Montauk Daisy..... Coleus seed themselves but die off upon the first frost. In the Tropics they continue to reseed themselves which is why they consider them perennial. Ultimately in the Winter Zones....they are Annuals :(

    should I bring my plant in for the winter

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  Před rokem

      That all depends....Largely on where you live. If you're in a warm low zone climate and don't receive a Frost or snow then essentially your Coleus can thrive all year long with proper trimming and feeding.
      If you live say in NJ or a high zone which gets Frost... Winters of Snow and Cold sub 40° temps and IF YOU ENJOY KEEPING AND HAVE ROOM FOR INDOOR PLANTS....and have a Bright area which receives an abundance of not necessarily direct Sun...but Bright daylight...preferably a Southern exposing window or baywindow then Yes you can bring in or Overwinter your Coleus. I choose not to Overwinter Pots of any significant amount...but choose to keep seeds and I cut and root stems of certain varieties.

    All my colues planst suddenly went limp and died off, I was distraught, I've kept them in place over Winter (I am in the Southern Hemisphere) hoping they may spring back to life. The Sun isn't getting to them at all but thought they liked shade! Any advice? Thanks for the video.

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  Před 4 lety

      Hi Moon Fire Magic.... Sorry to hear your troubles. Coleus do like a bit of shade....but they ABSOLUTELY need Sunlight to grow and develop. Each Coleus Variety differs in the amount of Sun it benefits from. Some of the smaller delicate Coleus may burn too easily with even a small amount of direct Sun...while others like my larger leafed Kongs do very well...as long as they are watered and maintained in well drained soil.
      I suggest you increase it's Sun and warmth exposure. Ease off if you are watering too often...especially if it's in primary shaded location. See how the additional Sun affects it.....if it looks like your losing it and there are a few healthy branches try cutting and rooting to start a new plant.... The only downfall there is if the plant is inherently a poor plant then its offspring will probably continue in that direction. Ultimately however there are many environmental reasons that could have caused its downfall. Trick is experience and experimentation. Good luck. Please let me know how u make out.

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  Před 4 lety

      Yes...in a way . Most Coleus develop seed stalks.....Most. You can keep a Coleus trim throughout the growing season to maintain a nice full healthy plant.....towards the end of the growing season as it becomes hotter and more humid It will grow fuller and faster and you will notice seed stalks developing.
      If You don't want to collect the seeds then keep trimming the Tops.....nipping off the seed stalks as well.... If you want seed stalks...let a few develop and trim the rest of the Coleus as a single stalk will yield hundreds of seeds!!

      Hmmmmm.... if you can send me a picture to chewchjz@yahoo.com
      If they are still young germinations then they have along way to go. They may not be leggy as much as just young...they will be long , thin and lanky even fall over but as they mature they will strengthen & straighten up . But send me those pictures....Don't panic ! Lol

      What does "leggy" mean?

      @@taylarogers313 Hi Tayla.... A " Leggy" Coleus means it has long stems usually with minimal amount of leaves that tends to droop or fall over. Dont confuse a Wilted Coleus which is where the leaves droop down around the stem because of a lack of water.
      A Leggy Coleus will look "spidery" thin with little leaf growth. This is mostly caused by a lack of the amount of Sunlight....or too much Nitrogen ( Fertilizer) in the soil or both. Most times if you cut the Coleus down and increase the amount of time it gets SUN....Not necessarily direct Sun but " SUNLIGHT" . Moving it to a brighter place with less shade...it will develop better fuller leaf growth.
