  • Against Manchester City in the Champions League, Diego Simeone used a 5-5-0 for a large portion of the first half. Why did he do it ? How did it work ? Why was it so effective defensively ? Here is a tactical analysis of this 5-5-0.

the 5-5-0 worked well in this match imo. it never looked like man city were going to score. jus pure defending into huge attacking opportunities which unfortunately never came to be a goal but i think on another day atleti score 2 in tht match

People don't realise it now but Simeone has just introduced new blue-prints to the game of Football.
You say it's boring but Football is more than Goals or fun it's pure Tactical and this 5-5-0 will definitely be use by other coaches/Managers
E.g it's a Final the underdogs go 1:0 up and then for the remaining duration (10min, 30min 70min) they switch to 5-5-0 to completely shut out attacks (pure Defending/Ultra Defending)
    It's like throwing bodies forward
    The flip side to that
    Is Holding bodies back
He may not have too much silverware but Simeone is like the Busquets of Football

no, Spurs against city play a drop back 3 4 2 1, when without possesion a 5-4-1, they never play 5-5-0, the reason atletico failed is because griezman is slow and Felix is not fast enough to beat the likes of walker and cancelo, Spurs have Much Faster players in kulisevski and son to make runs in behind once possesion is regained, and since kane is not the fastest, he is usually the Player to long the ball in for son and kulisevski, and also unlike atletico's 5-4-1, Contes 5 4 1 presses when the oppurtunity more, but make sure not to commit to much people. It’s a playoff game. This matches are played smartly. Knowing that you’re closing the leg at home, this game was meant not to try to lose, but if losing, lose by the minimal. Knowing that you’re playing for the champions league spot in the league, since they’ll never win it, course. Makes this, to me, a cautious, yet clever game by someone. What simone did is crazy but a good tactical move but he lost the match, while what xavi did is that the striker will be at front and others on the defensive line, this paid off,as during the counter attack the striker and wingers will make the run which attract the defenders and cdms which will enable the cms to be not noticed or not marked which means that they are free and are a much better position to strike. This why Barcelona beat real madrid.

Some people think this is boring and terrorism but they are the same that then if you lose playing "nice" football, wish you get sacked. As manager I love the low/mid block good defense (high press too) but I would never criticize other systems and less because of results, as it has been shown that ANY style is invincible

Even if there is a 5-5-0, i also didnt imagine any team would use it in a real match.. more over at ucl quarter final

There is a reason no team uses it ...attack is the best form of defence ....unless you have both Messi and Ronaldo in your front you cannot expect 2 players to dribble past 4-6 players and score goal after getting possession from parking bus

Reinildo left his marking on De Bruyne and went in to challenge Foden which left just the needed space for De Bruyne to run in to exploit and finished with a clinical shot. But Guardiola should not make this 5-5-0 such a big deal because he has already faced the same Simeone Atletico with his Barca and Bayern before which both Simeone won.

It would be entirely against Barca's principles.
If Barca played only to not let their opponents win by hook or crook, would legends like Xavi, Iniesta and Messi have prospered?
Simeone and Mourinho may play like this, but Pep and Jurgen never would..
Pep and Jurgen care more about the game and the fans, not about the win.
